What height:width ratio are you running (or are you allowing Slic3r to decide?) ?

Thanks for your mature response Dark Alchemist - about what I would expect from your other posts. Strangely those who want to search aren't the spoon fed babies as they don't have to ask for help each time if the question has been previously raised / solved. Yes I appreciate it's free and I appreciate that I can just decide to go elsewhere as we all can... ofc if that happens then the critical ma

Pity really, if Reprap people spent a bit more time sticking their head over the parapet they might find there is a lot of useful stuff going on out there, instead of endlessly rehashing Mendel etc. Reprap development is pretty stagnant
I have to agree here, one of the issues is that there is an inbuilt assumption that everyone wants the same thing from their printer, another is tha

I think it says it all about this forum that the "decision" was taken on irc not on the forum and not even communicated on the forum. Server speed is not the only issue here, there is a need for reorganisation and improved admin (this isn't a complaint at the existing admin - I appreciate the size of the task and the barriers), but it does appear that some key people are unwilling to cede power t

Pazu in your photo it looks as if the (pink/purple) filament is unconstrained between the extruder and the hot end - is that the case or have you just separated them for the photo?

"nozzle hitting edges of parts hard as it travels around between parts and islands of the same part... "
I used to have this issue as well but don't seem to suffer now, the two things I changed in the interim (I know I should have only changed one then I'd know what really caused the problem!) were:
Cooling : I have two fans blowing on the print from North and South and I slightly reduced bed t

I agree I think this would be really useful - I've found a few items that I've tried to print and either had to run with a large number of perimeters throughout or cut and paste two lots of g-code for the difficult sloping bits.

I got that error (albeit in a different version) . After lots of searching around I realised that I'd changed my settings and replaced a zero in one with a blank

Thanks for thoses values James, I'll try playing with my settings see if it has an effect. Is jerk setting for E important as well?

Until today I'd followed Richrap's advice that Slic3r's automatic width calculation was fine to use. I'd been meaning to test some different ratio's to see what effect they had but had never got around to it. Slic3r calculated a 0.58mm width for my 0.4 mm J-Head with a 0.21mm layer height. Moving to a 0.4mm width (1.905 ratio) had a much bigger impact than I had imagined, especially on items like

I'd have thought you would have to print in parallel otherwise you're risking head crashes on the first part while printing the second (unless you remove it from the bed ofc in which case you might as well load the second file while you're waiting for bed to cool to remove the first) ...or have I misunderstood what you're trying to do?

I'd side with Bobc on this, whilst I have no problem sitting beside my printer whilst it's chugging away I wouldn't want to risk either self guilt or potential recriminations if something happened to your unborn child (despite the fact that it would probably be completely unrelated). Stick the printer in the garage and print from there for 9 mths, make sure your wife know the sacrifice you are ma

I use silicon tubing on both the thermistor leads and the resistor leads. Beyond the soldered joints at the end of the original leads I just use normal heat shrink.

I have a similar situation front to back on my printer and I'm fairly certain it's a cooling issue. My cooling is provided by a computer fan clamped to a dining room chair in front of the printer (yeah, I know it was only meant to be temporary ...... at least I've moved on from having a second chair with a pool of filament clamped to it!) I get good quality at the front but on complicated prints

Printing
I had this problem initially (stiill do with abs which is why I'm printing in pla atm). For PLA i found some advice which recommended compressing the extruder springs so tight that the extruder motor stalls and then backing off, and this has worked for me (one thing to watch out for is having your nozzle too close to your bed which makes it almost impossible to extrude anything and causes the fil

Surely the second design has a lower surface area for heat transfer as the radius decreases along the length. Whilst the surface area to volume ratio is imroved in the second design I'm not convinced this is the important parameter as the residence time in the smaller volume will be shorter (assuming the same volumetric flow of plastic) but I'd be interested in knowing for sure as I'm thinking of

Shiny vs Dull ....what's the significance of this? I've noticed some parts of my (PLA) prints can appear duller as well and would be interested in knowing why / whether I can do anything about it?

Nice design Detlef, it's given me a lot to think about. I've come to the conclusion that the faff of trying to clean a hot end out between plastics is too great and probably won't help extend the life of the hotend either.
Going back to the extruder itself I find that my wade's works much better with PLA with a tapped hobbed bolt (rather than a dremelled hobbed bolt) but the tapped bolt seems to

Just wondering if on the tower and cube print it is too high a travel speed /acceleration causing you to get misalignment which then disappears further up the tower as you stop having any travel moves?

Is there a best practice when you're changing materials on a printer (other than using a completely separate extruder and hotend for each!)?
How to get rid of all previous material (and what temperature to do this at)?
When to introduce new material?
Do you need to check bed height etc again as you're working at different heater and bed temps?
etc etc
