I reflashed RC8 and the rebooting is gone but the problem for the rebooting still exist but manifests itself differently. I now get an error message , at the same 'spot', instead of rebooting. The message is that the printing was aborted because of bed heat temps problem. At least I know now where to look.

I now know for sure it's a software problem but I don't know where. I flashed Marlin 1.1 RC8 and the problem is gone. It starts printing at the set height just as you would expect. That means that the problem was not in the physical printer but the software. I have two optical switches coming but I guess I would not need them.
None the less, it still bugs me that I couldn't find the problem in

obewan, I appreciate your persistence in trying to help me.
I carefully checked the excess drop and it's 2.6mm. I also ran a M501 command to read the eeprom. Here is the readout:
SENDING:M501
echo:Hardcoded Default Settings Loaded
echoteps per unit:
echo: M92 X98.50 Y99.50 Z3200.00 E25.00
echo:Maximum feedrates (mm/s):
echo: M203 X300.00 Y300.00 Z15.00 E25.00
echo:Maximum Acceleration (mm/s2)

I'm not sure where to check the eeprom setting but I did attached the configuration. file.

Slic3r used to include a nozzle lift command in the startup g-code
if you see that line after the home axes command get rid of it. All it does
is cause the Z to over ride the limit switch and plunge the nozzle into the bed
Yes, it has this command. I commented it out as you suggested and it still does the dropping

also check your firmware settings to see if these lines ar

I had enabled the SD-support, that's why I was able to choose the file to print. It 'loaded' the file and started the sequence of printing. First is heating the bed. It did it. Once the bed reached the set temps the extruder was supposed to start heating. That's when the software rebooted. It did it over and over again. Every time I choose a file to print and start the printing process it reboots

Could be but then why don't I have the problem with 1.0.2? Only with the RC8? What is RC8 doing that 1.0.2 is not?

When you home Z to 0. then send a M114 from pronterface, does it say that Z is actually 0.
I'll try it and will post my findings.
Tried it and it reported all axis' 0.000.
The only two files that I changed are the configuration.h, had to put my settings for the axis' and the pins.h to have the LCD run reverse, line going down on the display when the knob is turned CW.

A possibility there is a command in your slicer start up G-code. Look there.
I did and there is no wrong command. Besides, shouldn't the home/limit switch stop it from going to low? It looks like the limit switch is disabled once the printing starts.

Dust, I did not make any changes to the printer. It runs normal with Marlin 1.0.2. (Well...not normal but that is another issue, it doesn't reboot, though!) Since I a had problem with RC8 I flashed back to 1.0.2 and it's OK there so the problem is RC8 and not the printer.
BTW, I have a 110V heat bed running over a SSR so power should not be a problem. I can preheat the bed and extruder in RC8 an

What I mean it that when the printer starts to print it drops into the bed.
The bed was leveled using the paper thickness setup. That means that Z 0 is when the nozzle touches the bed and the paper is just rubbing when pulling out, which is the normal setup.
Now I start printing. The bed heats up. When it reaches it's temps the printer homes all axis'. So far so good. Now the extruder heats up

I installed the latest Marlin RC8. All the setups when fine. When I start printing, the bed heats up. Once it reaches the set temps and the extruder is supposed to start heating the software reboots.

I'm using RAMPS 1.4 and Marlin. I used Marlin-Development 03-29-2015 as well as Marlin 1.0.2.1
I don't use Auto Leveling!
I set the nozzle to paper height on all four corners and center bed. I start printing and the bed heats up. When the extruder starts heating the bed homes. So far it's normal. Once the extruder reaches temps and the printing starts the print head moves to the center to start

No, unfortunately not. I just don't use the computer to print on my Prusa. I use the sd card.

foul_owl, did you check the voltage of the power supply WHILE it is powering the bed? I had the same problem with a new power supply. I checked the voltage before connecting it to the printer and it was 12v. I checked the voltage while the bed was heating up and the voltage dropped to 10.2v. NOT ENOUGH to heat the bed. I ended up trashing the brand new power supply and got a xbox 360 203W power s

Yes, I had the eeprom enabled. I commented it out and now the changes in the configuration.h stick. Thanks to both of you for pointing me in the right direction. @Kurzaa, I'll try your tips later, after I have the machine calibrated properly, when I'll enable the eeprom again.

When I run Marlin 1.0.2 I can change the axis step per unit values and they take effect after uploading but I can't get the z steppers to run and I have the voltage up to 1.33V on the pot. When I run Marlin-Development the stepper run smooth as butter already on 1.03V but the adjustment to the step per unit doesn't make any difference. I can put a value of 1 on each axis and it will run the same

I'm using windows 10. I connected my printer, with ramps 1.4 and ATmega 2560 R3, to my computer. When I print small stuff, I can print all day with no problem. When I print an item that takes a long time to print the printer stops and I get the message 'The semaphore timeout period has expired'. Anyone knows how to avoid the problem?

I know it's an old topic but I just ran into this problem too. Card inserted but no sd card message. I tried Neo_999's solution and it didn't work. I checked for the voltage as kwims suggested and it's OK. I switched cards from 32gig to 2gig and the problem remains.
