To achieve a super smooth finish, just go buy some IPS Weld-on 4 and dip the part in it. 30 seconds will not affect surface detail, and longer will give the part a more glossy finish. Smoothing ABS parts is extremely easy. Just dip them in IPS Weld-On 4 for about 30 seconds (or more) depending on the desire of smoothness. Then hang the part and let it dry overnight. I am certainly no expert, but I think your first idea has already been done. It is called polymer thermojet, and I admit that ZCorp's Z450/Z510/Z650 are some a rather impressive machines. Also, don't forget the Open3DP project, but they are still in the process of creating an open inkjet printer.
