They claims that atmega16u2 is better, are because 99% of ft232 chips on chinese boards are fakes. And fake ft232 cause problems with drivers. They add 1117 ldo regulator because they must to. Ft232 on one of outputs give 3,3v needed to power sd card. But this is very good decision because ft232 3,3v output has very low amperage (only 50mA, compared to 800mA from 1117) and can cause reset of entiby inz.krzys - Controllers

I have the same problem. I try upload firmware with usbasp to bypass possible problems with drivers but its still not work. Only thing that work is "blink" sketch uploaded with usbasp. So I think that it must be fake ftdi chip issue. I desolder ftdi chip and connect rx,tx,gnd,dtr pins from external usb-rs232 converter (based on ch340 chip) directly to melzi board. Then i connect external 3,3V poby inz.krzys - Controllers

When I change my operation system from xp to win10 i face this problem. Older drivers doesn't work. Can I simply change ftdi chip to some pin-to-pin replacment, ie PL2303HX? I saw on aliexpress that chinese vendors mod melzi to work with ch340 instead of ft232rl but I cant find any schematic with that modyfication. Bluetooth connection never work with my setup so it isn't option for me.by inz.krzys - Prusa i3 and variants
