Well, I've been kind of distracted from Mendel building for quite a while. I'm finally (I hope) digging out of that stuff. Currently I've got a pretty complete set of electronics sitting on my desk at home and nothing more. Next step I think is going to be a set of stepper motors and some cabling and connectors. I have also (finally) put together a web hosting at www.ninecrows.com. Currentlyby KyleWilson - Reprappers
Hi tetsujin. Nice to know that there are other folks in the area who are playing with this stuff. I've so far bought a sanguino board and an extruder controller and a batch of Polulu/Allegro 4983 stepper controllers. I've also downloaded the code from the RepRap repository. Looked at it a little, but not yet finished putting together a build environment and run a build. Still got lots to doby KyleWilson - Reprappers
From some of what I've been reading (I think the posting was from nophead) you may need an exhaust duct (to control the temperature inside the cabinet and possibly to extract fumes). It sounded as if his experiments with a closed cabinet wound up needing a separate temperature sensor and a switch fan/vent system to keep the temperature in the box below the plastic transition temperature of the pby KyleWilson - Reprappers
Thanks for the pointers, jkelso. I'm impressed with the price that Fleming CNC has listed for their plastics. Leaves me very tempted to bust my budget (credit card...yay) and order a set of plastics from them (but not quite...yet). Looked at Phidgets too and they seem to have competatively priced steppers (and I'm assuming from the look of things that they're in the US, so shipping shouldn't bby KyleWilson - Reprappers
Thanks for the comments back. Following your progress in getting your system up and running was very helpful. I've been looking at this stuff for about six months or so, but now I'm finally getting started ordering. I just looked at the shipping from Mendel-part for a set of steppers and some other trivia and it came to $45.00 for about $130.00 of parts. That backed me off from making a quickby KyleWilson - Reprappers
Having just put my first post in this thread, I think I'm going to order a set of four steppers from mendel-parts.com. I like the fact that they're two ended (would allow adding a rotation encoder if I ever wanted to play with one) and they are presumably tested in Mendel builds. I'm also tempted to add in a belts set, bearing and a thick aluminum print bed (even though I most likely won't needby KyleWilson - Reprappers
I've been following the Isaac Mendel build thread by jkelso that has been posted here recently and I'm finally beginning to order parts so that I can begin building a Mendel. I'm starting out by buying the electronics and will move on to the mechanicals once I have most of the electronics in hand and working (and when my budget allows...can't buy everything at once, unfortunately). Great discussion thread! I'm in the process of scoping out a parts buy to put a Mendel together. Was really great to follow your travails in getting the parts together and working. I'll probably start a thread here when I get my initial parts orders figured out and get going on building a machine for real. My background seems to be almost a mirror of yours. I think that it can also be the result of the electrical step pulse count overrunning the physical motor/gear output. If you step faster than the mechanical can respond then you wind up shaking the rotor back and forth as the windings pull forward, neutral and then backward in quick succession. That is part of the reason (maybe the only reason) that steppers want to be 'ramped' when starting uby KyleWilson - Reprappers
