I tried that with Shapelock. The main problem with it is that the melting temperature is too low. The heat from the extrusion melts the raft enough that the build can pull away and warp.by degroof - Mechanics
I tried cork last night. Found some A4 size sheets at the local craft store. Less than 1mm thick and about $1 per sheet. I attached some to a board and tried it out. ABS extrusion sticks very well. The main problem is that it's pretty much single-use. You can't remove the print without destroying the cork.by degroof - Mechanics
There's a ring here: Maybe you could hollow out the spot just behind the RepRap logo and insert a green LED.by degroof - RepLab Working Group
I recently bought some from Science Store in the UK. It took 19 days for them to show up: 2 to fill the order, 8 to get from Hoddesdon UK to my local post office and 9 days for the post office to figure out how to get the package the remaining 4 miles to my house. That last bit is a story in itself. I happened to find a slip of paper on the ground a week ago. Apparently, the postal carrier hadby degroof - Reprappers
I've got a Darwin more or less running. It's using the PIC electronics and the 0.8.3 software. It's not the latest version of everything and it's not pretty but it's stable. For the most part, I "just built it". I wasn't too picky about most things. As far as I can tell, the two places where attention to detail matter most are the extruder and the bed alignment. Everything else is fairly forgivby degroof - General
Has anyone tried using a heated raft? Something like a ceramic heating element or a peltier coffee cup warmer mounted on the bed with, say, some sort of unglazed ceramic tile on top?by degroof - Mechanics
From personal experience: X axis: belt skips Y axis: either both belts skip or one does, skewing the X axis Z axis: head crashesby degroof - Controllers
Good idea. It did seem to warp on the grain.by degroof - Mechanics
I also picked up some 3mm balsa to see how that worked. I didn't have much time to play with it yesterday but it looks pretty good. I ran the first layer as close to the raft as I dared and that seemed to help bond it. The raft needs to be held down to the bed pretty tightly, though, as it's fairly flexible. Maybe a thicker piece would be better. I've also tried printing on a raft of ShapeLock (by degroof - Mechanics
I've got a Darwin running at a 3mm/s extrusion rate. That's definitely not the slowest it can go.by degroof - Mechanics
I've run into that sort of thing when Sun updates their JRE. It installs a new runtime but doesn't re-point to any extended libraries I had installed. The library it's having trouble with in your case is the RXTX stuff. You may need to reinstall it or move it to a new location. More info here:by degroof - RepRap Host
After several tries, I've given up on the plastic canvas. If I lower the nozzle enough to make the extrusion stick, the plastic canvas melts. Odd thing is that plain old Scotch double-sided tape by itself worked better than the plastic canvas. Not quite good enough to prevent warping, though.by degroof - Mechanics
I stopped by the local craft store and picked up some #14 plastic canvas. Attached it to the bed with some double-sided tape. Never got as far as testing warping. The ABS doesn't stick to it.by degroof - Mechanics
A thought just occurred to me. Craft stores have this stuff called "plastic canvas". It's usually used for yarn needlepoint. It's basically just a sheet of plastic grid. Probably PVC or nylon. Tends to come in letter-size (A4) sheets for about $0.50 per sheet. It usually comes in #7, #10 an #14 sizes (indicating number of holes per inch) so that would be 3.6mm, 2.5mm and 1.8mm pitch. I ran into the same problem. I ended up making one out of a lump of polymorph (handy stuff to have around). Melted it, made an impression with a piece of belt, then used that to splice the belt. Another thing you'll probably run into is that the belt might be a bit loose. A lot of people have run into this and have improvised various belt tensioning rigs to compensate. There's also a set of parby degroof - Mechanics
I've been using a sheet of polymorph. When the build is done, I heat it up, peel it off and roll it out for the next build. I've been using a pasta roller to make the sheets.by degroof - Mechanics

Neat. You could make a macro-sized one with three solenoids, a threaded rod and a slightly-larger diameter tube with internal corrugations that matched the pitch of the rod. The solenoids would be sequenced to hula the tube around the rod.by degroof - General
I have two kids, 5 and 10, who are both fairly bright. This weekend, I printed off two RepRap rings, which they though were really cool. I used AOI to scale down the one in for the five-year-old. My ten-year-old is interested in designing objects to print. I've got a PC that I'll be installing Ubuntu on and I'll add AOI for him. He'll be starting middle school a year from now. I have terrible color vision. I fail the Ishihara tests every time. Fortunately, there are only a handful of common resistor values. The first two color bands are almost always: brown black = 10 brown red = 12 brown green = 15 brown gray = 18 red red = 22 red violet = 27 orange orange = 33 orange white = 39 yellow violet = 47 green blue = 56 blue gray = 68 gray red = 82 That covers theby degroof - Controllers

On the other hand, the RepRap extruder could be converted into a handheld welder fairly easily. Battery pack, thermostat circuit, trigger switch... Might be handy for making on-the-spot repairs.by degroof - General
How small do you want to go? I could see something using 4 servos: 3 for positioning, 1 for filament extruder. The 3 positioning servos could be chained together robot-arm-style with the extruder mounted on the last segment. Instead of 3mm welding rod, you could use nylon fishing line. The heater would need to run hotter but it could be much smaller and lighter. No idea how precise or repeataby degroof - General
There should be a geometry setting in the properties file. Changing it from "cartesian" to "nullcartesian" should allow it to work without hardware attached. On the other hand, the host shouldn't have crashed.by degroof - RepRap Host
