I believe the ideal printer matching this description is the KODAK Portrait. It has a closed chamber, remote web monitoring and operation, dual hotends (lifting) capable of printing up to 300C, prints Nylon really well, fully automatic, etc etc. Take a look at . Even if there were such a machine, I wonder how much demand there would really be for it. You have the MCOR paper lamination machines, which for a while could be bought for under 10k (now 18k). The Stratasys J750 costs a lot and prints great, but is there a huge demand for it? (given the high cost) FDM can do full color, in a way:

Check out The Pallette on Kickstarter. It splices filaments to color objects using a single nozzle.

The Smoothieboard is excellent, and the smoothieware firmware is nicely organized software. AFAIK the Duet does not support CoreXY, although that may have changed since I inquired over a year ago.

As I understand it there are all type of inkjet inks, including oil-based, wax-based, etc... some ink should be appropriate. Not all inks can be used by all inkjet nozzles, so maybe we'd have to use a more expensive nozzle. The markers are not identical to an inkjet, so an inkjet has to be confirmed. But I've seen in internet someone using Nicolas' reprap inkjet, and it does color the plastic...

If you have a removable platform, like the glass or mirror on which you print, then each time you put it back it could be out of alignment... Also if the machine is to be used by others, you eliminate the need to learn how to level the bed properly. If it's a sturdy frame and you are an expert user, you probably can do without it. Regards

Our printers are CoreXY and have auto levelling via a capacitive sensor. It's very useful, your object is always perpendicular to the real print surface. It takes three clicks to start printing (less if the temp is set in the code already). No callibration to make. Works great! www.kikailabs.com.ar

paste magnets beneath the glass, and have a metal part on the platform for it to adhere to... works great for us at Kikai Labs! Just be careful when removing the object from the glass when it's on the table, using a spatula, since the magnets will prevent the glass from lying flat on the table.

it's an interesting idea, I was also wanting to try something like that... maybe a foam of some type? a gel? you could insulate the tip of the nozzle with kapton or ceramic paper... FDM definitely needs a better support medium. You should be able to start printing on this material, not just hold up a filament. Let us know your results!

The inkjet can be in a separate attachment and work after the current layer is finished. The slicer does not need to do it, we used a separate program to generate the needed gcode and merge the result with the objects' gcode, so no mods are needed to the Slicer itself. It works. I think mixing liquid dyes with molten plastic will lead to bubbles when it hits the melting chamber, like what happens with soggy (humid) filament... Painting after extrusion, on the other hand, is on cool plastic. One thing to remember about painting is it does not need to be a full-color spectrum capability in order to be useful... being able to paint in just a few colors is still a huge adva
