I wouldn't be able to venture a guess. As far as I know Nophead and I are the only people who have ever been able to print anything successfully with a threaded rod repstrap. For me that's been so long ago and fraught with problems that I'd hesitate to guess. For Nophead, his system is quite special and he is a total genius at making such things work properly. Nophead could easily print suchby Forrest Higgs - General

Perhaps Makerbot will be different, but I do not see BitsFromBytes striving to field lower cost 3D printers. Quite the opposite, in fact. BitsFromBytes seem to be trending towards more expensive, fully assembled and tested printers that can be run straight out of the box.by Forrest Higgs - General

I believe there has been an unofficial agreement with the prize sponsors that Reprap will be handling the team registration and blogging requirements. It's not particularly hard to print a herringbone rack and pinion, once you have the scripts to generate the shapes.by Forrest Higgs - General

Sure seems like there is a lot more bitching and moaning than work going on around here. Seems an odd line of bullshit to find on a rack and pinion thread. Perhaps we should open a bitching and moaning forum just for goinginreverse and those of that kidney. False alarm. Alibre can only import 2D DXF files, not 3D. Sycode makes an Alibre plug-in that allows STLs to be imported. It costs $95, however, which effectively doubles the price of owning Alibre.by Forrest Higgs - 3D Design tools
I got curious about the Alibre/STL issue and took another look. Alibre's manual says that it can import DXF files. Using Meshlab I can convert STL to DXF files. I did this with one of my good STL files and then opened the resulting DXF file in Voloview Express. All of the information is there still. I think I am going to buy a copy of Alibre now that I have a workable, if a bit awkward pathby Forrest Higgs - 3D Design tools

Um, Anton ... why is this sort of inquiry put in the Gada Prize thread? I'm going to move this to the extruder thread.by Forrest Higgs - Plastic Extruder Working Group
I took a serious look at Alibre some time ago. It's a pretty powerful 3D CAD package. That said, the problem with Alibre, iirc, is that while you can export STLs, you can't import them. That means that you can't work with STLs developed and published in places like Thingiverse. That's a major disadvantage.by Forrest Higgs - 3D Design tools
