Could you solder a tab onto it instead of grinding a piece off? Maybe you could use a gear piece that had a drip slot, where you could drop a piece of hot solder and it would fuse to the spindle and heat up the plastic around it just enough to form a fit?

@A2 - Lamp rod is a fantastic idea.
I found this ceiling fan down rod that comes in multiple finishes and sizes. 3/4"x12", 1/2"x24", 3/4"x24"
Might be good sizes for a 1X or a 2X LISA? The thread also has a pin hole through it.

@uncle_bob - I have been thinking about polycarbonate tubes for the arm lengths instead of aluminum. Higher temperature than PVC with less sagging and good strength, light weight. I think you could use polycarbonate with a moderately heated chamber?
Or let's go in on an X-Winder and make a few dozen carbon fiber arm tubes..

Could you use threaded rods and threaded-on arm effectors to allow for easier tweaking or extending of arm lengths? Maybe two threaded rods in parallel like the bones in your forearm? Would give us something to do with all of those old Mendel Prusa rods lying around..
Something like that could make it easier to bootstrap a 1m LISA.

I have a 4' tall by 2' long/wide MDF cabinet on casters with a glass door that I have been looking for a design to build into.
Would the 3/8" screw be enough with a rigid cabinet? Or at that length, is the larger screw even more important? ~$210 vs $370?
This seems very straightforward, but it may make more sense for me to mount the steppers and electronics on the top of the cabinet for acc

Could you print a supporting threaded piece that applies slight pressure against the top/bottom plates using feet and thread tension? Maybe you could gain some stability here by having two of the legs wrap around the PVC, or drill into the PVC somehow? The arms shouldn't hit bottom, so there is some room to play with?

Maybe acrylic sheets with magnetic corner stubs could be used for simple/easy-access walls? You could include a tab at top/bottom center to secure the acrylic sheet laterally.

I was thinking that if you had the entire rod length to travel without interference, you could use some kind of conductive tape on the resting point of each rod end and run through a movement pattern to determine the length of the rods. If everything were level, you would only need to do this from the perspective of one of the rods .. I suppose where the stepper lies doesn't really matter, as lo

Watching the youtube video again, it seems like the bottom few inches of travel on the rods are wasted. If the steppers were a touch higher than the bed, you could increase build area for free.
That might also help with the end-stop design?

How would the dynamics of supporting this machine change if the entire machine were suspended or bolted to the underside of a desk/cabinet? Maybe this is the perfect design for taking a 3' media cabinet and stacking two of these on top of eachother inside.

You could build strut supports surrounded by a half-circle guide that a PVC size 'fits' into, so you could either string easily or slide a piece of pipe in place, or not use it at all?

Could the steppers be face-down where the PVC is, with a gear to the rods?
The orientation of the steppers in this design and the open space between them could let you run (slowly) all three rods with a large gear and a single stepper motor, with a switching interface using solenoids or some other creative printed gearing/engagement/transmission mechanism. Very novel. Could you animate a version that has one input mechanism and two outputs? i.e for synchronizing both sides of a Prusa-style Z? You could do some pretty interesting things with multiple outputs with varying 'cam' pass-through profilers.

Could you do this with a solenoid-powered hammer and a blast of dry-ice vapor? I am picturing something that is like a 4-part multihead?
Does it make sense to print the outer shell of the object and temper it completely before depositing a solid infill? Would tempering the shell allow it to withstand higher temperatures than the material being deposited?
