Hi Steve ~ I also have Big heat sinks with a big fan on my 1.2 stepper boards. The reason the chips need heat sinks on the 1.2 boards is that they are Transistor based thus have a higher voltage drop across them hence more power to dissipate. The reason your steppers are now not getting hos could be that you are now using the motor enable pin on the stepper boards. Hence the Steppers are nowby BodgeIt - General
Good point only having my motors mounted on MDF.. I had forgoten about the steppers as they do get quite hot. In that case enclosing the Frame from drafts with the Extraction fans triggered at say 30-40C, would still save power reduce switching noise and maintain an internal temprature stability which should still provide a more stable printing environment. Nophead have you ever had any of yoby BodgeIt - General
I think the electronics is more expensive than it could be. There is a lot to be said for just stepping back from the current electronics. Looking at what is required defining a spec then designing a solution that fits the requirement. Part of this spec should be:- Ease of building electronics for a novice at home. Ability to obtain parts as a hobbyist. Cost of the parts. Design should allowby BodgeIt - Next Wave Electronics Working Group
I'm only talking about maintaining slightly higher ambient temprature not heating the space to a temprature that would affect the printed parts of Mendel. May be 60C is too high.. from my reading 60C would not affect the stability of the printed parts that Mendel is made of, it would mean that printing would not be so affected by local ambient temprature giving it less chance of extruder coolingby BodgeIt - General

Just search on EBay for Solder paste I bought 3 150ml syringes of it on eBay its in my fridge as it recommends fridge storage to maintain its shelf life. You don't need very much of it I'm hoping it will last a lot longer than its use by date in the fridge. Any electronics R&D distributor like Farnell or RS stock full price Solder paste as well both on next day delivery.by BodgeIt - General
I think by putting clear perspex around the sides of Mendel with an extractor fan to remove the fumes could be a neat way to improve things generally. As mentioned previously the internal temprature can not be too high else the printer will stat bending itself out of shape. I would think controlling the internal ambient temprature would improve the general running of a RepRap. It would also saveby BodgeIt - General
Love it.. been busy so not got into the forum for a while.. Like the idea of using film having the belt run at 25Fps or whatever film is filmed at with a fixed light source in between the two strips of film and a lens mounted on the frame projecting the image on the wall providing visual entertainment whilst printing.by BodgeIt - Reprappers
Great news for all us Reprappers! I have been lucky enough to be allocated a stand at MAKER FAIRE 2010 in Newcastle, UK. This is the second one to be held here following its success in 2009 which had a great response and caught the attention of the BBC! I have been initially allocated a 3x3m slot but can request more space if needed. It will have internet connection which will be useful to hookby BodgeIt - General
Oh thank you Victor I had missed seeing that post on the Milling Hexpod. It looks like it is a model plane brush less motor that's being used there. Its amazing how many little gems like that are hidden in the forum. Sebastien's idea of separating the threads out in to more specialized sections. Then also creating specialist areas in the Wiki should prevent gems like this vanishing from sightby BodgeIt - Robots!
I usd some high temprature self amalgamating pipe repair tape over the Kaptan tape. Its like a rubber selef amalgamating tape its in B&Q in the UK so it is likely to be avalible else where as well like the plastic corner blocks. Its just called high temprature pipe repair tape ~ think it was a max temp of 250C.by BodgeIt - Mechanics
With Mendel the mere fact it looks like a tent. It would be very easy to make a Plastic tent to pop over with an extractor fan mounted opposite the motherboard on the frame. Then use some tumble dryer venting tube to the nearest window.by BodgeIt - General

Hey thank you guys.. I have used it again all your Work is very much appreciated. I liked the Item I found on your Metafilter Link it is also a new concept. So how about a RepRap Mendel that dose that? With these extra conditions added. Thus the buyer gets it then prints three copies of it self. It then sells 2 sets of Mendel printed parts. The buyer keeps 1 sets of Mendel printed parts. Thby BodgeIt - Administration, Announcements, Policy

Buying the kit of electronics when they sold them was cheaper if in the UK. So if you are not in the USA or not involved in electronics buy a built version Surface mount boards are a challenge. If in electronics there are cheaper solutions by using other stepper controllers like Here is the answer to the question you didn't ask on total cost to build dyslexic reading or a bee in my bonnet causeby BodgeIt - Reprappers

I agree with Bruce we need to always maintain an upward compatible path so that every one in the Repap community. Can easily upgrade to the high tech versions as they become more involved in the RepRap project. This will mean that older versions will gradually become available for new RepRap builders. Thus keeping the New rep-rapers starting cost down. Its also a good way of off setting the addby BodgeIt - Controllers

Triffid Hunter. Is not the layer thickness defined by the extrusion size thus it must be the same for the slice size? So if you have 0.6mm extrusion size you slice in 0.6mm steps If you can reduce the extrusion size by stretching turning 0.6mm into 0.3mm Then you slice at 0.3mm intervals to achieve 0.3mm you adjust the speed of head movement from A to B this again is a set figure for 0.3 extrby BodgeIt - General
Maybe I am being very ignorant naive as I have as yet to extruded. I would have thought: I can control the extruder on its own. Set the temp in the PID like temprature control for one of these settings:- Temperature setting for making raft Temperature Setting for extruding 0.6mm filament. Extrusion speed is also a parameter that should go hand in hand with the extrusion type As far as the eby BodgeIt - General
With a cheap £10 stepper the problem I am seeing is not lack of torque. I am getting a lack of grip on driving ABS filament. The maximum pull I get is 1.5 Kg to 2Kg pull before the drive cuts the ABS filament instead of driving it.. So far I have used the splined stepper this will give the highest torque. As it is the smallest drive diameter @ 5mm it provides us with the highest non-geared reby BodgeIt - Reprappers
I must point out that Milly will not be making a profit! As any one in the UK who orders from Makerbot will find out. You will get charged VAT this is a minimal cost of 17.5%. On top of that cost you will then be charged an additional handling charge from the Carrier. For example last year I was charged these amounts on imported orders: An Extra £8 by the post office. An Extra £10 by DHL Aby BodgeIt - Reprappers

To All Having lost the brass blank I made yesterday for he worm drive. No idea how or where so making another one. I am going to try using some tiny 10mm gears I got from Farnnell. They have 48 teeth 13 in a quarter (4 x 13)- 4 I will also try the Conrad coupler that is 7.78mm with 8 teeth a 1/4 (4 x 8) -4 = 28 teeth I may try tapping a Conrad gear into a worm as well. Any other suggestions aby BodgeIt - Reprappers
Back on caffeine now so a little calmer.. Apparently I'm radioactive for 24 hours now so must not see Pregnant women or children for 24 hours. @ casainho. A rep-strap has not got any printed parts so there is no cost of Printing. Thus it can be built for £150 or $240. In fact that is exactly what I have done !! I will be producing a full spread sheet of exact costs once It is printing. Iby BodgeIt - General

So with my 0.8 mill head fitted and the G code generated for a tool path that can cut a layer from 0-0.5mm thick. I use any application to gather a tool path or slice for that layer it generates yet another 0-0.5mm thick Section of G code. So far I still do not need to set any thread sizes the only additional parameters I need are Depth of each layer and the tool size and feed rate which will bby BodgeIt - General
oh I must be using G code incorrectly I never give the Gcode a thread size ? How do you give G Code a thread size... ? If I hand code G-code I enter the G code instructions in mm. If I set my CNC for inches I would enter the G code instructions in inches. Am I misunderstanding the use of G code? Thus I can make a G-code file for any of my machines set up in mm. This very same file I can thby BodgeIt - General
