Hi all, Been off for a long time - i was active on the Ormerod back in the day, had a Mk1 and many will probably remember me as the guy that made the CNC aluminium print bed supports and X-arm kits for it I'm thinking of getting back into 3d just for fun, i'm retired now and miss my CNC machines Is there a recommendation for a kit 3d printer that is pretty much guaranteed to work well - theby Davek0974 - General
Yes, the chances are that your wood parts have shrunk/expanded over time and are now loose. The best solution I would go for would be a drop or two of superglue, epoxy etc just to firm it all up again. To design, test and product the parts in metal would take considerable effort and as the machine is no longer a production model, sales would likely be minimal. Nice to hear they are still runniby Davek0974 - Ormerod
Hi all, the Mk1 bed used the original support frames, the Mk2 model had the aluminium supports as shown by Chris above. There was never a full kit for the Mk1 model Ormerodby Davek0974 - Ormerod

Hi all, As a reminder to those new here, I'm the guy that makes the aluminium replacement beds and X-arms for the Ormerod I just thought i'd ask to see if there were any other parts that could be made to improve or modify the Ormerod or indeed any other printer?? I have CNC capability in aluminium, steel, brass etc up to a fairly large size now as well as bead-blasting for finish, diamond engby Davek0974 - Ormerod
Hi all, Christmas is coming - we still supply the bed and arm kits for mk1's and bed kits for mk2'sby Davek0974 - Ormerod
QuoteKaroo Klong Thanks for the advice. I had an X-ARM made this week and when I went to fetch it yesterday I saw that the arm has bent from the lazer cutting heat. They will now make a new one for me from a higher grade aluminium om Tuesday. They gave me the detective part so I finished it off and bent it a little and seems like it will work fine. I cant wait for put it all together. I also haby Davek0974 - Ormerod

If the z on yours can be lifted off the nut, it should glide up and down very smoothly, no sticky spots. Is there a chance the nut is worn and jamming? Someone else will have to offer help with motor currents as i have not changed these but i think steps of 100mA will be good to try, I just do not know the upper limit.by Davek0974 - Ormerod
QuoteSardi EDIT: I have raised the Z to +40, when I lowered it back down the 0.0 was +0.8 from the bed. Any ideas what can cause this? Sounds like the axis is losing steps on the drive, check the moving parts for stiffness, lubricate the Z nut maybe, possibly increase z axis motor currentby Davek0974 - Ormerod
Excellent, thanks for the feedback.by Davek0974 - Ormerod

Just a reminder that the machined aluminium parts for Mk1 and Mk2 machines are still availableby Davek0974 - Ormerod
QuoteMechaBits I'm looking for something like this for the base of my Z but without having to buy the whole drill press, I need this X arrangement of the slots, can anyone recommend a search term, besides face plate, they seem a little expensive. Hi, I could probably machine something like that from solid for you, would need dimensions etc to get a firm idea of what is needed. Yes the armsby Davek0974 - Ormerod
This was one of the reasons I stopped supplying the shim. Provided your runner bearing is in good condition and turns freely, the shim is not needed on the aluminium arms. The only failure to - date was caused by a jammed runner bearing. As DC42 has said - the metal must be spotlessly clean before applying or it will fail. I can send you out another length of shim if you like, UK only, PM meby Davek0974 - Ormerod

They are used on high-end milling machines which use flood coolant, that said, they do have way covers and forced lubrication etc but i have seen them covered in muck and swarf. They have wipers on each end, I fitted dual wipers just to make sure The coolant is generally oil based even the water soluble ones so its never just plain water.by Davek0974 - Ormerod
Fair enough then, it may be better than i think.by Davek0974 - Ormerod
I have a feeling that friction will kill your design I'm afraid - personally i would not go that way. There are no rotating elements in either of those parts - just relies on slip of the nylon used. Stuff like this will last a lifetime... HiWin Rails Ball Screws Clearly the cost will higher and be an issue probably but the results would be measurable i think, the two links are just examples oby Davek0974 - Ormerod
