In theory doing this is simple. A normal moving gantry design can have all kinds of tools on the end. However, especially milling machines and 3d printers have bery different requirements regarding the machine's frame. A milling machine needs a very sturdy frame, otherwise the frame will flex when the milling bit is pushed against the work piece. At best, this will result in bad surface finish,by Cyclonit - Let's design something! (I've got an idea ...)

@cozmicray: I thought about using linear rails, but in all honesty I don't see the benefit justifying the extra effort. My current printer uses rods and it's precision is just fine. @the_digital_dentist: Given that the bed is 300x300mm in size, I want to prevent the bed from twisting, thus the 4 rails. I have used the same layout in a test of mine and have never encountered any binding after everby Cyclonit - CoreXY Machines
@gen2eng: Thanks for pointing me in that direction. I though about constructing something like that myself but I was unsure about its effectiveness. Giving that it appears to be an actually successful product, I'll take that route. It saves me a lot of space and actually grants more than the 300x300x300 volume now. @o_lampe: Many of the parts will require support when printing, but I have quiteby Cyclonit - CoreXY Machines
Hi! A few weeks ago I've started designing a new Core XY printer based on the Hypercube Evolution from Scott3D. My main goal was a 300x300x300mm build volume in a 500x500x500mm profile (+ bowden tube arc on top). Additionally, I want the XY-carriage to be as light as possible to reduce inertia as well as vibrations. The current print volume stands just shy of my goal. The very front left and riby Cyclonit - CoreXY Machines
Hi, this may be a stupid question for many of you, but I am at the very beginning of my research regarding laser engravers/cutters and was wondering how safe safety glasses actually are. I am aware that there are many sunglasses which don't block all UV light, thus I am wondering if laser safety glasses are capable of blocking out all of the harmful light or if its more of a "if you see a brightby Cyclonit - Laser Cutter Working Group

The preview does not show this defect. I'll provide a screenshot later on once I am home. When I rotate the part, the defect stays in approximately the same location, somewhere between 45 and 70° NW. It also happens in slightly curved parts in that orientation, only less pronounced.by Cyclonit - Printing
Hi folks, I have printed quite a lot of things already but just now noticed a weird artifact. Whenever I print somewhat straight thin walls at a certain angle, the perimeter walls do not meet. The attached image is a test print with .8mm thick walls at different angles. As you can see, the "60° NW-SE" wall, is not solid. A 50x50mm square I printed today came out to be 49.87x49.75mm, thus I don'by Cyclonit - Printing
1) I don't think so, but I am not 100% certain. The clearance is ~3mm. If I were to replace the aluminum SH12 rod holders and use printed holders for the Z-rods instead, I'd be able to increase the clearance to ~1cm, but this would require additional printing and I've got the SH12s already. 3) Having the motors up top saves space on the bottom. However, this arrangement prohibits me from using aby Cyclonit - CoreXY Machines
Hi, I'm working on my own core xy printer. My goal is to have a fairly large printing area of 40x40x40 cm without wasting lots of space. The current outer dimensions are 62x54x60 cm, which I am fairly happy about. I'll use a bowden extruder (not yet implemented), which will add some more stuff to the back of the printer (plus spool holder) and I'll have the bowden tube sticking out on the top.
