I dont think you are aiming too high. I built a prusa2 and I get some good prints using a .5mm j-head and a .3mm layer height. Personally building the machine will force you into knowing more about it, So WHEN it breaks, you will know how to fix it.
Take a look at the tantillus, It is making some crazy detailed prints and you can get a kit to assemble it yourself.

I have gotten pulleys and belts from them with no issues.. They are a pretty big company so sometimes small orders take a little longer.

Sorry for the hijack monkey,
imargonis --
I have a prusa i1 with printed PLA bushings. Honestly as a beginner I wish i'd gone with lm8uu right off the bat. I always had issues with my bed being a little wobbly and I didnt have the smoothest motions on my x axis. I have since started upgrading to lm8uu and it is a world of difference.. Best $20 i spent on this printer so far.

Yes you need two pulleys, one for the X and one for the Y
As far as the bearing for the bed, the picture you posted is of a PLA bushing. It is designed to snap directly on the smooth rods. I found with my machine I had to slide them on the rods or the PLA snapped in two. I also ran it over a threaded rod a bit to make it fit on my smooth rod.
Also what is your location? If you are stateside i'd

I print with PLA on blue painters tape all the time with my heat bed off... Also make sure your bed is level, even if its a little out it can affect the first layer sticking. Use 1 piece of paper and check all 4 corners, you should be able to feel a light drag on the paper when you do this. And make sure you level the bed with the Hot end at temperature.

Have you looked at the resulting g-code to see if the slicer is actually slicing the whole part, or is repeteir only showing half of the full g-code. This may rule out a visualization problem vs a slicing problem..

I tried again with just the base firmware just pulled the from Git. -- Changed the board to 62 and set both thermisters to 1. Also set my default steps per mm. Still no heated bed.
I guess I'll stick with marlin for now, didnt realize that the EEPROM settings GUI worked with marlin too!!
Thanks for the great printer interface

Repetier
I decided to try out the repetier firmware today because I like the host so much, moving from Marlin -- which worked great --
I cannot seem to get the heated bed to work... I checked the pins.h file and all of the pins match what I have in Marlin, made sure the right thermister was listed, I even forced the heated bed to true in the firmware.. I am getting proper temp feedback in the counsel, it

I'll go with Andrew on checking the baud rate also, I can't remember if mine was set t 115200 when I got it or not. I do know now I am running 250000 but I think that's set in the firmware.

Well if you want a quick way to get going try repetier --Repetier Host Install Just started working with it and I think it's great!!
I also have the same botronicz board, I ended up putting Marlin on it, but I have had no issues with it so far

Finally getting decent prints out of my printer so I thought I'd give this a shot. Everything was looking great until I got to the top and my fan wasn't blowing on the print surface anymore... Also I slowed the print down to 60% for the last 50 layers.

Both ACE hardware and Gill-Roys by me carry down to 3mm, but you pay for it. Good luck at any of the 3 national chains - Home Depot, Lowes, or Menards - They dont carry crap for metric.
I seem to be getting good at this thread hijacking stuff...Sorry

Yeah, I have the same problem getting M3x10 here
6-32x1" = .10
M3x10 = 1.79
Go figure

Are your e steps/mm calculated right? looks like too much plastic is building up and causing that corner to lift when changing z height. Another thing that might help is a fan to cool the part. I dont have much experience with PLA so hopefully someone else will chime in.

Looks real nice -- I have it installed and will be trying it live on my machine tonight. The only thing I noticed so far, that might even be a "feature", is when you use the arrows to move the layer height it runs in reverse. The slider bar works great, and I love the simple interface.
So far so good!

I think you just explained whats going on with my printer. I have a printed J-head holder and it must be flexing down when I am extruding. Time to look at

jonathanbyrn,
I had the same issue as you with that .5mm thin wall cube, What I ended up doing was slicing a 20mm cube with 1 perimeter and no infill and testing it via the stated extrusion width in slic3r Gcode file.

In order to get the M106 code in Slic3r, you need to enable cooling on the cooling tab. All relevant settings for fan speed are there too.

Are you sure that the thermister is reading correctly? You might want to check it with a probe thermometer or better yet a thermocouple before you go any further.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I will be ordering a heatbed later this week, and getting a piece of glass for on top. I thought I got PLA when I ordered my plastic but when it arrived I noticed my mistake.

I do not have a heated bed, I am printing on masking tape directly on top of the MDF
I think i will go and get some plexiglass today and see if that helps
Side note: Can you print ABS right on to plexiglass?

OK so I spent 2 hours last night finally getting my bed leveled on my prusa - I printed out a few pieces (Test Cubes, Z Endstop Adjuster, Some XL gears) So everything was great last night. This morning I get up and went to print Z rod constraints and my bed is completely un-level again!! This is driving me nuts... If it was just the overall height I could adjust it easy, however the whole dang be

You guys rock!! I would have spent hours trying to figure this out. Bad solder joint in the connector housing, the wire was just sitting there and must have come dislodged when I moved the machine.

I finally got all of my electronics and steppers wired last night, and had a great time "air printing" some items. Everything seemed to be working well, i had calculated steps/mm and everything. I let it go through a few prints and decided to call it a night. (BTW I have a nerf gun printed in air if anyone wants to buy )
This morning I cleaned my workspace and wanted to do one more "air print" ju
