Oh, don't misunderstand. I'm not complaining.I'm asking because I was thinking about building a solution, but only if other people had the same problems I did. I don't think there's insufficient information. It's just not easily accessible. For those embedded in the community, you know where to look, who to ask, or even what things are called. For new-comers, they have to get all of that backgroby iamwil - General
Joe, Thanks for the answers. But, isn't it better if people don't have to ask for an updated BOM? Or see an updated vendor list? I agree it's a pain in the ass to do, and that's why it's not done. But if it could be magically be updated, wouldn't that be better than having to ask people on IRC? Wilby iamwil - General
What about all the non-3d printed parts? Like the stepper motors, etc? Wilby iamwil - General
I'm guessing the MacGyver approach happens because people care about getting the immediate thing working, but don't care too much about reproducibility? And in addition, documentation is a hassle, so no one does it? Does anyone use some sort of inventory tracker / bill of materials? Or we're mostly passing around excel spreadsheets? Wilby iamwil - General
Hi all, Have any of you had problems sourcing the parts for a 3D printer? When I'm building a 3D printer, I run into the following problems: 1) Can't find a definitive Bill of materials for the 3D printer I want to build. When I do find it, I don't know if it's the latest version. I have to take a lot of time searching around, and asking around. To add to the difficulty, sometimes, there are moby iamwil - General
Hi all, I wrote up another OpenSCAD guide, this time on how to make custom cookie cutters with offsets and minkowski sums. Let me know if you find this useful. Wilby iamwil - General
Hey all, Here are more improvements as I spit-shine and turd polish Cubehero. - Editing README from the web. This has been one annoyance that's been around for too long. Now, you can edit the README directly from the website, instead of having to upload an updated README. - All text posted, such as topic text, comments, and README is now using Github flavored markdown to make it easier to postby iamwil - Object repositories
Yes, I run cubehero.com. It's a place where people can post projects and work together on projects. Check it out and lemme know what you think.by iamwil - Object repositories
Hi all, I wrote a guide on how to emboss and impress images onto a surface using OpenSCAD, using Imagemagick and a little bit a Ruby. For those that don't want to manually go through all the steps, I've packaged it up in a library called Embossanova. Let me know if you have any feedback or corrections. Wilby iamwil - 3D Design tools
Hey there! Thanks for the feedback. I did originally have centering in there, but I didn't want the beginner's guide to get too long, as to discourage people. I also had stuff about coincident faces, but figured that's all stuff that comes later on. I'll add it to the list of things I'll put together next time!by iamwil - 3D Design tools
Hey all, I've always liked OpenSCAD, so I wrote a beginner's guide to OpenSCAD. If you ever wanted to get started on OpenSCAD, today's the day.by iamwil - 3D Design tools
Hi all, Hope you're doing well. Just a small update on Cubehero. I got asked a lot about why there wasn't search for the longest time. It was mostly because 1) I was overthinking it, and 2) I wanted to focus on the collaboration part. But the voices were often, so I finally just decided to do it. As a result, I also added a section for making requests, if you aren't able to find what you're lookby iamwil - Object repositories
Weird. according to the directory in devel, under AO-101, most of the files are in downloads. This is what I mean by it's hard to find which files are which, and you don't know which ones are the latest ones. Thanks for the update on the X-carriage! I'll update the AO-101 repo with the upgrades.by iamwil - Object repositories
As far as I can tell after watching it for a while, Lulzbot doesn't really update their AO-101 downloads folder--as they've moved on to their TAZ and TAZ 2 printers. Sure, if you have FreeCAD versions of the 3D printed parts, I can put that into the repo. If you want to keep your own repo of a AO-100 and AO-101 hybrid, by all means, create a repo on Cubehero and you can upload the files to thaby iamwil - Object repositories
Hi all, Recently, I used free tools, such as OpenSCAD, Inkscape, and GIMP to extrude an image into a 3D model, for patterns I wanted to model. In this case, it was a leaf vein pattern from an image of a leaf. I wrote up a quick guide on how to do it. Enjoy! I plan on writing more OpenSCAD stuff. Are there other topics you'd like to see written about? Wilby iamwil - OpenSCAD
Hey all, Just wanted to let you know that the Lulzbot AO-101 is now hosted at Cubehero. I wanted to make open source 3D printers more accessible, so I mirrored the project to make it more accessible. Let me know if you have any feedback. Wilby iamwil - Object repositories
I'm still relatively new at 3D modeling, and my main tool of choice right now is OpenSCAD, coming from the programming world, it was a nice fit. However, while it's good at mechanical CAD, I was wondering about more organic shapes. It was difficult for it to handle things beyond a certain size of complexity. I made an iPhone 4 back cover for Graftconcepts, and here's the link. This time, I trieby iamwil - Look what I made!
Hi all, I had been thinking about trying my hand at an iPhone 4 back cover for a Graftconcept iphone cover I got. Their back covers are modular, so I decided to print one. I ported the spiral cup pattern, unfurled it, and put it on the back cover. It was a challenging print, and I had to adjust the parameters a little. However, I had to print at 100microns, and it's still a bit rough. I think thby iamwil - Look what I made!
Hi all, This was was mostly about fixing little things that were annoying on Cubehero. I've been adding a fair amount of features in the last 6 weeks, and it was time to go a bit slower and take stock of what's been slightly broken along the way. Turd polishing, if you will. I've added a basic commit history to every physible project now, so you can see all the changes, good or bad. You still cby iamwil - Object repositories
Hi all, Cubehero finally launches categories! Whoot. I'm pretty excited about it. I have to admit, this was by far the most requested feature, and the thing I put off for a while, thinking it's ok due to the low number of physible projects. However, I bit the bullet and got it in there. Though it doesn't look like much, I spent a long while designing it and making it simple. When navigation is dby iamwil - Object repositories
Aww. I guess it seems like that since I linked to the blog post. I figured some explanation why would make sense, and didn't want to type it twice. But I can see that. In the future, I'll just post my thoughts here, instead of linking to it. Thanks for the guidance, ya'll.by iamwil - General
@DuexVis Sorry about that. Should I delete it off either one? Or should I tag it as a cross-post? I posted in "General", and then in "Look what I made", which I figured were both appropriate sections. I just thought it was something fun, and wanted to share. Didn't mean to be considered to be badly behaving. Lemme know, thanks! @pokey9000, Hey there, you probably signed up for Cubehero at some pby iamwil - General
Hey guys, I was thinking that it'd be great to be able to spray vodka, so I used the threaded library to make an adapter between sprayers and the Smirnoff vodka bottle. So now you can shoot vodka into your mouth at a party, or create a makeshift flamethrower! If you want to print your own, I have it hosted here. If you have fits to other types of bottles, you can submit patches to me at w&by iamwil - General
Hey guys, Over the weekend, I was thinking about why you couldn't have different types of dispensers for different types of liquids in bottles that you had in the house. I was thinking the the soap dispenser would be great for a bottle of sriracha. But then I thought about being able to add a sprayer to vodka, and wondered why nobody did that before. So I set out to do it. I used the threaded liby iamwil - Look what I made!
Matt, Thanks for the feeback! I just released support for all six CC licenses, and will add support for some of the other licenses as well. Technically, you can add the license files by uploading it, but people seem to like a web interface. So now, you shouldn't have problems with conflicting license types. Thanks! To do a 3D viewer for OpenSCAD files would require me either rewriting OpenSCAD's parser and renderer, or try to compile OpenSCAD to javascript using emscripten. Either one is a bit involved right now, and I have some basic showstoppers that I need to implement (like search and categories) that seem more important to people. Unless a bunch of people say they can't live without an OpenSCADby iamwil - General
Hi all, I finally got OpenSCAD previews done. You can now see image previews of your OpenSCAD files. Here's another example with a chess set. I've got bigger releases coming up. Thanks for your support so far! Let me know if you have other feedback. Wilby iamwil - Object repositories
Hi all, It was on the backburner for a while. But I finally got it done. Cubehero now makes image previews of your OpenSCAD files. So if your project uses OpenSCAD, you no longer have to generate STL files to get image previews of the files.
