Having just acquired a BeagleBone, I'm really interested in finding the best way to drive my Mendel90 with it. What bobc is working on looks almost ideal to me: http://reprap.org/wiki/RAMPS-FD , but obviously it's for the Arduino Due only For BeagleBone alternatives are: BeBoPr : ~ £100, a year old. Works with BB, but needs a bridge to work with BB Black Replicape : Not being produced yet. Woby marcosscriven - RAMPS Electronics
I have some more time to work on FabFabbers, if anyone finds it useful? http://www.fabfabbers.com/by marcosscriven - General
I seem to be fine printing directly onto glass (with a heatbed), although I do have to make sure it's absolutely clean and grease free (usu. just wipe it with some kind of solvent before each print)by marcosscriven - General
bobc Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- I had thought of adapting > RAMPS shield for BBB, but with Replicape being > available soon there may not be much point. From what I gather, the Replicape will be at least twice the cost of RAMPS, so actually adapting the latter may be a good idea. The BBB works on 3.3v levels though, and as far as I know the Arduino shielby marcosscriven - Controllers
It's most definitely possible to control a stepper driver with the PRUs. Take a look here: https://bitbucket.org/intelligentagent/replicape/src/2143a25b0537e6959e674441add9ee7866278049/firmware/firmware_00A3.p?at=master In just the same way as the AVR MCUs can output step/direction to GPIOs, so too can the PRUs. EDIT: Just found another BeagleBone project that does this: https://github.com/moby marcosscriven - Controllers
I have a Mendel90 which came in a kit with the Melzi board (Marlin firmware), which works great (in terms of quality of print etc) There's two things that bug me though: 1) The slowness of uploading to the SD card (which I always do as printing directly from a computer, be it a laptop or a Raspberry Pi, always has the risk of interruptions) 2) Monitoring the printer remotely (again, can cause pby marcosscriven - Controllers
Ah that makes sense - cheap way to do it I guess!by marcosscriven - Controllers
What's the 'component' connecting MS1 and MS2 on the stepper drivers? http://reprap.org/mediawiki/images/7/7d/Melzi-circuit.png Looking at the physical board, it just looks like two copper pads, connected to each other. From the spec sheet, this appears to just be to select the step size.by marcosscriven - Controllers
Can definitely second the Mendel90 : http://marcos.scriven.org/2012/12/building-mendel90.html Speedsoda Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Okay, so mendelmax seems like a reliable choice. > Can anyone give me any insight on Ralph Hiltons > post above? I used a Melzi + Raspberry Pi combo too. However, I do like the look of the Beaglebone Black (BB, with a Replicape (the latter not available yet). What's cool about the BBB is the SoC also contains two 200MHz microcontrollers (which they call Programmable Realtime Units). That means you can run stepper drivers withough worrying about OS interrupts.by marcosscriven - General
Depends what you're aiming for: 1) Networking - a cheaper alternative would be raspberry pi 2) Slicing - unless you write your own slicer specifically to take advantage of the Parallella Epiphany co-processor, it's going to be a lot slower than your laptop/desktop 3) Re stepper drivers - generally the reason for RAMPS etc is that driving the motors must be real-time. A Parallella board (being juby marcosscriven - General
There was quite a five minute piece on BBC News (and BBC breakfast news) on 3D printing. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23499822 Nothing new of course, but I suppose continuing public profile is a good thing.by marcosscriven - General
Where are you based in the world? I have a spare one you can have.by marcosscriven - Mendel90
I can see why you might refrain from advising that in the manual! Ah, it's never quite the same as your first 3D printer Take a look here if you'd like to compare build notes: Chris's printer and associated documentation really is second to none IMO.by marcosscriven - Mendel90
I see, so it's not the fact it's polygonal that's the issue (rather than splines or whatever), but that all facets are split into triangles?by marcosscriven - General
I don't use Solidworks - but I found this : Would that work? What are the issues with creating a solid from an STL (as long as it doesn't have any degeneracies or self intersections)?by marcosscriven - General
Some really good content in there! Not that I'm an expert, but perhaps the layout could do with being a little more uniform?by marcosscriven - General

Hi Just wondering if anyone here is a RepRapper/maker in Sydney? I'm looking into the possibility of working in Sydney (as a UK citizen), ideally on my site FabFabbers.com, but potentially for a company. So far as I can tell, the best way to a visa is sponsorship, so wondered if anyone can recommend companies to approach in this field (3D printing, or software in general) Thanks Marcosby marcosscriven - General

Hi Gerard & Jasper Thanks for all the suggestions - I think at the moment my best bet is some sort of crowfunding, but just thinking about the parameters of that. Marcosby marcosscriven - General
Perhaps an aside to the question of sub-forums, but regarding the actual topic, I'd love to know how 'mainstream' reprap actually is. Does anyone have numbers at all?by marcosscriven - General
Hi What are the reasons you don't want a kit form? If its because you don't have time, then I completely understand. If it's because you're worried you can't do it, then I recommend you reevaluate. The Mendel90 kit from Nophead comes with everything you need, and a clear manual that has improved further with feedback. Personally I think the best bit about putting together yourself is you realby marcosscriven - General

I can highly recommend Nophead's Mendel90. Best bit is, you'd have £1500 change! I wrote up my experience here http://marcos.scriven.org/2012/12/building-mendel90.htmlby marcosscriven - General
