Just watched James May racing Manx TT on Meccano Racer. Set me thinking, would it be possible to build a 3d printer from Meccano? Roryby Rory166 - General
Ian Your maths looks spot on to me. As you say CE approval must be a big plus. Roryby Rory166 - Ormerod
The following quote from Ormerod168 about fitting the push on Zgear to the motor shaft seems wothy of inclusion in the instructions. Mine was very tight and I wondered what I might be doing to the motor at the time. "When the fit is that tight its paramount to support the axel end, the inner mechanics are not meant to take that kind of stress" Roryby Rory166 - Ormerod
Quote Ormerod168 "When the fit is that tight its paramount to support the axel end, the inner mechanics are not meant to take that kind of stress - which brings me to my point, could the "missing steps" simply be a defect in the motor from mounting the gear?, could the rotor have moved on the axel? - it would surely reduce the momentum If yours was a 2-3 kg press fit like mine, how did you allby Rory166 - Ormerod
Mike Thanks for your help and advice. The silver steel I have ordered is bearing shaft supplied heat treated "Annealed 180-240 BHN" unfortunately I do not know what this means. I would assume that the polishing is done after heat treatment. I wonder if polishing the ck55 rods supplied with the kit would be advantageous, or would it reduce the diameter too much? As I said I dont know much, thby Rory166 - Ormerod
Looks nice but one should be aware that there is no tip cooling provided so a separate fan would normally be used with this type I think. Roryby Rory166 - Ormerod
Nophead What is the internet version of the we are not worthy salute. Whatever it is I am doing it now. Clearly you picked sensible values for your resistors, and RRP are using much higher values, I would like to think this is down to their having thoroughly researched and tested their choice. It does seem a bit of a compromise all this power supply business. The ATX can be very cheap and haby Rory166 - Ormerod
Mike The silver steel I have ordered is polished apparently. Both the ck55 and silver steel rods are hardened. I do not like the idea of plating much for a bearing surface. So far I can only find chrome plated linear motion rod from one US ebay supplier. Can you be specific about the Ebay source for your recommendation? roryby Rory166 - Ormerod
Treth I have traced out the power PCB myself and it is very simple, all like supplies are connected together and the resistors to ground added. There are 2 leds and link for psu enable and 5v stb. Our ATX has only one 12v rail but the two rail type might not appreciate being so connected, just beware if replacing the ATX. I like your idea of connecting LEDs to the unused 3.3v rail. We couldby Rory166 - Ormerod
The material used by RRP is ck55 . I as an electronics engineer know less than I would like about metals. Having taken advice from someone who knows more than me and before the RRP information became public I ordered some Ground and polished Silver steel now I am not sure if what I have ordered is suitable? Dmould Whilst not disagreeing with you. There is a post somwhere here that I have replicated Radians work using a battery scope and Duet powered from Laptop USB ie no mains at all, not even laptop charger. There was a suggestion about using two scope probes in difference mode AC coupled with the two earth clips joined but not connected. I have yet to try this but I believe Radian has. Roryby Rory166 - Ormerod
Treth What scope were you considering? I bought a Hantek 1062B but have yet to fully master its capabilities. Are you still quite sure about your sense comment? All This thread is getting very long and quite hard to follow. Perhaps a thread for proven conclusions would be beneficial. Roryby Rory166 - Ormerod
Treth It would seem from your figures that the Ormorod just fails to provide the minimum load required. However it is a 550W ATX so may have different specs. Roryby Rory166 - Ormerod
Analysing the printing process it seems to me there is no substitute for accurate adjustment of the axes. To rely on electronic adjustment is in my view second best. The printed parts can let the builder down but by fettling the parts correct alignment can be restored. A small error in a printed part can be amplified by the length of the axis to a significant error. A good engineers square anby Rory166 - Ormerod
Nophead(Chris Palmer) has confirmed the values of resistor used to achieve regulation on ATX power supplies for the 12v Mendel 90 as being 10R and 4.7R on the 5v and 3.3v rails. Whereas RRP have used 30R and 22R. Apparently this type of supply regulates the 5v rail and other rails do not have their own regulation? The Mendel 90 electronics are different but the bed is the same, motors may be moby Rory166 - Ormerod
Treth Yes you are correct these are loads for 5v and 3.3v. They may be higher resistance than used on the Mendel 90. Roryby Rory166 - Ormerod
hi Is the bearing which runs on the x-axis acrylic turning freely. If not see thread. Roryby Rory166 - Ormerod
A couple of points raised on this thread. The 24 pin and the 4 pin ATX connectors have 12v circuits. The ATX spec may allow for these to be different supplies but the ACE version does indeed only have one (likewise Alpine I assume). Roryby Rory166 - Ormerod
That must be the stuff ck55. precision induction hardened ground rod. The threaded rod is stainless I assume but have not tried the magnet test. Rory In my ignorance I have ordered another type of hardened ground rod, at this stage I cannot say for sure which is best. Looking at the build instructions I cannot see any mention of the fifth mounting screw. I seems a shame that the aluminium heat spreader does not cover the 5th hole in the pcb to allow the adjustment of both together. Once that is in place the two outer screw will be irrelevant as the MDF has negligible stiffness at that point. Rory DC Nice tip abot the 10mm clips. I am concerned about the lby Rory166 - Ormerod
Hi Matt Thought this thread had died. Good work the Duet is from think3d and is 120 pounds. I was sent an ACE psu which is similar but can be cheaper at 10.50 plus VAT. Rory Edit I am certain stainless steel rod is unsuitable, Ian I think has said they use Ck55 steel but I will check.by Rory166 - Ormerod
Hi All I am working on replicating the Ormerod and so far a meterial cost of 300-350 seems to be the best I can do. Rory Mike I am trying to understand the difference between Ground rod and silver steel, Are you saying the rods with the kit are silver steel, I believe Ian from RRP may have said they use ck55 steel. There is an adjustable part rather than sticky tape, they will send one if yoby Rory166 - Ormerod
Treth You must be in a quiet place. I thought my ACE psu fairly quiet. Modern computer fans are rather quiet by being low speed and not very powerful. It seems RRP have found a 20mm fan with a bit more guts to it. The thing I like about you psu suggestion is that it has 2 individual 12v rails so you could feed the bed via external mosfet and opto isolator for complete isolation. Bit enviousby Rory166 - Ormerod
Erik Just since you asked in England we call the measure watch a "Dial Test Indicator" DTI for short. What the yanks call it is anyones guess. Hi Ian Does this mean when I start selling cloned Ormerods provided I give my customers a made up RS order number you will give them free support? Seriously though I apologise for any offense caused by my comments about the wire in close proximity to rotating parts. If I had realized you were involved I would have kept quiet. Dave M Yes I had considered a tie wrap as a possible modification. A printed part that attaches to the rib would be nicer? Roryby Rory166 - Ormerod
Hi all I agree that this construction seems inadequate. You would think an aluminium bed with MDF insulator on top would have been better. I also wonder how the single bearing is supposed to stay attached to the slot it sits in? Rory Dave M Your post crossed with mine. I do not agree that 4 bearings would be a good solution for the following reason. Think of a 3 legged stool it is alwaysby Rory166 - Ormerod
This may take some time as I am not sure if I can display links in body of post. My work stems from a suggestion by David Crocker DC42 that it might me possible to capture the backwash from the fan. No account has been taken of possible clearance issues. The earlier work on the fan duct is also included.
