i'm not certain what you mean by clones. if you want a mendel, i think it's designed for a .1 mm accuracy. I'm assuming darwin is the same. But that is just a specification, and it really will depend much more on how you build it and calibrate it. I think the Go! Up! printer is higher accuracy, but it not a "clone" of a reprap, and you don't build it yourself, not open sourced, proprietary softby Buback - General

Yeah, there just aren't any stores out there for hobbyists anymore. I estimate about 10% of my mendel costs went into shipping :-( . it's a small price to pay when end up with a 3d printer, though. "Learn openSCAD" would probably be good advise. So much is being done with it these days, knowing it will be to your advantage in the long run.by Buback - New Jersey RepRap User Group

the current momentum seems to be around the Prusa fork, and it requires fewer parts and hardware, so is cheaper to boot. No stores in particular, really. there's a McMaster-Carr down by trenton, so if you order from then it often comes next day or the day after. I'm not really proposing this technique for overhangs (i should have chosen a better example image, as the shell is all overhangs), but rather just for top layers. However, I don't think that overhangs should have to be handled differently, as long as they follow our rough rule of 45 degree max. skeinforge would simply reduce the layer height by half, for example, and then create the path basedby Buback - Skeinforge

I think part of the problem is we want more accuracy and precision, which requires greater rigidity, which most likely means metals. threaded rod is just as much of a cheat as extruded aluminum. the rod is easier to source, but the aluminum is more rigid. I designed the OpenX, so i'd say it's much better than the standard carriage :-) I've been using it for months with no fan and i haven't seen any warping. I haven't printed with ABS yet, though. Only PLA, so my extruder only gets to ~200 degrees C. I'm also using carbon fiber rods as the rails, and since the OpenX design exposes the rails, metal rails might get hot enough to warp the carriage, pby Buback - General

Has anyone been using this plugin with SF 40/41? I ask because the Volumetric Dimension should now make this ~trivial to do right with little/no tweaking. I think the plugin only affects shell layers, but the idea can be used to also improve vertical/cross-sectional resolution with domed surfaces and curves. for an example, look at this thing: Nautilus shell it's a nice print, but looks likby Buback - Skeinforge

Many countries do not have the same gun freedom we have here in the US, and that probably will never change. If gun mods get posted on the wiki, their government might just firewall the whole site, denying it's people access to reprap in toto (and also denying us of the innovations their population might bring). it's a great idea, but I wonder why not just use regular aluminum extrusion and use the channels as your guides? the rails he wants to build into the extrusion make it easier, it seems, to use a flat piece of aluminum as the carriage, but since we can print complex carriages, we probably don't need the extra rail. I actually have one of those. In practice i don't think it boosts the gain much, but it does block out interference from behind the dish. it's actually the uninspiring performance of those antennas that made me want a printed option.by Buback - Let's design something! (I've got an idea ...)

If the topmost layers don't cool enough, it acts a bit like a wobbly jello mold. that's what happens when i print tall, thin things like on the cathedral spire. the skeinforge cool plugin forces the hot end to slow down or even move away from the freshly printed layer so that it has enough time to cool. Won't the internal stresses of an ABS part warp the paper, and therefore, the part? Heated beds do more than just help the plastic to stick to the build surface; they also relieve some of the warping stresses that build up in the FFM printing process.by Buback - General

A glue stick extruder would be useful for other materials as well. Specifically, i want to try sealing wax (like that used to seal medieval letters). modern sealing wax comes in glue stick form, and in many colors. i would like to experiment with using it as a support material, or possibly for lost wax casting.by Buback - Plastic Extruder Working Group

yep i agree that it's in a bad place with a bad name. it should be up in the top menu on the sidebar or in it's own box like 'Developers', i think. And 'random page' and 'all pages' should be removed completely. 'Main page' should be dropped as well, since the reprap logo takes you there. 'Translations' is kinda pointless, since it's in English. i was just thinking that it might be less work to have something like a user white list. Once a user posts a edit, it isn't displayed till someone (any other white-listed user, i.e. a human and not just admins) confirms the edit as not spam and the user gets added to the whitelist. After the user is white-listed, their comments won't need to be verified. any spambot that slips through can be blaby Buback - Administration, Announcements, Policy

Well I finally experimented with the Aerogel. Conclusion: non ideal, at least as i had it set up. Very messy, as particles get everywhere, and are very abrasive. they also bounce very far (just like silica desiccant. if you haven't played with it, try bouncing it on a hard surface! it's fun!) I saw this tool, an adjustable wrench that uses a fluid/valve system to adjust and lock in place. It got me thinking about using a fluid to transmit force from a motor to the carriage. the motor, mounted to the printer frame, would be attached to a peristaltic pump. oh yeah that's a trick one. I was actually doing something completely different, with borosilicate glass. so, probably not very useful for the standard hot ends. I've not perfected the design i'm working on, and in fact haven't worked on it in months, opting instead to buy a hot end and just get printing. when i eventually get back to it i'll add it to the glass hot end wiki pagesby Buback - General

finding the drill bit is only half the problem. the other half is how to actually drill the hole. most drill chucks won't grab the small bit sizes, and even if they do, usually aren't precise or fast enough to actually drill a .5mm hole. i used a dremel drill press, instead of my big drill press, which worked beautifully (but you'll need to get the chuck attachment).by Buback - General
