@David, I think the requirement for Java 6 is specifically to do with the GUI and the libraries needed to display it. I noticed that I needed Java 6 installed (on my Linux laptop) around 6 months ago.by reece.arnott - RepRap Host
Thats looks fine. The problem then is probably the known issue with the Sun Java versions. i.e. For the latest host software versions you need Java 6 which is not available for Mac OS X 10.4. Sorry.by reece.arnott - RepRap Host
The LiveDVD is now quite out of date. I had hoped to have a new version by now but I'm procrastinating more than I thought I would. The 0.6 version of the DVD will work (the 0.7 version is not so good though) but the GUI of the host software has changed significantly since then (including moving to the later version of Java which is not supported by Mac OS X 10.4). I don't understand why Mac OSby reece.arnott - RepRap Host
I got a lasercut Z belt tensioner from Bits From Bytes and have just put together the Z belt around it. My question is stupidly simple: how do I adjust it in-situ? It is currently set up to be tight but not tight enough I know this is a stupid question but I've already broken part of the lasercut part just putting it together so I'd rather have some instructions as I have realised that I substiby reece.arnott - Mechanics
Have you got the swing-layout.jar in the classpath? Or multiple versions of it?by reece.arnott - RepRap Host
Well, that was a weird read. His basis for calling Reprap imaginary from a single read seems to be because it can't self-assemble; it's actually explicitly 'scoped out' in the parts he quotes from and also draws his conclusion from which makes it all the more puzzling. I think the majority of us would be quite happy if we could have the Reprap self assemble but that is at best a possible futureby reece.arnott - General
And once again, a couple of minutes thinking and tinkering could have saved me the hassle of writing a big long post. The problem was that I was using the java-6-openjdk, not the java-6-sun version of java! A couple of commands later, and its all fine. sudo update-java-alternatives --set java-6-sun sudo update-alternatives --config javaby reece.arnott - RepRap Host
Running on my Ubuntu laptop at 1280 x 800 I get many examples of the following when I run the latest host software from the sourceforge zip file: Note the buttons below the axis positions are only partially visible. It looks like the window layout is designed for a different window size but as there is no difference if I maximise the window (and others haven't complained) I doubt that is the cby reece.arnott - RepRap Host
The 1.4 is the current version. You can see instructions on how to put it together and closeup pictures at It's very handy when you're doing things with a whole bunch of wires as you just screw them down and if you need to move them, just unscrew and rewire. I understand that putting wires directly into the Ardunio board is assumed to be a more permanent thing. A quick changelog compiled fromby reece.arnott - General
His issue seems to have been resolved as he posted a new thread here:by reece.arnott - RepRap Host
Yes, its a bit of a hack-around at the moment so in the short term I would think it should only be hosted by Reprap but in the longer term I would like to see it go into the Debian and Ubuntu repositories. For that to happen there needs to be more work done but mostly it won't be directly on the reprap-host package. A couple of new .deb packages need to be created for the java3D stuff (there areby reece.arnott - RepRap Host
I have changed the host-package-release script in SVN as well as tweaked the debian folder for the reprap host software so the script will now create a .deb file as well as the zip file previously released. I attempted to attach the .deb package it created but its larger than the forum file attachment limit, so could someone with access to the Host software portion of the sourceforge site pleaseby reece.arnott - RepRap Host
OK, I think I've found the answer to my second question anyway. The sync is optional if the master/slave is set to master. I'll do that and take out the wires entirely.by reece.arnott - Controllers
I have 2 Stepper Motor Driver v1.1 boards (x and y) and 1 Stepper Motor Driver v1.2 board (z axis) connecting to an Ardunio breakout board. I have two minor wiring issues: 1) Where do I connect the Enable wire from the driver boards on the Ardunio breakout board? 2) The version 1.1 boards have sync wires that are to be connected together but the 1.2 board doesn't, what am I supposed to do in thiby reece.arnott - Controllers
I think compiled vs. interpreted is the biggest argument against python but Java isn't necessarily 'the best' language either. Having said that, speed isn't really a factor in the long run as any differences will be minuscule compared to Moores Law (eg. 20% difference in speed is approx. equivalent of a difference of 4 months in terms of purchasing a computer). My one is 90% complete but has been all year! I'm on a relatively long Christmas holiday at the moment but when I get back I'll only be working half days for a couple of months so I hope to have it finished by the end of Feb (but I said that last year as well). Yeah, what he said :-) The problem seems to be the success of the project at the moment i.e. things are changing quite rapidly, but if you get all the parts in one hit from the online stores they come with links to instructions for the particular versions of the electronics etc. If you've got the money you may want to get a few additional parts as I've found I always seem to break something anby reece.arnott - Reprappers

My original PhD Outline has had to be re-written as it was 'too much development, not enough research' and it had no links to previous research etc. So, the new outline that has been signed off on by one of the two heads of department is: Is it practical for the everyday man to build and use his own 3D fax/photocopy machine? I think what most people are planning on doing is to build another one for just such work and then have the other one to play on themselves. There is a bit of delay in those with a working a Reprap producing a second one however. I would expect that such a scheme would start to gain traction early on in the new year. Thanks Viktor, I've bookmarked the site. I had heard of the project and read some papers that referenced the idea but not been able to find much info on it (something to do with not having a lot of time to do any research yet).by reece.arnott - 3D Scanners, Book Scanners, and Optics
That sort of thing should be possible but I'm not sure how much of a change it would take to the default settings of everything. I'll have a look at it for the next iteration of the LiveCD.by reece.arnott - General
I am in the process of being admitted to doing a PhD (hopefully starting in March next year) as I thought I should spend a few years working full-time on something that would help Reprap along. The original intention of the LiveCD was o give you a known environment to test in with the side benefit of making having a very simple install process as an alternative to the ones linked to here for the various OS's: The problem with that is that I'm just putting everything together, I'm not actually developing anything myself so there is functionality and limitations I don't know about :-(by reece.arnott - RepRap Host
