Nice! I must get some abs so I can print one of those little trays.by Greg Frost - General
I used 3mm aluminium. Local metal shop cut it for me. I bought 15 at the time and they were about$6 each. Again, I think adjustable is a waste of time. Make it rigid, adjust once with shims and it should stay flat and level.by Greg Frost - General Mendel Topics

If you can get it to work that way, it is a great way to get a visual on the internal structure of the hotend. Like if there was a bulge where the insulator meets the heatblock.by Greg Frost - General

Perhaps the g code is trying to move the z axis too fast and it is missing some steps?by Greg Frost - Reprappers
There are a couple of ways to use a thermocouple. One is witha chip like the MAX6675 which has a digital SPI interface that must be supported by the firmware. Another way is with a chip like the AD595 which generates an analog signal proportional to the temperature, so can be connected to an analog input on the electronics, but again you would need firmware support to be able to convert the measuby Greg Frost - General
Is it possible that the heater is short circuited to the heat block? I have had that happen and it toasted the thermocouple wires. You should be able to check that with a multimeter.by Greg Frost - General
the other thing you can do is reduce the jerk setting in the firmware. perhaps there is a resonance in the gcode at that point that allows it to build up enough momentum to cause a motor skip. Looking closer, I think it does look like skipped steps rather than pulley slip.by Greg Frost - General
Kaptop tape seems to do the trick for pla at least and many people have great success printing straight on glass. That should solve that issue for at least a couple of materials.by Greg Frost - Kartik M. Gada Humanitarian Innovation Prize

as fast in Z as in X and Y, no lead screw related Z wobble issues (although it probably comes with its own artefacts). only 3 motors for movement instead of traditional prusa 4. more commonality of parts. much taller build volume (possibly at the expense of rigidity).by Greg Frost - General

Nophead: I have wondered about this aspect of hotend designs. If the gap is inside the hotend (ie if the insert slid a significant way into the heat block) so that it was lower than the glass transition area, would this cause a problem? I can see how if a gap forms where the insulator meets the hotend it could bulge and jam, but if it is all molten what would be the problem? My hotends have a verby Greg Frost - General

I haven't been there until just now, but when I attempted to sign up with the username 'Greg Frost' it responded with a "regular expression mismatch error" which, being the fortran shopping list kind of guy I am, I immediately realised that this was because there was a space in my username, but Joe Thingi might struggle with that. I'll have a closer look at the other features of the site...by Greg Frost - General

I like the idea of using GitHub to store the data for models, but having a slicker front end that so that people just wanting to browse don't need to deal with the GitHub interface. We could have some sort of standard for descriptions (description.txt) and instructions(instructions.txt) much like README files are understood to be descriptions by the GitHub interface itself. What kind of belts and pulleys are you using? More flexible belt like t2.5 gt2 or mxl with machined pulleys can help reduce backlash. Printed pulleys are great for inducing backlash as is t5 belt particularly with the original Mendel x axis.by Greg Frost - General
sounds more like you need to reduce temperature and or tune your retract settings.by Greg Frost - General Mendel Topics
Are you actively cooling the cold end of the hotend with a fan. That can reduce the length of the rubbery plug that the partially melted plastic forms and hence reduce the extrusion pressure needed. As someone else mentioned, having the idler in the extruder too tight can cause premature stripping, as can having it too loose. To measure the orifice length Brian (the jhead man) made a stand usingby Greg Frost - Reprappers
If your extruder is weak, why do you want to reuse the motor? Also, perhaps the problem is not that your extruders is weak, but that your hotend requires too much extrusion force.by Greg Frost - Reprappers
I use wooden blocks cut from an 18x18 mm pine rod as a spacer. This also prevents heat from the aluminium heat bed from softening my pla bearing holder. I connect the bearing holder to the block using 2countersunk wood screws and the plate to the block using a single screw so that it is self aligning. You should only need to level it once which I do with a paper shim if necessary. Of the 15 printby Greg Frost - General Mendel Topics
You can't use engineering terms like efficiency and expect to be taken seriously when you are really meaning effectiveness. Heater cartridges may well be more effective, but that will be because they produce more power or have better thermal transfer characteristics but they are not more efficient.by Greg Frost - General
