Sublime - Thanks for the quick response. I really appreciate it. > Ok first we should note that the fans will turn > themselves off if the hotend goes below a certain > temperature as set in the firmware config. Understood. It's one of the first things I considered. The hotend temperature (and therefore the thermistor) seems to be OK judging by the temperature readings on the display aby Robots-Dreams - Tantillus
The fans on my Tantillus suddenly started working strangely. I first noticed the problem a few days ago during a long print (about three hours). The fans start, get up to speed, then slow down and stop every time they get a Fan On (M106 S120) command. I thought it might be related to the firmware modification for Kisslicer, but that change should only affect the minimum fan speed. Testing the fby Robots-Dreams - Tantillus
Thanks! That's really helpful. I haven't tried the latest Beta yet - probably because of my frustrating experiences with Slic3r. I'll give it a try over the weekend. Here's a macro shot of the figure with extreme flash to bring out the detail:by Robots-Dreams - Tantillus
I've had pretty good luck printing down to 50 microns and am tempted to go even lower. This Hotei figure was printed with 50 micron layers at 190 degrees: It looks much better in person than in the photo because I couldn't get the camera to pickup all the detail. The detail in the toes and embossed surface patterns is great - much better than I expected. The plastic surface does a bit granulby Robots-Dreams - Tantillus

Sublime Wrote: > I decided to take some time off of making complete > kits to spend time being a dad. Speaking from personal experience you definitely made the right choice. As I mentioned in my previous post, KISSlicer tends to keep the start/end of each layer aligned as the height increases. Here's an example of the Squirrel print in PLA with 100 micron layers: I can rotate the part so that the line of start/end points is positioned on the back of the part where it would be least objectionable. But, I would also like to minimize its visibility as much as possiblby Robots-Dreams - Tantillus
Just a quick update on my progress with KISSlicer- Rabbits: Of course, I could have improved the Slic3r print by fine tuning the setup parameters. The primary point of this comparison is that KISSlicer produced a very good (still not perfect) print with no fine tuning. A big challenge in printing this particular part is the neck area as it blends up into the face. The maximum angle is right aby Robots-Dreams - Tantillus
Using KISSlicer with Tantillus is quite frustrating! Why? Simple - now I want to go back and reprint a lot of the parts I printed using Slic3r! The only problem was that the arch end separated from the print bed, as Sublime predicted. Everything else was perfect.by Robots-Dreams - Tantillus
That looks great. Very encouraging. I have KISSlicer installed and running now. My first print using KISSlicer is the Torture Test part with 100 micron layers. It's 18% through the printing process at the moment and looks very smooth and clean. I don't think it would be misleading that it's the best looking part I've been able to print so far. I'll know more in the morning. Other subjective obsby Robots-Dreams - Tantillus

Thanks. That's very helpful. As you pointed out, I can see that most of the problem comes from the slicing software path planning. In addition to getting it to print each island completely, it would be great if we could control the start point(s). I could live with some of the irregularities if I had control over where they appear on the part. For example, if I could specify that the path stby Robots-Dreams - Tantillus
Downloaded the Gridded Globe from Thingiverse, scaled it to 70%, added a small circular base, then did a quick test print: Printed in PLA with 150 micron layers. Next step is to decrease the layer height, fine tune the extruder retraction settings, and tilt the globe slightly so that it matches the original Unisphere.by Robots-Dreams - Tantillus

You can use alternative G-code generators like Skeinforge, KISSlicer, and others. The challenge will be to come up with a settings that work well. Unfortunately each of the generators seem to use a different approach to modelling the plastic extrusion process, so you can't just copy the Slicer settings and past them into KISSlicer.
