For printing infill, what would you guys say should be the maximum diameter? I'm guessing that having a bigger diameter hole means I can extrude plastic faster. I also realise that there are other things limiting how fast I can extrude such as how quickly I can melt the plastic.by MotoBarsteward - General
I have a 0.4mm J Head that I want to use in a two extruder machine for just doing infill. Can I drill it out to 0.5mm or even more? This could have quite an impact on print times.by MotoBarsteward - General
I bought a really good oven (NEFF) last year. Imagine my delight when I found that I could set the thermostat at 45 Deg C and find that it holds this to within 1 degree! A couple of hours in the the oven rejuvenates my PLA. Don't go much above 55 Degrees as it starts to stick together.by MotoBarsteward - General
I'm in the process of building such a machine. I was going to use the second head for PVA support material but I can't get anyone to sell some to me at a reasonable price. So, in the mean time, I was going to put a 0.5mm J head on the second extruder and use it for infill. If i put a 0.35mm into the first head and using the multi extruder features of slic3r I think I can take a big chunk out of mby MotoBarsteward - General
It's not obvious at first but read this I.e. You create multiple Filament profiles and specify which extruder uses which profile on the Plater page.by MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
The latest versions of slic3r do support what you ask for.by MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
Im sorry to say this behaviour is normally observed when upgrading slic3r. You need to try deleting all your print, filament and printer settings .ini files. They are not always portable between different versions of slic3r.by MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
Although I have no experience of Ubuntu and slic3r, this looks to be a problem with your config files. When upgrading slic3r, you tend to need to delete the .ini files as they don't appear to be transferable form one version to the next.by MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
Internally, the sprung part at the bottom of the tear shaped section is sloped, getting narrower as you insert the rod. As this is built up in layers, this slope is a succession of small steps. Part of the noise that you will hear is those steps getting scraped by the end of your rod. Have you filed a good chamfer into the ends of your rod. It needs to be rounded or chamfered to at least 1mm to eby MotoBarsteward - General Mendel Topics
Although much better in 0.9.8, slic3r support material generation still has problems. It frequently causes my slic3r to run out of memory. Kisslicer produces much better support imho and separates from the main object more easily.by MotoBarsteward - Slic3r

I tried with Linux. Slic3r ran ok but I got fed up with having to jump through hoops to get anything else to work. I'd agree with your comment about XP memory management not being.perfect but OSX is unix based and I still have to back off layer height and fill occasionally to get slic3r to run with out crashing. The problem is that code running inside virtual machines like Jave and Python does noby MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
Not much untill these android devices start appearing with several gig (8 would be nice!) of ram. As for slicing, a quad core, hyper-threading i7 would also be usefull. Don't underestimate the horse power required for slicing and don't over estimate the power of these Arm cores. Running my printer, i have a Pentium quad core machine, 2 GHz i think, with 2 gig of ram running XP and it very oftenby MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
This is symptomatic of not deleting the config files between updates. Try deleting your printer, filament and print ini files. I don't remember exactly where they are but searching this forum will help.by MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
Aaaaarrrrggghhh! And the award for most meaningless error message goes to..... ... Apple for the error message given when a app is run that is not signed by Apple or one of their developers! File is damaged You need to change your security and privacy settings to allow Apps downloaded from anywhere to run.by MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
I download the 0.9.8 .dmg file. Double click it and drag the slicer icon to my applications. When I open the applications and click the Slic3r app, it fails to open. The message reported is "Slic3r is damaged and can't be opened. You should remove it to the trash". I've tried downloading and installing a couple of times with no success. Anyone else had this problem? EDIT: OK. Just tried to re-iby MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
I have run Pronterface on the raspi but, due to lack of ram, it runs out of memory on anything but the simplest of objects. Same goes for slic3r. Nice idea but not worth the effort really.by MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
Anyone else noticed it or is it just me. Trying to download 0.9.8 but noting is coming.by MotoBarsteward - Slic3r

I'll bet you'll get as many different solution as people who post in reply. I no longer have peeling problems. I extrude my first layer of PLA 10 degrees hotter than subsequent layers. I use a solution of 50 percent PVA glue on a bed heated to 45 degrees. When the print finishes, let the bed cool to ambient and your printed item will come off easily. Don't have the bed too hot or you'll never getby MotoBarsteward - Printing
What I did is start at a high temperature and reduce it in steps of 5 degrees untill the extruder couldn't extrude any more. I then added 10 degrees to this and this is what I use. I normal extrude the first layer 10 degrees higher again. What slicing software do you use? Can you configure some retraction.by MotoBarsteward - Printing
Can you upload an stl? These extruders normally have a diaphragm that you drill out after to support the over hang. If this is missing then you will get what you see as bridging needs continuous threads to work properly. Saying that, I have got away with it in the past.by MotoBarsteward - Printing
Kisslicer seems to produce much better support material. It's also a lot quicker than slic3r. Give it ago.by MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
Any slicing issues that I have are normally fixed by running the stl through cloud.netfabb.comby MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
Get your reprap extruder up to temperature. I use Pronterface for controlling mine. Using a ruler or veniers, mark the filament 70mm up from wher it enters the extruder. Get Pronterface to tell your repeat to extrude 50mm. Check, using the measuring device of your choose that the mark has moved exactly 50mm into the extruder. If not, follow Having checked that there is no slippage in the extruby MotoBarsteward - Printing
Looking at the print, iether your extruder was extruding too much plastic and/or your z height is not set up correctly. The lumps of p ASIC that you can see on the service of your print should not be there. I think your J head has caught on them. Normally, this causes the axis to slip or it knocks the item being printed off of the print bed. I think your j head may have been week. If had lots ofby MotoBarsteward - Printing

It's not slic3rs fault. In the old days, XP, programs could write to the My Program's folder and it was easy to find settings. Then nasty people realised that one program's could then modify the code and settings for other program's. So now, settings are stored where you found them and one program can no longer modify the settings of another unless the program is running as admin. I'd create a shby MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
If you're scared by skeinforge (it scares the willies out of me), take a look at slic3r (open source) or kisslicer (not open source but free). They both produce excellent results but are easier to set up than skeinforge. Karleburg's comment is very valid.by MotoBarsteward - General Mendel Topics
Is your extruder calibrated? It's hard to tell from this photo. Do you get a build up of plastic on each layer on which the print head catches? If it is catching, you will hear and see this happening during a print. Have you check the obvious like belt tension and that the head moves freely in the x and y direction. Less obvious is the setting of the current adjustment on the stepper drivers.by MotoBarsteward - Printing
