You really need a fan to improve the PLA prints. Not sure which slicer you are using but make sure cooling is turned on. Also may want to reduce the temp slightly. You did not give the specs on the heatbed, but 60 degrees and PVA works well.
Also above only works if calibration is correct. Need to verify e-steps and also double check all the axis.
Z starting height is also important. If

Lately I have been using Kisslicer. Quality of the prints is what pushed me over the edge. Slic3r is a close second but I have not been able to match the quality of Kisslicer.
Tried SKeinforge a couple times but just way too complicated to start out with.

Try dropping to .3 or .25 on layer height. .4 with .5 nozzle is pretty tall.
You may also be able to lower the bed temp slightly.

I placed my thermistor on the bottom of the PCB about 1/2 way towards the center. Epoxied in place with hi temp epoxy.
Underside I also has a layer of insulation. I have not checked my actual glass temps but have not had much trouble printing abs or pla.

Do you have any pictures of the results?
That makes it easier to see what is going on.
May also want to try Slic3r or Kisslicer, settings are a little easier out of the box.

What layer heights and nozzle size?

Sounds like you are trying to print directly from a PC.
I have had mixed success with that. I can get away with it for short prints but never trust it for long prints.
SD card will solve the vast majority of the problem, but I have had SD card stop a couple times.

Make sure you have all the wires intact to the motor.
I had the same symptoms when one of my wires broke.

Sounds like your slicer is not positioning print correctly or "home" is not in the correct spot relative to your slicing software.
Most of the time home is bottom or front left corner. (Print head in this position).
By default endstops only function during home, so after homing you can hit them and not get the machine to stop. SKipped steps will also render the software endstops usless.

What he ^^^^ said. Works great.

I typically run 110 on my Kapton covered bed. Also make sure no air from anywhere is blowing on the bed while printing abs. Needs to remain hot at all times.
Also to improve sticking to the Kapton I scuff it up some with sandpaper.
Also if using Slic3r on some hard to print parts I would enable the brim which prints 1 layer around the perimeter of the actual part allowing better adhesion to

Here is the stack I have been running for several weeks on my mendelmax running 110-115 without any issues.
Lower plate Lexan bolted to Y carriage.
PCB bolted with risers to Lexan just enough space for 1 thickness cardboard wrapped in aluminum foil.
Glass plate clipped to PCB
No springs anywhere tried that for a short period and found out how bad it was.
Have not had to level my bed since ass

Look for this section in configuration.h. Un-comment your setup.
//LCD and SD support
//#define ULTRA_LCD //general lcd support, also 16x2
//#define SDSUPPORT // Enable SD Card Support in Hardware Console
//#define ULTIMAKERCONTROLLER //as available from the ultimaker online store.
//#define ULTIPANEL //the ultipanel as on thingiverse

Sounds like you are missing steps while printing. Check your stepper voltages . Might need to turn them up slightly.
Or you have a pulley slipping on the stepper.

Look in configuration_adv,h. In the mechanical settings section.
Comment out this line if you want to use the end stops at other times, although I heard this adds potential other issues.
#define ENDSTOPS_ONLY_FOR_HOMING // If defined the endstops will only be used for homing

I assume this is when you are manually feeding during calibration?
Check you r extruder speed and slow it down. Also extrude in 5-10mm amounts until you reach the desired 100mm.

How do you have your homing setup in firmware? Configuration.h
Below are my settings on my MM 1.5 with std 8mm screws and 20 tooth GT2 pulleys., mechanical end stops without resistors.

I seemed to have solve my garbage on the display problem. 10 hour print and started another without any issues. Yea!
My solution.
1. Use the short cables ~ 12"
2. Make sure end plugged into ramps ihsaa cables exiting away from board.
3. Make sure no other wires are near the ribbon cables.
Definitely root cause is noise and shielded cables may be the best solution.
Update. 4-5 hours into

I have been having this problem a lot lately. Same symptoms and removing and inserting SD card will clear it sometimes but cannot do this while printing.
I had a longer cable attached and it was really bad. Went back to the shorter version and better but can never finish a print with display remaining readable.
What type of shielded cables are you guys running? Where is the shield ground bei

Check page 85 and see if it helps.
Looks like from the pictures your hot end will fit into the extruder and bolts will go thru the carriage, extruder and hot end wood plate.

PLA printing with Elmers (PVA) glue mixed 4 parts water 1 part glue. Works great with bed at 60C. Wipe occasionally with Windex lightly. Eventually a full clean and recoat but goes for a long time.

I tried Kisslicer again., took me a little bit to understand the settings. After that a nice clean slice. So easy.....
If the first couple mm of printing are an indication of the quality difference. Wow, huge difference in print quality. I printed a part with Slic3r earlier almost identical speeds etc... And the quality was not that great, different part so I may reprint with a Kisslicer

I was able to get a good slice with ReplicatorG which was using SF. So now lets see if I can get a version usable on my printer in standalone SF.

Did you ever have luck getting this to slice correctly? Been working on the same gear myself. Works great at the .25 tolerance via customized but any lower and slic3r takes the shortcuts. Tried many variations all with the same results. I also tried SF but it looked really bad and I am not familiar enough with all the setting to know how to make it better.
I did print one set at .25 tolerance

Are you using any . (dots) in your print profiles? I have had issues updating those and have since renamed all the bad ones.
You can manually edit the config file and change the skirt if all else fails.

Printing via USB and PC has been just as you describe above. Hangs for no apparent reason.
Printing form SD card has worked great. I have only had 2 issues with a print stopping from SD card. First was a wire on my extruder stepper breaking and the other was when I ejected the card while printing.

I also found another problem when commissioning my new printer. The steps per mm was not correct by the calculations. I switched to a set of herringbone and was checking the numbers, they were off on my old printer.
New printer is doing great with correct numbers, my X & Y was also a little.
