Thanks for your thoughts guys. Sorry for not seeing your replies earlier - I was distracted from my original 'next build' plan by hacking the Mendel90 design for the last few months for myself and a friend; I've lost count of the number of times I've fallen in and out of love with OpenSCAD. I little off-topic but related nonetheless, I found out from a UK sales engineer that THK now have a costby hairykiwi - General New Machines Topics
Thanks Nicholas. I follow RichRap pretty closely and even had a good look over his Sli3DR design at the TCT show last year - very nice - and super quality output. I won't rule out building a Sli3DR, but I'm still interested in better understanding the pros and cons of the MarkForged belting configuration. Speaking of RichRap's machines - does anyone know the name of this (pure Cartesian) one sby hairykiwi - General New Machines Topics
Hi everyone, It's time to upgrade my faithful Prusa Mendel with something more rigid and capable of producing larger objects; something in the order of 200 x 400 x 300mm (xyz). After some research, I was settling on designing and building a CoreXY machine - until I saw the configuration of the xy axes in the MarkForged Mark One, in this promo video by Onshape. Here's a screen capture from thatby hairykiwi - General New Machines Topics
Elmi, I don't have specific advice, only the two following documents I found while researching my next machine to build. Maybe they'll give you some deeper insight. www.inspire.ethz.ch ~ MODELING AND MEASUREMENT OF H-BOT KINEMATIC SYSTEMS multimechatronics.com ~ H-Bot Web Site Slides 205-11-2011.pdfby hairykiwi - CoreXY Machines
Great stuff Stewart - the pictures are really nice and clear. I really should get along to a Maker Faire. The 2011 Newcastle Maker Faire looked like a really good weekend. If anyone is interested in going this year - Maker Faire UK 2013 is 27 - 28 April. More info here: makerfaireuk.com. Nick - Thanks, I'll give you a PM in the next few weeks. Rob - Any dates yet? Well done on your Mendel90 Mike! I really like the simplicity of nophead's design. Nick, sounds like you're doing some interesting stuff. Is it a CNC EDM you're building? Must visit your workshop sometime - if you don't mind. On a related theme, I recently discovered The Concrete Lathe Project - based on the rediscovered designs for WWI lathes - http://blog.makezine.com/2012/04/12/the-concrete-lby hairykiwi - West of England RUG
Nice to hear from you Rob! Well done with the new printer design - looks like it's progressing well. I've been pretty busy with work for the last couple of months. Project-wise, I'm almost at the point I have something worth releasing / prototyping for my open source watch project. bit.ly/mtmpublic bit.ly/mtmsneakypeek If you ever need anything printed - I know it's not as convenient as doingby hairykiwi - West of England RUG
Apologies for the silence from my end of late. Unfortunately the 24th is out for me due work commitments. I should be back into a more stable work pattern by the new year. Stewart, have you thought about advertising in your local newspaper's online what's-on guide? It usually free advertising for community events such as ours. Any news on a date for Swindon? October is starting to fill up - I've just discovered the 3D printing show taking place in London 19 - 21 Oct. The 19th is a trade day, 20th and 21st are public days: 3dprintshow.com Cheers, Hamishby hairykiwi - West of England RUG
Hi jibajabaa, You're more than welcome to join us at any of the South West meet ups, but possibly the Manchester area might be your best bet for finding the nearest RUG. I suspect nophead (hydraraptor.blogspot.com) might have a good idea of what's going on up your way. You could try PM'ing him. He might even be able to print you some Prusa parts. Though his printers may be tied up printing partsby hairykiwi - West of England RUG
Hi suneil and jibajabaa, Welcome along - and great to hear from you again Suneil. If you guys want to host an event as big or as small as you like - I'd suggest diving in and publishing a date. To give you some idea, in the last year we've had meetings in peoples houses with 4 - 8 people, a business premises, café, Scout hall, and the Newport Model Engineering Society. Sounds very interesting Nick! Look forward to hearing/seeing more. I've just finished changing/recalibrating from an Arcol V3 to a J-head IV-B (Many thanks to Rob for selling me his spare hotend and sorting out a new compatible extruder body.) It sure lives up to all the good things said about it I also updated all my firmware and started using Marlin's (autotuned) PID temp control - great oby hairykiwi - West of England RUG
Sorry September is really busy for me. Mid to late October would suit better. Cheers, Hamishby hairykiwi - West of England RUG
Paul, Many thanks for organising yesterday's event, to your wife for preparing the great feast - and special thanks to the Newport Model Engineering Society for hosting us. Many thank's for the invite to return too! Being as central as it is to the Southwest RUG region - and with such easy access just off the motorway, I'm definitely keen to meet in Newport on a semi-regular basis. Hi again Mortimer, That 'little bit of chewing' is enough to throw the calibration process out the window. Been there, done that The two springs on my Greg's accessible Wade are almost fully compressed for reliable operation: 8mm OD, 19 - 20 mm uncompressed / 13mm working compression. More compression (for PLA) is better, generally speaking. Rich will have more precise info for sure - and possby hairykiwi - West of England RUG
Hi Mortimer, I can't spend too long helping right this moment, sorry, but we'll get started... Even if I'm not about to answer your reply to this, it should help someone else help you. Is the knurled bolt clean after extruding some material, or is it chewing your filament and getting clogged? Which extruder body are you using? They generally all work fine, but 'Greg's accessible Wade' is easieby hairykiwi - West of England RUG
Good to hear you're on the right track re z-couplers Brian. It appears that people suffer various teething problems with z-couplers of any printed design - one of my nophead ones dropped off a few days after first assembly, but after degreasing all associated metal and plastic (with ipa or similar), they've both remained in place ever since, (6 months+) and that's with the original PVC tube as sby hairykiwi - West of England RUG
Good to see you had a great turnout in Exeter! Apologies for having to bale out on the morning - but I look forward to joining in some other baking day. Brian - FWIW, are you aware Maplin do mail order? Also, I'd suggest you work towards eliminating the Z-axis wobble than accommodating it with a coupler. It took me some time - by running the Z-axis motors + threaded rods, in situ, but WITHOUTby hairykiwi - West of England RUG
Many thanks indeed Rich - for the fine location and fine food! (The seconds went down especially well.) It's great to see everyone progressing so well - even if that progress at an individual level seems to take so long at times. When I attended our first event in Bristol last year, I just wanted to get my Prusa working nicely. G'day Mac! Welcome to the thread. As you'll read above, RichRap is organising the next event this Saturday 14th July in Stroud from 11am until late. Anyone interested in joining us - 12 or so at last count - will need to PM him for address details. Look forward to meeting you Sat if you can make it, otherwise the next events are: Exeter - Sat 28th July Newport - Sun 26th August Also, you areby hairykiwi - West of England RUG
Hi Stewart - good to see your business developing - must be very exciting seeing things come together. Personally, I'm in favour of all relevant businesses advertising as you just have. All the best with your endeavour, Hamishby hairykiwi - West of England RUG
Good to hear from you Max! Sounds very promising - and there must be some RepRap activity going on in and around Bristol. Speaking of which, where in the world is BigDoug? - Hamishby hairykiwi - West of England RUG

Hi Nick and all, It was a pleasure! FYI: I bought my 1 l bottle of acetone from Shiny Hardware Limited I hope I'm a little more productive next get together - c'est la vie - such is RepRap life. I did already mention the 14th July to Rich - so it shouldn't be too long before he confirms. Look forward to seeing you all agin next month! Below is the scene from earlier today. Hi Stewart, That's the only day in July I can't do - but don't let that stop you, especially if it's a good date for everyone else. No doubt there's plenty of local machines/interest anyway. You might want to PM the guys down Devon way in case they miss your post. Last time I looked they were lurking in another thread on this WoE forum. Hamishby hairykiwi - West of England RUG
