Would like to know this as well since I bricked the SD slot on my Melzi when I had electrical problems to run the 3D printer right after building.
I have been printing with the USB cable for 6 months now wich is a shame really.

Thnx swe3tdave
I got it working now.
One little issue I have.
My motors on X and Y move normal speed.
The motors on the Z-axis move only at half speed,
Weird isnt'it?

I have located skeinforge in the /usr/share folder and pointed the path in pronterface/ external commands to this folder and it works ok now.
The interface is not that nice so I think I will try slic3r later as you have suggested.
Referring back to one of my previous posts I had allready installed pyserial.

I finally got Pronterface to open!
First I upgrade python from 2.7 to 3.2 but still didn't work.
Then I installed python-numpy and bang Pronterface opened.
Unfortunately the install is not over yet and I was hoping if somebody could help me to connect to my 3D printer.
1) I installed Skeinforge with sudo apt-get install skeinforge in terminal
Install happened without issues. However I do not kn

If your CPU doesn't have PAE you will not have the
possibility to activate this in your BIOS. I have looked into all this
before I installed this version. My laptop is from 2006 btw.

When I look in synaptic manager the Pronterface package is not present (should be before python no?)
In the File menu I choose 'Add downloaded packages' and Pronterface is there but then It will not add itself to the list of packages...

First I tried the last version of Ubuntu wich failed to install without error message.
I lost a few discs and decided to burn a new version wich told me right away about the PAE being non present.
forcepae didn't do anything so I searched and found the non-pae version 12.04
I have done an setup.py uninstall (printrun folder remains. Only /usr/lib and /usr/share files are uninstalled)

yes that's how I installed it.
I was thinking of re-installing it as it doesn't work.
Does the printrun folder has to be installed in a specific folder?

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 (non PAE) because my CPU doesn't have PAE on it.
This has python 2.7 allready installed.
I got it from github.
I extracted the package to the printrun folder and installed it in terminal with 'setup.py'
Also I installed alot of other dependencies (pyserial, pyglet, wxPython e.a

I have installed Ubuntu on another partition on my old WinXP laptop.
Repetier host doesn't work good on XP and neither it will in Linux I suspect.(I have 1GB RAM)
I'm working on a fresh install off Ubuntu and almost immediately installed pronterface.
I downloaded and installed this program in the terminal and this should work.

I wasn't exactly sure wich pronterface.py to use so I started off with the 1 in Printrun folder and then tried the Printrun/printrun wich also doesn't work.
When I try to execute the file in the Printrun folder this is what happens:

jim@Ilias:~/Printrun$ chmod 755 ./pronterface.py
jim@Ilias:~/Printrun$ ./pronterface.py

Altough I've got my Win7 running again with the Melzi, I have had no succes using the same method for my Win XP machine.
For that reason I have spended alot of time installing Ubuntu (next to XP) but still haven't managed to get Pronterface running. Luckily there is now an solution for Linux to install the drivers otherwise this would've been a big waste of time!

I have tried all the above and I think the priveliges are no longer an issue.
Now I have a new error.

I've now installed all the libraries you mentioned the program doesn't want to open.
It seems to be an problem with privileges.
I get the following error:
First I tried:

Hi,
Thnx for the reply.
Just giving an update.
I've tried to install libappindicator but ran into some errors.
There are packages wich haven't been found so I'm looking into installing those as well.
As you mentioned the glib package has to be installed as well.

I bought my Melzi in an emakershop in the EU.
As a customer it's very hard to distinguish the difference online.
I will have to do more research when buying a board online in the future.
My arduino was bought in an local electronic store.

The cause and solution for this problem have been found.
The cause might be counterfeit chips and an attempt of Microsoft and FTDI to do something about this.
Big thread going on about this issue on the Arduino forum
Somebody might have found the cause.

On page 3 of that thread there is a solution!
Click on the link there to watch the you tube video.
It is very simple and it works.
I have already uploaded my firmware and can connect again with prntrface and control the motors.

That must've been very discouraging...
I have done some reading while searching for a solution.
Apparently what is happening is not a new problem if you read this threadfrom 2012!
QuoteApparently there was a bug in the Windows USB-to-serial driver usbser.sys

@ zahmed
I also don't have the USB serial converter. Only the USB port.
I'm trying to connect on Win 7 Ultimate and XP Prof.
Both give access denied in prntrface and Win7 I get COM5 already in use in Arduino when tryung to upload firmware.
I received 2 new spools ABS today

I have the same problem since 02/10.
I am using Win7 Ultimate.
The weird thing is there is no sign of updated FTDI drivers in Windows update...
I am also using the latest FTDI drivers 2.12.00
I have uninstalled Update KB3001554 because there where people having problems with this driver but it didn't solve this issue.

Thnx for the link to the other thread Nophead.
That's exactly the problem I'm having.
Problem hasn't yet been solved by the other people but I will try and uninstall the windows update tey are talking about.
XP has also received an update a few days ago maybe it was the same one as Win 7 wich could explain why it isn't working either.

I'v read in the read me file the FTDI drivers have to be installed as well as the .NET framework 3.5 or up.
I have now managed to install the FTDI BUS driver package and it's visable in the installed programs screen. VCP driver is also installed trough connecting the printer on COM5.
In the EEPROM utility I can now select COM5 in the devices dropbox in the Flashrom TAB.

I checked eveything you mentioned.
My hotend 12V fan rotates when I switch on the printer.
USB is working as well as the cable. Also the USB ports on the XP work as they should. When I plug in the Arduino the leds light up.
Apparently the EEPROM programmer needs the FTDI drivers to be installed to be functional.
I can install the FTDI drivers but the 2 driver packages are not visible in my inst
