After I broke mine I had new ones laser cut. The fit is looser than the original and my x-y axes are at exactly 90 degrees, so I wonder if the extremely tight fit of the original parts isn't a disadvantage - leading to slightly off center insertion which twists the axis and stresses the part when the other end of the rod is inserted into the opposite acrylic piece. Hi all, After noticing a progressive darkening of the solder joint on the bed of my Ormerod 2 ( and reading this thread) I did some (rather unscientific) experimentation. Whether this is of any use to anyone I can't say, but here goes: 1) Firstly I felt the terminals during operation (one at a time!) - When turning on the bed, by the time the temp read 40 degrees C the terminals were already toby jamesf - Ormerod
A slight imperfection in the glass at that point? Have you tried taking the reading at very slightly different coordinates? Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Quotedmould Many major all-night supermarkets stock SD cards (usually near the phones), so unless you lose it on a Sunday evening you can get another one reasonably quickly ... Actually have a few spare - but one keeps on thinking "I'll find it now" - I mean - how hard could it be!by jamesf - Ormerod
Dave you made my day! I was thinking the old age must really be catching up! Unfortunately my search was fruitless. I heard the damn thing hit the desk in front of the printer, but absolutely no idea where it went after that. Also suspect it may be jammed in printer somewhere, and I just know that five minutes after putting a new card in I will find it! Have just downloaded DC42's firmware. Hoby jamesf - Ormerod
Thanks guys Dave, I also suspect a bad crimp - in the past fiddling with the wires has got the sensor going long enough for homing and bed comp, but seems to need a little more effort this time. Probably just going to redo all the connections when I have time. I am sure your sensor board will solve this too :-) - sent you PM earlier regarding that. DasBasti - I also thought was there must bby jamesf - Ormerod
Hi all Ormerod 2 Ok, after printing a perfect snowman, I couldnt get near the printer for a couple of weeks due to work. Saturday I wanted to reprint the orthagonal compensation pieces with compensation included to see whether I got the axes right. First the Z sensor is misbehaving (I am quite accustomed to this by now) - it reads 1015 to 1020 constantly, and this time nothing I do will fixby jamesf - Ormerod
Payment Made Thanks Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Too late to say "YES PLEASE" ? Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
I found that with something like the orthagonal compensation piece, that has a relatively small surface area in contact with the bed, a good whack from the side gets it off (use something that wont damage the piece obviously - and slide whatever you're using along the bed and into the side of the print. For those less violent than me :-) and for prints with a lot of surface in contact with theby jamesf - Ormerod
Hi Tim no I understood your modification perfectly. To quote the new ormerod 2 documentation "The laser cut fan spacer replaces the heatsink-duct and fan-duct in the assembly, and is sandwiched between the fan and the heatsink. Make sure it is orientated as shown in the picture, with the extra lug sticking out the side; it is to mount an optional fan onto, which will be released shortly." If yby jamesf - Ormerod
Hi Tim May try your challenge this weekend! Also note that Reprap have changed the design in new Ormerod 2 kits, and put in single laser cut part instead of the old duct system (now part of documentation here I am considering having the part laser cut and going that way, but want to gain some more hands on experience as well. As Dave points out, a lot of this is down to experience and propeby jamesf - Ormerod
Hi Joel Could you not use a different power supply - like this Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Hi Dave I would also be interested in a kit (Ormerod 2) If someone could post a picture of the MK1 conversion I could also help with the measurements. Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Thats quite a severe slip. check that the grub screw on the pulley is still aligned with the flat of the motor shaft Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
hi Alex your compensation looks fine to me forgive me if this is a silly question but were all axes homed before you ran command for automatic bed leveling? Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
I see you've left the white protective plastic on the acrylic plate, is it possible that is fouling the system somewhere? Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Have you tried new Allen keys on the grub screws. My first set really didn't fit well (the 1.5 mm was actually 1.75 when I measured it). Got a better set and then only could I get the screws really tight.by jamesf - Ormerod
Thanks Dave, Ian It was actually the fact that the print looked quite good otherwise that bothered me when it appeared it was too short. I couldn't think of any good reason it should be shorter while otherwise ok. As Ian says the difference in the compensation/calibration is actually negligible and probably a non-issue.by jamesf - Ormerod
Thanks Ian Think I see the problem: According to your picture, you are reading right down to the surface of the lower arm, but the instructions read "Finally, measure the distance between the tip of the projection near the angled corner and..." The difference between the projection and the lower arm should account for the 5 mm difference I am seeing. The only question then is which is the corrby jamesf - Ormerod
Interesting thread - never occurred to me that screw terminals could be that complex! :-) I see the instructions state that the resistance of the bed should be about 1.3 Ohms. Perhaps it should be more clearly stated how dangerous a higher resistance could end up being? Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Treth a Solar or golf cart battery would be a good choice for longer running periods as they are deep cycle and can be discharged to a greater degree than car type batteries .Almost any charger would do as long as it has overcharge protection.Solar chargers tend to do a lot with charge voltage as you say as to be efficient they must convert high voltage from the panel ( as high as 17 v for a "12vby jamesf - Ormerod
Thanks for the feedback guys, Erik, I am indeed planning on printing these parts as soon as calibration is complete. I see the hotend fan duct has been eliminated from the latest spec of the Ormerod 2 and replaced with laser cut acrylic part. I am seriously considering going that route. But since I will be printing with ABS at some point the others will come in handy as well. Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Hi all, We are entering thunderstorm season here with lots of power outages so a few questions: Besides the pain of having a print interrupted, what are the possible issues with power failures? My main concern is loss of power to the hot-end fan, with possible damage to printed parts around the nozzle as well as filament melting too far up the nozzle. I therefore want to use a small PC UPSby jamesf - Ormerod
My apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere. My issues with the IR sensor continue. After the printer not having been touched for more than a week, the first X and Z homing both fail - again the Ir sensor is not returning proper values, and again its a case of the wiring at the sensor itself not making contact for some reason. I am probably going to remove the crimps from the supplied conby jamesf - Ormerod
Don't worry - I also had a moment of idiocy with this one and mine wasn't even under the sticker :-)by jamesf - Ormerod
Well a business trip has kept me away from the printer, but here are pics of the first print - quite happy with it - photos not that great, difficult to focus on the white surface. Just a question - the length of the calibration wheel piece is supposed to be 78 mm from tip of lower projection to center of screw. Mine is 73.5 - didnt expect it to be that far out - any thoughts? Or am I over thinby jamesf - Ormerod
jstck, I was actually thinking exactly the same thing. Not going to take a chance with them working loose again.by jamesf - Ormerod
LOL Ian Most of the things you call "fiddly" I call suicide inducing! But the PSU mounting was the worst (even with a long reach Allen key)! Surprisingly, getting the nut onto the screw in the spool holder went faster than I expected. I may write up my method as contribution to your intructions ;-) (which are excellent by the way)!by jamesf - Ormerod
Hi Have you checked that the grub screws on your X and Y pulleys are tight and still in correct position. Look at my post here Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
