Aluminum tube is pretty expensive. You could use steel electrical conduit. It is heavier but still pretty light. Comes in 10 foot lengths for only a couple of dollars.
Does the thin plastic keep enough of the warmth in your green house?

Very nice. Thanks.

That should work fine. Gilesbathgate is doing exactly that. Look at his May 5th blog. And... he is printing!

Extruded Aluminum Frames
Looks good.
I like the design except I can't weld anything.
I'm currently making a similar construction using basically 1x2's.
Did you draw it using Sketchup?
If so, would you post the drawing file? I've gotten spoiled for being able to turn pictures, to view them from all directions, that I can't imagine not being able to do that!
A blender file would work too.

Have you any idea what price you're going to ask for the "mendel in a box"? Very interesting.

I missed out on the plastic one. As usual I didn't bid high enough.
It inspired me to try making one out of wood. Check out

If you want to cut thin acrylic forget saws. i]It is easier to scribe it using a sharp knife and snap it over a straight edge. has a good description of cutting acrylic.

Brandon. I'd be interested in one of your Wade's extruders.
Quite a large disparity in the winning price in the last two auctions. I won't bid again on ebay because I would rather just pay a set price.
Can you figure out a fair price that you would be willing to sell for and post on the forum?
I would be willing to buy one for something in the $50 range. I just don't like losing all the time

@Nudel
I went to the garage this morning to start on building the hex shaped bearing beams like I saw in Adesina.
What I did instead was to use the skates I had just removed from the last attempt at a cnc and came up with a way to use them. Little adjustments to make yet but I uploaded a video to show you what I came up with.
Found this on a baby names site: "The meaning of the name Adesina

I just have plenty of the aluminum angle. Don't have any cute little pre-drilled angles.
I do have plenty of power tools. Not a pro just dabble. Here's a picture of the start of the wooden mendel...

The first try is in the background close to the little drill press.

I like the way you have the constraining bearings constructed. The hex shape and the angle brackets are brilliant.
I will incorporate(steal ) those into my design.

That's great! Take some pictures. What an innovative idea. I've resisted the gear/belt because the gears are too expensive.
I might try that.

I did a little construction this morning. Here's some pictures.

What you can't see is the grin on my face. I didn't know this was going to be cute!
After the parts were cut out it only took an hour to get to this stage. It will slow down a lot now.

Have the parts cut out. Will try to get them put together this afternoon. Will take pictures.
Notes on the Wooden-Foton-Mendel:
The bowden extruder would be ideal.
gilesbathgate's z-skate would add rigidity.
Use steel allthread instead of nylon.
The green is plastic strap from Lowe's lumber
banding. Picked up off the floor.
The shuttle's angle needs 2 oversized screw
holes at each corner for a

The print pauses as each g-code is read and step info is computed. Not long. Just long enough to cause a small blob of plastic to ooze out at the end of each move. Especially bad on short moves like with circles. Spoils the print.
YMMV

I'm currently the high bidder. Am I worried about the strength? No. I'll add some reinforcement.
My bid won't go too high because I also think it won't be strong enough. Epoxy for broken parts and replace the nylon screw with steel plus adding the z-supports if needed. I think I can add gilesbathgate's z-skates I could be wrong. Won't be the first money I've wasted playing with making my own rep

zip ties. I drilled a hole through a long nut(can't remember what it's called ) The kind that holds two all thread rods together. Used a bolt through the stepper motor shaft and threaded the nut on to the all thread rod and used a double nut there(one would be enough). Be careful with the metal shavings. Stepper motor magnets are very strong. I used blue tack to keep them out.

@Shayfir-Very nice McWire build. Looking forward to your first print. How much did the belts and pulleys cost?
-------------------------------
I've been slow to use the cable drive I've been working on because the 1/32" cable I ordered runs up over the other windings or runs over to the edge and then winds over the previous windings. The cable is stiff but does work. When you're winding it don't

Yeah. The pulleys I used are only 1" diameter.
Post a picture of what you're doing. I found some 1/32" steel cable at McMaster-Carr that might work. Minimum length to buy is 50 feet at $0.07/foot and 185lb strength. I will buy some when I can remember what the other thing was I needed!

Hmmm. I had all the parts to make a standard McWire. Maybe I should just dig them all up and start over but use the cable drive.
I bought some 50lb test braded fishing line. No luck. It started out great but seemed to flatten and then rolled up on the other layers. Still worked but the steps would not be the same length for those versus the lower layer.
My next thought is kite string. I'm worr
