With regards to the seal problem I would imagine that if the main piston is moving up and drawing in the molten plastic then if there is a gap within the plastic (between it and the walls, for example) then it would simply pull in the air, rather than the plastic.
I'm a big proponent of sharing ideas, at all stages of the development process, as it usually leads to further understanding of the p

Hi,
Looking at the 2nd extruder I would be concerned about how much force is required to suck the molten plastic into the main chamber. Also, it assumes the molten plastic in the feed chambers form a complete seal. If any hole forms then the suction formed by the piston's upwards movement would be severly reduced or removed completely.
Another concern would be that the amount of material is

Hi Awais - I think the whole community would find that extremely interesting. Would you consider creating a page on the wiki?
Maybe under the category Extruders?

Hi,
Flickr doesn't appear to allow groups to force a specific license - so each uploader chooses their license, and furthermore, sadly, the default license seems to be None, i.e. All Rights Reserved, which flies in the face of the RepRap philosophy! Saying that I imagine most people will happily make them available to you if you ask, but sadly I think you will have to contact then individually.

I find it interesting that you are promoting an apparently closed-source reprap clone under the "reprap" brand.
QuoteDESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT © COPYRIGHT BY WWW.REPRAP.COM
sounds to me like it contravenes the RepRap license held by Bath University.
According to the RepRap license terms, reprap is already under copyright:

Hi Guillaume
It's an interesting idea to use a different shaped nozzle hole. Presuming your sketches are looking at the model from the side I can see how it could improve the look of layers on vertical walls, but I think you will still get "steps" between layers when there is overhang or underhang.
Regarding moving the nozzle around the hotend axis I would imaging that introducing any mechanis

Hi all,
I'm glad the post garnered so many responses. There's alot of good stuff here, and alot to think about. I will try and collate the views and ideas in a follow-up blog post.

Hi,
The openscad source files are in the github project:
Be careful which version you require - the master branch is version 2 - version 1 is in a branch called oldmaster
Otherwise, there is a plugin for Google Sketchup which allows you to import STL files (http://sketchuptips.blogspot.com/2010/03/sketchup-stl-importer-redo.html) this can then be exported as STL with the following plugin (htt

@Traumflug - You're absolutley right! To quote a comment I added to the post on exactly this:
Quote"As I was pondering alternatives I kept coming back how useful it would be to manually define internal supports to existing model files, i.e. opening an STL file in an editor and saying “ok, a strut should go here, and a joist here”, etc. I guess it can be seen as a design technique to create a mo

Hi all,
I've just written a blog post which starts to discuss whether we could create more efficient infill patterns that take advantage of the 3D nature of the models we are printing. There's a few ideas in there and perhaps it starts a discussion, or at the very least people can tell me just how bad they are and why they won't work.
Any comments or opinions would be very welcome, particularl

Hi RiC0MD,
Would you consider adding your image and description to the "The Art of 3D Print Failure" Flickr group? It certainly could be useful for others who have similar issues.

So, after a crash-course in electroplating thanks to Google and Youtube, I now know a little more
A couple of points I haven't yet been able to find out - to what extent can the plating process be layered? That is, does the newly plated part continue to act as a cathode, allowing incrementally more metal to build up? To what extent would the plate continue to be effective? Several millimet

That's quite an intriguing idea. I certainly haven't heard of anyone trying that in context of reprap.
What would the plating solution typically consist of? The wikipedia article on Electroplating says "Both components are immersed in a solution called an electrolyte containing one or more dissolved metal salts as well as other ions that permit the flow of electricity." - are these easy to

@romscraj - I love step 9.7 of the instructions! Great stuff!
Also, you make reference to the original Prusa github project for the unchanged files - I would strongly recommend linking to a definite commit or tag as the files are changing all the time. For example Prusa recently moved V1 of his Mendel to a branch (old-master, I think) and the master branch is now version 2. Otherwise it migh

Hi,
I'm not sure how you're planning on using the belts on the Z axis, but it's worth remembering that the threaded rods don't just provide movement, but also holds the X carriage in place between movements and when the Z motors are turned off. Had you thought of an arrangement that prevents the X carriage from slipping back down?

Maybe i'm behind the curve here but I didn't realise Josef was due to publish a book via Oreilly: "Getting Started with RepRap"
I didn't see a reference to it on the forum so I thought i'd share.

Hi,
I too have played around with PyPy. The resulting gcode is almost the same - there are always some rounding errors due to floating point arithmetic. (In fact I found that subsequent runs of Skeinforge itself can produce slightly different results due to this, very disconcerting but ultimately harmless at this resolution)
I found that the overhead of the PyPy JIT makes it unsuitable for sma

Hi
The source project is here: https://github.com/prusajr/PrusaMendel
Be aware that Josef released iteration 2 recently so there could be differences between the master branch and what you have. (I put up a site showing the differences between V1 and V2 here if it helps: http://garyhodgson.com/prusadiff/) You may want to refer to the old master: https://github.com/prusajr/PrusaMendel/tree/oldm

In addition to Traumflug's very helpful response...
I can't help with the implementation, but you might want to have a look on the dev list archives, a cursory search yielded this: http://reprap.org/pipermail/reprap-dev/2010-October/001592.html, and from the forums this: http://forums.reprap.org/read.php?147,82384,85269
Might be worth jumping on the dev mailing list and asking there perhaps.

That's cool that you got clarification zomie!
The speed at which the kickstarter project has already almost reached it's target, plus how well the eMaker project went, just goes to show what kind of demand there is for this kind of thing. Very impressive. I hope a lot of schools take advantage of the discount.

I don't believe they are doing anything nefarious - they probably either forgot to rewrite it or want to make it clearer in another post perhaps. I posted another comment asking them for clarification, but it's yet to appear.
I agree with progomez, they should definitely be allowed to make some money from this, and their offer for schools to get a kit at cost is really admirable. I was just a
