So far, the problem seems to be the cheap filament I got from Magic Cube on Amazon. I had been using their material for some time and got quite good results from the yellow and red. This roll is blue and when I switched to some Inland brand I got from Microcenter, the problem is gone. It still clunks on the first layer, but I usually set the first layer pretty close to make sure it sticks. So

Hi Guys,
I've been trying to figure out why my extruder keeps stopping, and am wondering if the motor has failed. Do they do that? I've been printing regularly for about a year
I'm using Airtriper's Bowden extruder and about 3/4 through a sizable print, it will make a clunking noise - about once a second or so and no filament moves. If I pull the bowden tube out of the extruder end, it will

It is probably a hole in the STL that the slicer patches up and therefor creates a solid layer.
Run the STL through Netfab and see if the problem is gone afterwards.
That was the answer. Thank you!!

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I tried three other layer heights; .08 .1 and .15. All three display the wall when I slide through the layers in Proterface.
Other thoughts?

I have an item I made in Sketchup from something i downloaded; I modified some of the shape. Anyway, there is a square hole through that looks correct in Sketchup and in Cura. This hole, by the way, was in the original item and it printed correctly. In Cura, my new part looks like this
When i print it, the square hole has a wall about half-way through:
In Pronterface, I can see the wall

Could you measure the fiaments diameter? Perhaps the diameter changed. Sometimes (even on the same roll!) the diameter changes.
Anyhow: Glad you got it fixed!
Thanks Ano,
I did check the diameter along the way and it was within 0.04 mm of before it went haywire. I was thinking maybe the thermistor had changed value and the extruder was running a lot hotter than it was before. Only

Finally hit on a fix for my problem. I may sound kinda dense, but it was temperature. I've been printing for a year with these temp settings, but not anymore. Changed from 217 to 190 and prints are clean and sharp again. No idea why that would change between one day and the next, but there ya go.
A learning experience

So, am back to troubleshooting this.
FWIW, I reloaded the firmware about three posts back.
Last time I turned on the printer (which left me too frustrated to do any more for a while - had to just walk away), I rebooted the computer and reloaded the EXACT same g-code file for the two gears into Pronterface and hit print. Here is the result:
I just don't get it. w. t. f. happened?

There are still many possibilities like:
- More moisture in the filament now than before, more steam causing more ooze?
- Different filament than before?
- Something else unknown?
So you may need to do a hollow calibration pyramid to check that retraction is enough. Have to check the basics.
Same filament, same RH in the shop for the last several months (I live in the 'high

Printer has not been moved more than a few inches on my workbench for the last 6 months or so. The workbench is in my basement shop that does not vary from 15 - 18C and around 20% humidity.

So, I went ahead and let the print run after confirming that it is retracting before moving to the other gear. When it was done, I was amazed to realize that the extraneous material between the gears is exactly the same both times. Even the flaws in the gear spokes are the same. That can't be ooze, or some similar problem, because that would be random, wouldn't it? Could this be some kind of

I restarted the two-gears g-code and held gently on the filament where it enters the extruder. On the move between the large and small gear, I felt the filament retract several mm, so I would guess that is working. Also, it is creating the string/wall between the gears as seen in the first picture.

that's what's weird. I'm not kidding, it is same roll of filament, same g-code. Nothing has changed except the output.

Didn't change a thing. This is the same g-code file that worked perfectly a few weeks ago. Now everything I try to print comes out like this.

Hi,
I have been printing lots of useful things. Suddenly, the prints have stuff strung between the parts
A few weeks ago, I created g-code and printed a perfect pair of gears. Today, this same g-code file does this:
Another print came out like this:
Any ideas what this is all about?
Thanks!

MOSFET wasn't the problem. one of the wires from the bed thermistor broke and the board was reading zero. Found it when I changed out Q3 and it worked...for a bit. Then quit again. no LED, no heat. I happened this time to notice the zero in pronterface in the B: reading and put my meter on the plug end; it read open. I traced it about 6 inches to a break inside the insulation. After I spli

that would make sense, then. I hadn't seen the schematic. Now that I looked it up, I see what you're saying. I'll change out the MOSFET and see if that fixes my problem.
Thanks for your info!

would that disable the red LED on the board? I would think that would come on regardless of status of the MOSFET

My printer has been running flawlessly for a while now, but today the bed won't heat up. The red LED on the RAMPS (1.4) board doesn't come on when I click the bed-heat button in Pronterface, or if I manually send M190 S65 through the 'send' box in Pronterface.
Can someone here help me with how to troubleshoot this?
Thanks!

Okay, so it turns out that all four Pololus were blown. I had a spare RAMPS and Pololus, and got nothing out of swapping out the RAMPS, but swapped out all the drivers and everything moves now.
Sure would like to know wtf I did to blow the Arduino and all the drivers

I believe power is okay, I am using the 12v-Aux right next to the X axis driver module to run some fans which do work. Would there likely be something on the RAMPS blown? Seems odd that everything except the motors work.

Hoping someone here knows what I screwed up.
In mid homing of Z axis, I bumped the RAMPs/Mega board and Z just stopped. After that I couldn't get Pronterface or Arduino to connect to the board. When I plugged the USB cable in, no "happy sound" from my PC either, although the "on" light came on.
Next I took all the cables off and removed the RAMPS and tried to connect the Mega by itself; same t

I don't know if I should start a new thread or attempt to hijack this one.
Anyway, I have a problem with my heated bed. I believe it is drawing to much current from my PSU. After running it for a bit, I saw some "magic smoke" appear from behind the printer. I pulled the plug and saw that one of the PSU plugs had melted. I felt the wires and they were very hot (the wires going to H

So, I built a Prusa i3 and am in the testing phase.
I double and triple checked the wiring and got all motors working correctly. Time to test the heaters. So, with Pronterface, I set the nozzle to 185C and the bed to 65C. They both began a nice rise in temp and the nozzle settled in around 178, but the bed raced on up to 75. That is when I turned around to face the printer and saw a thick plum

Hi Everyone,
I had a coworker who is clued out about 3D printing ask "so what does one do with a 3D printer? What do you print?"
Well, I know what I do, but it struck me as a pretty good question. So, I'd like to pose it to the community here. How would you answer
"whadaya do with a 3D printer?"
Looking forward to hearing

HI All,
Wanted to say thanks to everyone who posted suggestions. I did get the problem worked out and can post a picture later on. I'm using Cura for slicing and it does not have separate control for top layers. So, I put the top/bottom layer setting at 1.0mm and increased the flow percentage and now the top surfaces look pretty good.
Thanks again!
