No firmware setting then?
I tested the board, it is indeed 10k....
Ralph, comes up with approx 8.8k not 82k.... but thanks for putting me on the right track

Temperatures would always report as acceptable (ie 20 degree cold) but I had to replace the original Melzi board in the winter.
Now the cold temp is about 46 degrees for both thermistors.
Using an E3D hotend now too, and neildarlow's firmware....
I just bumped up the temperatures for printing (since the bed was too cold for decent adhesion) so I'm still printing ok but I should get to the bott

New board arrived, swapped it over and now I have the x-axis back....
This is the longest bed levelling I've ever done!

"Is your X endstop permanently triggered?"
No... I checked that quite quickly....
When I try to move the bed after a reset it makes a 'click' as though it's trying to move it but it doesn't go... and the x carriage is easy to move by hand.
So weird that a failed flash would do that...
New board is ordered and shipped so I'll let you know...

Yep, clean 1.0.1 download, clean marlin download, copied the melzi folder over and uploaded it....
Works fine... except for the x-axis. So I have to conclude for some reason the board is the problem....
Lets see how I fare with one from ebay.....

When it happened I was scared the board was fried.. especially when replacing the block didn't work.... but it's fine.
It has a thousand hours of unattended prints through it...

USB.
I used a messy 1.0.1 arduino version from my dropbox thinking (mistakenly) it was my 'arduino flashing folder'... it wasn't.
I've found that it's best to get an arduino version that works and then not to mess with it... but somehow it didn't make it across to dropbox (and my PC is in storage).
So, a clean 1.0.6 (plus neils' extra folders) should be fine...
I guess I'll try a new 1.0.1 do

For future reference I had the same issue but replacing the block didn't work... I guess the trace was also burnt out, so I soldered the negative wire bundle directly to the board using the bottom left mounting hole... has worked perfectly for over a year now.

I moved my printer into storage, then down to London and then into work... it worked fine but the bed needed levelling so I did that, reflashed the board (using the wrong arduino version (1.0.1)) before getting the right version on once more (using 1.0.6).
Now the x-axis doesn't work. I swapped the X and Y axis wires into the board and the x-axis motor and wiring is fine. I was using Neils firm

Randomise each layers starting point too if you can....

I had the same problem....
Set Slic3r to be 200x200 wide and the origin to 100,100
Now in Pronterface set the X and Y offset to be -100 on each...
These are all for the latest versions (albeit on Win7)....

I made some replacement gears and it did the same, they didn't align perfectly so it had trouble turning.
Try to help turn it with your hand and/or try a few different speeds...

if you expect to get the bed .2mm level all the way across.... I think you'll be at it a looooong time.
Get a good first layer, good adhesion and start making stuff...

I saw that someone's house burnt down due to a detached thermistor.... ouch!
I'm regularly starting a print and walking away now (yes, my medel90 is THAT good!!) :p
I'll be adding this, great work Neil!

have you tried slicing it in Cura or Slic3r?
Drag the gcode into pronterface and you can see how it will print.

"the results are very good so far"
erm, it looks terrible :p
You first layer should look like a mirror (with ABS anyway) with no gaps at all.
When you level the bed you have to go around again a few times to make sure it's level all the way across, it looks to me like one corner is sticking up too much since the right side prints are better than the left.

My fan cover melted a bit too....
If you're going to print replacement gears make sure you *use* them. If they're no good then you'll be unable to print more when the orginals have a problem

add them via pronterface while printing although I advise ramping up the speed in 10% increments, sometimes go from 50% to 100% and it doesn't like it :p
You can also use this to test how fast you can print on the fly....

Don't manually press the switch, push the bed onto it to test if it's working not your finger.

On the legs?
They're probably wobbling since they're not supported, add support or slow your print speed... the M220 command is good for this so you're not waiting an age for the base to finish...
