Hey Aahz!
I met spacexula last week, he actually helped me with my hot end issues and I've printed a bunch of stuff since then! My advice on printheads is limited but I will say that makergear seems to be the place to go... I had some fairly common issues with gaps and filament stripping in my stock makerbot hot end.
