I'm really looking forward to hearing more about this printer. I like what I've seen of the design so far, and it does seem to be uniquely rigid and robust compared to the other commercial offerings out there. It is really impressive that you are using stainless steel for the blocks; it does seem like overkill, but like you say, sometimes that is underrated.
The prospect of a $49 extruder is a

madscifi, you make a very interesting point about 3.2 and what it means about uploading another person's design. It really does sound like anything released under an attribution or non-commercial license could not be uploaded to Thingiverse, except by the original creator. This seems to rule out the practice I've sometimes seen of someone reposting a thing that was deleted by the original owner

Personally I would go with stainless because rust is a major concern where I live. In fact I think the smooth rods on my RapMan are starting to rust. Apparently they aren't stainless.
Of course, like you said, you can avoid rust with proper maintenance. But I am not one to maintain things very well . And I really do hate rust, so in this case the other factors are minor in comparison. I wis

Just came across this video and transcript of a homemade granule extruder:
The builder is using it for making HDPE strips for aquaponics growing media, but to quote the first comment on that page: "You should turn the plastic into a filament so you can use on a 3D printer like a RepRap or MakerBot. "
It seems like it would only require replacing the die.
I really don't know much about granul

Just wanted to mention that a maker space / hackerspace is coming together on Maui, called Maui Makers:
Jerry Isdale is the founder and he has a Makerbot (among other cool things).
So if you are on Maui, maybe check them out!

Wooo! Go Hawaii RepRap User Group! I was wondering how long it would be until one popped up .
Thank you Terry for starting one!
I have been operating a RapMan 3.0 since the beginning of the year. I live on Maui and mostly use Alibre for design. I mostly print things from Thingiverse and I have a few of my own models on there.
It is great to hear that you are getting your son and his school

I agree with you about the thermistor wires, I must have broken them 2 or 3 times during assembly. I ended up with an ugly looking hot end, but I'm happy as long as it works.
BfB does sell preassembled hot ends here:
(There is a drop down menu). Cost is 80 GBP (plus shipping I imagine), but it might just be worth it to save yourself the trouble.

I saw this on their forum :
"As for the plastic cost, it is $22.5/lb, and you need to buy from us, our ABS is different from RepRap. We have no other costs except for the cost of the machine, ABS material, and shipping. "
It would be interesting to find out how their ABS is different; maybe it is better for printing, somehow. That price is quite a bit higher than what can be bought in the US t

jeremyl,
It is possible to greatly reduce the PLA drooling using a stepper motor driven extruder that reverses at the end of a line segment and then advances at the start of the next. The bitsfrombytes RapMan extruder and firmware does a good job of this, for example. Drooling of PLA is still an issue at the start of a print while the extruder heats up.
The issue with the hose that the fila

Gene Hacker,
Skeinforge does have a setting called Fillet to deal with the acceleration around corners by rounding them slightly:
It is on by default (at least in the version I am using) and I haven't played with any of the settings, so I have no idea how much it actually helps. But I haven't tried printing at higher speeds either.
nophead,
What if the larger extruder squashed the filament,
