Nah, My Saturday is already booked. Maybe next time, or maybe I'll have one at my place (bring stuff for the router) when I get back. Thanks though!

I mentioned that I wasn't a big makerslide fan earlier. I wanted to post the alternative I was suggesting: and These kinds of bearings are stiff and strong, and cheap. I also trust them more in off axis misalignment than the makerslide, which may be able to derail under high off axis loads. Top down load on the LRR20 is around 400lbs per block! Side load is ~ half that.

Damn, my follow topic didn't take, or I would have been voting for the library too :| I cannot afford to go near the CC beer store, as I always rack up the visa when I go in there! We all still on for tonight at Central City? I may hike down to the library first to take some photos of the meeting rooms if so. Cheers; - Derek

I would place a vote for the library location. I would love to see some actual machines.

I'll be there, and may be carpooling with Wallester unless he wants to leave super early to get to SMI before it closes. Sublime; I'll be leaving 6-630 ish, so if you wanted to jump in my car too, that would be fine. - Derek

Hey all, sorry for the delay. I got held up with work stuff and forgot to follow up here. Long story short, the hair straighteners no worky in the long term, as the nichrome eventually burnt out from the temperature cycling. What doesn't burn out, however, is an even cheaper $19.99 black and decker clothes iron. Mind you I had to use a solid state relay to switch it, but it does work really well

Either is good. Perhaps we should carpool from Abby?

Correction; the elements only worked for a day or so per set, then burned out. The nichrome is amazingly thin and weak, and temperature cycling it killed it in a few hours. Don't use ceramic heaters from hair straighteners, go buy a $20 Black and Decker iron instead, which is working awesome with 16 hours of solid on/off and printing (longer term reliability to follow).

Sublime pointed this post out to me, and I decided to give it a go. Milled a aluminum mounting plate up that allowed me to screw the two heater elements from a $25 crappy walmart hair straightener. How they price those so cheap with 2 ceramic heating elements is beyond me. When I was tearing down the existing control board, I found two extra leads on one of the elements.... hmmmm...... measured

Hey Brad; another followup on the heated bed; Your suggestion for ceramic hair straightener elements is working AMAZINGLY well. The ceramic heaters magically converge on the 120C temperature.... once I hooked them to the new aluminum bed I milled last night There are really only two usable settings on the thermostat, either 65-70C or 120-125C flat out. It seems to oscillate a bit in between. Ge

Just a followup. We had a really food meetup, with lots of interesting reprappers (is that a word now)? I learned a ton there, and we're going to have more meetings in the future, probably monthly!

Just pinging the local forum again. Great meeting all of you! Oh, and Sublime, you were right about the ceramic elements in the hair straighteners. There is a fancy temperature controlled element in there that is _perfect_, so I machined up an aluminum bed and will be testing it as soon as I get some new #4 countersunk screws to mount it.

Welp, My reprap kit/vitamins showed up, and went together in a couple of hours, not including electronics. I am still building the wiring harness, but the sprinter firmware seems pretty awesome on X/Y and extruder so far. This has been a lot easier so far than my gantry CNC for sure! Fastenal has all the metal parts you need btw. Mostly just pinging the group to keep it active. Anybody have a pr

I'd be into buying some plastic Sublime! I go through a ton of materials on my CNC already, so I am living in fear of how much the 3d printer is going to cost.

Adding myself; also in Abbotsford. Should note; Wade of wadestruder fame is in Vancouver, as are a ton of reprappers at the VCL (vancouver community labs), and some makerbot folks at the Vancouver Hackerspace.
