Just a quick update to let you know this (and other RepRap projects) have not been forgotten (nor abandonded). There has been a fair bit of activity with the AOI 2.5 release. I am still dealing with some minor coding for that. Then I will be able to complete a few things for the benefit of RepRap. Cheers! Nikby Nik777 - RepRap Host
Thanks for the clarification folks ) I am working on a CAD addition to AOI, as a background task. I'll let you know how it is looking around the end of the year. The plan is basically to add comprehensive 2D drafting abilities to AOI (in the form of a plugin), and then provide some added features to support deriving 3D shapes from the 2D designs. This would hopefully allow people to work in plby Nik777 - RepRap Host
Just thought I'd ask: What is the status of CAD software in RepRap? There are a number of efforts afoot to add CAD abilities to ArtOfIllusion; nad I see a reference to "Kicad" in this forum, so I was just wondering where the RepRap people were at with this? Cheers! Nikby Nik777 - RepRap Host
QuoteI had to disable OpenGL in AoI about a year ago because it was causing the driver for my ATI video card to hang as often as not. The same JOGL user-manual indicates that at least one (and possibly more) ATI cards were affected on Win XP by an ATI driver bug which caused a serious memory leak. If you haven't updated your ATI drivers since you disabled JOGL, then you might consider trying Jby Nik777 - RepRap Host
With regard to JOGL, I've just read the following in the current JOGL user-guide: Quote For correct operation, it is necessary to specify the system property -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true when running JOGL applications on Windows; this system property disables the use of DirectDraw by Java2D. There are driver-level incompatibilities between DirectDraw and OpenGL which manifest themselves as applicatby Nik777 - RepRap Host
Thanks for the encouragemnt for Claoi. It's been a pet project of mine for a while now (I'm very much a CLI kinda guy anyway (real men don't eat Guishe!)). I'll code the file-open/file-save changes first, then I'll get the Claoi stuff ready for initial use. And I'll certainly announce it here on the forums. Quote(after a slight delay!) QuoteWell, I was thinking that many such users are at least somewhat comfortable with an office suite. You open a spreadsheet by double clicking on it. You edit it, you print it, you save it and the default file format is a ... spreadsheet [...] As you point out later in your post, there are (significant) differences between what STL and AOI can store in a document. The difference is more like tby Nik777 - RepRap Host
Quote1) Disabling OpenGl makes it start instantly! Coowell Makes me feel like a regular Sherlock! Ok, there may be some hope down the track: I don't use Windows myself (unless forced), but I have noticed a significant increase in OpenGl problems being reported by Windows AOI users since we upgraded AOI to use to the latest JOGL (Java OpenGL Library). I theorised at the time that there wereby Nik777 - RepRap Host
Hi Chris, QuoteIt draws the frame window and the objects window with the objects in it almost instantly[\quote] Ok, from what you are describing, the delay is in the actual rendering of the views (and possibly generation of the rendering meshes). So, I can suggest a few things that could cause an unusual delay in that part of the process: 1. Your OpenGL driver is in fact making things slower.by Nik777 - RepRap Host
Hi All, Thank you all for both your feedback and encouragement. I had considered the 'user preference' solution. I'll think on it a bit more. The problem I see with the 'smart-silent' approach is that it doesn't actually help eliminate any of the user confusion, and may end up adding to it. QuoteWhile you're in there... adding a way to cause AOI to load a file and then save/export it in anotheby Nik777 - RepRap Host
Hi All, So, I've implemented a test version of the initial 'auto-import' logic in AOI. With this, when AOI fails to read a file as an AOI scene file, it looks at the filename suffix, and tries to find a 'registered' translator for files associated with that suffix. It works really well too... So, now I have an unnamed scene as the result of auto-importing an STL file, and I want to saveby Nik777 - RepRap Host
Just to be clear: In AOI, the 'File | Open' option expects only AOI scene files (xxx.aoi). If you want to read/write a file in a different format you currently need to use the 'File | Import' (for read) and 'File | Export' (for write) options. So, to read an STL file into AOI, you need to open AOI, then select 'File | Import'. The list of available file translators will be displayed in a sub-meby Nik777 - RepRap Host
Hi Nophead, Could you let me know which fields are giving you this behaviour? AOI uses a fairly small set of input fields, so it shouldn't be too hard to find the one(s) doing this and make sure they normally show the minus sign. I've identified the fields in the Object property window, and the Object layout window. Are there any others which a causing you grief? Cheers! Nikby Nik777 - RepRap Host
Hi Folks, I think the issue you've identified here indicates a definite improvement that could be made to AOI. I'll look into teaching AOI how to use file associations to try opening files which aren't in the AOI "native" format. Cheers! Nikby Nik777 - RepRap Host
Hi Folks, There is probably nothing I can do about the time it takes AOI to open the file, or regenerate the boolean representation. However, I can try to get a progress bar in there. I had been thinking that would be a good idea recently as well. Edit: I'm not convinced that being written in Java is actually the problem in this case. I think the reason it takes the time it does is the way Boolby Nik777 - RepRap Host
