I really would like clarification about first to file. From what I have gathered all that first to file means in practice is that you can no longer keep private diaries for trade secrets and have entries qualify as prior art for greater than a year. If an invention is publically available then it still would qualify as prior art. To me it seems like the changes actually benefit communities that oby billyzelsnack - General
What's the thinking behind having such a large gap between the hot and cold blocks? I would wager that you'd get a shorter and sharper transition zone by having the cold block right next to but not touching the hot block.by billyzelsnack - General
As for Z.. This might be crazy, but what if you rotated the entire thing 90 degrees so XY becomes XZ and then have the extruder move on a belt driven Y?by billyzelsnack - General
oh that's not my plotter. I've just done MCAD experiments based on the concept from that video. It didn't occur to me to build a moving table though and I think your design is very interesting. Is the pivot slot straight or curved? Is the point of the pivot to gain extra "x"by billyzelsnack - General
Love it. I've made many MCAD experiments from this concept and your variation with the pivot is very interesting. What's the build area?by billyzelsnack - General

Very cool. My brother had been messing around with a single head version of this dual turntable configuration, but he's only made it so far as mocking it up in CAD. The internet is so great. Procrastinate long enough and someone else will build it! haha.by billyzelsnack - Polar Machines, SCARA, Robot Arms
I very much like this ziptie glide surface idea.by billyzelsnack - General
To add another PLA hotend anecdote.. My hotend design does not plug at slow speed or long periods of idle and I think it entirely has to do with the very sharp transition zone and PTFE bridging of the entire top to bottom cold to hot path. The hotend block and fan cooled coldend block are separated by a 0.5mm to 1mm air gap and a thin stainless strap around the blocks prevents the blocks from sepby billyzelsnack - General
I like the idea of ignoring the nozzle and layer height as long as the part looks and functions like it is supposed to then great. Volume is volume and the speed limit these days is volume.by billyzelsnack - Competitions
Please show me where I can buy a $4 stepper. The same forces that make it possible to push a $100 stepper to a "$4" stepper can make it possible for low cost servo availability.by billyzelsnack - Developers
I knee-jerk to the time is money thing. For a very long time I never understood why my dad spent so much time screwing around with our cars. He made more than mechanics so why did he just not take them to mechanics? What I did not factor in is that he enjoys working on cars. $1 at his job did not exchange for $1 working on cars. Pour my own engine block? Sounds like a pretty sweet project.by billyzelsnack - Developers
If time was money then nobody would build a reprap. Time is what you have after you stop exchanging it for money.by billyzelsnack - Developers
Very cool. With the motors powered and not moving does the end effector feel springy at all?by billyzelsnack - Polar Machines, SCARA, Robot Arms

I wonder if it would be possible to create a printing friendly articulation of this actuator. Maybe useful for a scissor or other setups too..by billyzelsnack - General
I've been waiting for someone to get around to this concept. I don't know how they implement the concept, but apparently it is possible to make it very rigid.by billyzelsnack - General
What about a bearing (as in not just the ball) and a spherical magnet. The magnet would get a circle seat and the bearing could rotate too.by billyzelsnack - General
It is pretty amazing that this is your first printer AND that you designed it. There are so many subtle ways to screw things up without having experience and still you just hit it out of the park. The production values for everything are just so nice too. I definitely look forward to your future work.by billyzelsnack - General

Have you seen the work the brushless gimbal crowd has been doing lately? I'm extra lazy today so I'll just copy/paste my post from another forum. ------- I think the recent brushless motor based camera gimbal developments in the quadcopter community are going to be super useful for the robotics community in the near term. In the past few months quite a few low cost, large diameter, and manby billyzelsnack - Developers
Have you played around with this? You could maybe start with the derlin numbers to at least get some idea. Maybe sandwiching the gear between metal sheet could discourage delamination too.by billyzelsnack - General
None. Low cost 3D printers are not ready for the mainstream. Wait another year.by billyzelsnack - General
I built a direct drive setup back in January. What I found out from the experiment was that resolution was probably fine for my direct drive setup, but as I increased the speed my poor little motors just did not have the torque to hold the position with all the back forth movements required to rasterize a straight line. Here is what happens when I go faster. Here is what the crazy rasterizaby billyzelsnack - Polar Machines, SCARA, Robot Arms
