@bobc hit it n the head! Open-source Hardware is not just the absence of trying to contain the design. It is an active (or at least one time) release of information which truly enables other to produce that hardware. Maybe someday some entity/organization may exist which gives a "stamp of approval" to designs which are actually pass the "smell test" of being open source.

I love the idea of 3D electroplating. I think our current understanding and application of electroplating would take way to long to be of practical use for 3D printing. You would defiantly need to pioneer some new methods

The RepRap Pro Multi Material Mendel GitHub Does not actual have the STLs for the printer, but it does have the STLs for the extruder... The Multi-Material Mendel Thingiverse page has the printer STLs but not the extruder STLs... I can't tell if the lasercut DXFs are available, or if the ones on github are just for the original mendel... I can't find schematics (or descriptions) of the hobbed

I don't think that is it. It would be cool if it was, because I have one of those on hand actually. The wiki describes it as "8mm M3 hobbed drive". 8mm in what dimension and where? Who knows... It seems to have an m3 thread running down the center...

I just found out that that extruder uses a friction fit gear on the motor and threw up a little in the back of my throat. I think push fit gears violate the "build things that can be taken apart" ethos. But heck I might try building one anyway. Not sure how to get or make the hobbed cylinder they are using though.

We should come up with a series of printed objects (changes yearly?) that demos how awesome RepRep is. Find a way to make the object show that MakerBot is a RepRap rip off for extra gravy

Not everything works out in practice like it does in theory... I have a printer that uses T5 belts that outclasses most GT2 belt using printers. I bet toothed idlers have potential to be a good thing...

The solidoodle belts just rub over a belt? Wow. The solidoodle does look cool though. Maybe LOM 3D printing is the best way to deliver 3D printing to the everyday consumer.

Hi All, Anyone have any ideas for alternate print surfaces? I have printed on blue-painters tape, kapton, glass and aluminum with success and failure on a case by case basis. Heated blue tape is definitely my "go to" method. I was recently considering printing on skateboard style grip tape.
