This is, for all intents and purposes, the forum for the CaliFab. Besides e-mail, this will hopefully be a good way to communicate. Introduce yourself, or if you are in the Central Coast and interested in the project, post here and the city you're in. -JAHernandezby Lompocus - California, Central Coast RUG
Just a thought: Does it duplicate the 3 forums under Objects?by Lompocus - Plastic Extruder Working Group
So it is October 12 and I finally finished the damn frame. That puts me about a week behind my ridiculously ambitious schedule (Hint: that's why it was impossibly ambitious ). Oh well, at least I'm a third of the way there. Things that are done: The FRAME! It actually moves now, all that's left to do is add some grease so it moves smoother. That was around $70, so this is the wallet-friendly Calby Lompocus - Reprappers
Hey, a thread about rods! I'll just add my Q too about this stuff: I'm having problems threading some regular steel rod (not sure about the quality, I found it at homedepot). This is for my own little reprap project, and I would rather thread these rods. I only need an inch at each end threaded, so I'm essentially turning them into studs, 2 feet long with 1 inch at each end threaded, both are 3by Lompocus - Mechanics
Update for October 8. BTW, Crap, I've got 10 days before an arbirary deadline I set some time ago reaches me. Things that I WILL have done by October 18: Everything Alrighty... -I'm no longer going to make any more attempts at threading that damn rod. Instead, here's a better idea: filing and generally roughing up and indenting a very small 1/2" section that is 1" away from the edge of the rod,by Lompocus - Reprappers
John: Yes, I know how the resistors will work. I was hoping for a less... crude way . For now it works, though, and it's cheap, too! Simple's always best. Thanks. R.J.: Originally I had planned to just buy threaded rod. Unfortunately, it turned out a bit expensive for the size I wanted (1/4" was too small, 1/2" too large, 3/8" perfect, cheaper than 1/2", but still too expensive). Secondly, I wasby Lompocus - Reprappers
I'm using WD-40, it's what I have on hand atm and has obviously not been helping. I don't believe my taps have any sort of adjustment beyond simply sticking them in the hand tool, screwing them in, working them on the rod. Not even filing (or grinding either) a V at the end helps. I DID get one to stick by threading 7/16-12 THEN 3/8-16 but A) The threads were loose, and after around 1/2" the rodby Lompocus - Reprappers
Here's an idea: 1) Make a mold for a spindle 2) Melt down all plastic available, or break it up into granules 3) procede to make a plastic pressure molder from scratch 4)... 5) free ABS spindles!by Lompocus - General
At first I tried working out how I could build a RepRap from scratch. That proved near impossible. Next came the McWire: it too turned out overbuilt and extraordinarily difficult to build due to an overarching need for precision in every drill. What's the solution? Build a new CNC machine from scratch. Of course, I've learned a few things from past experience. I'm keeping the threaded rod concepby Lompocus - Reprappers
Not willing to devote tons of time to a business project but interested in 3D fabrication or a Fab Lab in the Lompoc/Central Coast area? Introduce yourself and your hometown here! Tell your friends about it!by Lompocus - California, Central Coast RUG
You could do simple 3d subtractive carving if you stick a router or router-equivalent toolhead on the reprap. My little central coast thing is working on that. But, of course, it'll take a while. You could also just stick a really strong dremel in there, turn it on, and start carving. I'd imagine you could make a model like now, but reverse it (stick model and subtract it from a digital brick).by Lompocus - CNC Routers, Mills, and Hybrid RepRapping
Hi Joe, I've been "working" with some friends of mine on a repstrap (working as in I've done everything so far, and the others will do... um, something! The extruder I hope). We call it a CalFab 1, and we yes, the name is horribly bland xD. I'll drop you an e-mail, just posting in case for whatever reason you don't see an e-mail.by Lompocus - California, Central Coast RUG
What some others and I have been working on so far is a way to make a RepStrap at home for those who won't necessarily have a ton of scrap metal or other scrap on hand, for under $50 (at least the mechanical portions), and this is very doable. But our project won't be relevant for another few months. It's simpler and cheaper than a McWire. In the meantime, just building a repstrap seems easier.by Lompocus - Mechanics
Welcome to the new California Central Coast RepRap User Group, started by a few friends I've told about the project and myself. For a bit over a week I didn't see a forum, so to coordinate ourselves outside of the forums I started a small website (google sites, so don't expect it to be omgamazing!). The link is below: Consider this forum our 'official' forum for organizing, reprap talk, and mby Lompocus - California, Central Coast RUG
Great, thanks. It might be a while until there's actually a post there, but at least it's "there" for anyone in the area who's interested.by Lompocus - California, Central Coast RUG
Hi, I'm from Lompoc and, unfourtunately with California, this puts me in a bit of a bind. The bay area is a bit far north, and LA, while geographically closer, is hours farther away when you think about the sheer volume of traffic. So, anyways, an idea is to just merge the California forums. There are only four threads in each forum (easier to merge the two forums), and the actual number of peopby Lompocus - California, Central Coast RUG
