I was changing filament today and when I was flushing the old color out I noticed the new color felt rough so I thought I would show a photo for those that don't know that moisture can be a problem with ABS filament. This is a 50X microscope view or silver ABS extruded with a .40mm nozzle. You can see all the pits in the surface and while this would print, it would not be a silky smooth print liby tmorris9 - General
I use PEI as well and I love it. When my PEI was due to be changed (because I gouged it up accidentally) I decided to try BuildTak and while it works I damaged it really quickly and went through 5 of the 6 sheets I bought in a month, I print with ABS mostly and was happy with the results other than it was way to easy to tear and rip. P.S. Do not print flexible materials like Ninja-Flex (TPI ??)by tmorris9 - General
Sorry to hear... Guess I am sticking with Yosemite for a while longer. it's been rock solid for me.by tmorris9 - Reprappers
Sounds like you either just got a bad piece or someone sold you plane plate glass as boro.by tmorris9 - General
All of the hotends I have had (around 4 different ones) have all had an aluminum mount that then mounts to ABS plastic extruder. The top the hotend is not too hot for ABS but it is for PLA. Almost all extruders are made of ABS plastic on RepRap machines.by tmorris9 - Reprappers
Not saying you are wrong about your glass but I have seen this several times in forums when the real culprit is the X axis rods bowing down from the weight of the carriage. 8mm rods and even 10mm rods suffer from this issue due to the weight of the hotend, extruder and so on, they end up bowing down in the middle which if you strictly going by the nozzle distance can seem like the glass is bowingby tmorris9 - General
Good to know they are finally fixing El Capitan. I stayed with Yosemite for now and had to reload Yosemite on 2 other friends computers when they had major issues with El Capitan.by tmorris9 - Reprappers
I feel for you. I just did that a week ago and used heat, acetone, orange oil (same as goo gone) and a scraper. Spent a good 4 hours making the glass usable again and made a major mess in the process. One person mentioned putting it in the freezer for awhile and another mentioned a product called "Rapid Remover" it's made for removing vinyl lettering like on signs and vehicles. Good luck and weaby tmorris9 - General
Funny, the museum where that machine is, is like 3 miles from my house. I have been meaning to visit for around 4 years but have not gotten around to it yet.by tmorris9 - General
I print structural parts all the time with ABS and there are tricks to making them strong. First off you want to go to 100% infill. Next you need to print it hotter, if you have an all metal hot end you can try 245 or 250 if it's not all metal then 240 is the max you can go but that extra 5 degrees makes a lot of difference. Next you want to make sure the perimeters and infill touch, it's hard tby tmorris9 - Printing
Search for micro blower and you should find many under 25mm or so.by tmorris9 - General
Wondering what the best method is to cutting PEI. I am ordering some a little over 1mm thick and comes in 12" x 24" sheets and I need it to be 300mm x 300mm. I don't know if a jigsaw is best or score and snap like acrylic works on PEI... It's a bit pricey and I just don't want to get cracks all over it. Thanksby tmorris9 - General
Warping with ABS (especially thin parts) is due to surrounding temperature. If you want to stop the issue you need to raise the temperature around the part & printer and the best way to do that is to build an enclosure around the printer (even a cardboard box will help). If you plan on doing these items often then building a proper insulated box is preferred, just Google 3D printer enclosureby tmorris9 - Printing
If that photo is of the bottom layer, then your bed is NOT level. Extruding more plastic is a sudo fix but the correct fix is to properly level your bed.by tmorris9 - Printing
If you are printing with ABS, then I would say that looks exactly like over extrusion on the first layer. I suffered with that for a long time until I realized what it was. Lower the extrusion rate at least on the first layer.by tmorris9 - Printing
UPDATE I finally received a notice from ebay about my parts listed by just3dprint, they said we received your request but the item is no longer listed so no action is taken. I went online to verify it and I found that all the items just3dprint was selling have been removed. I don't have any information other than that, his account is still valid so I don't know if they voluntarily took it downby tmorris9 - General
I make a lot of ABS parts and I always worried about the strength of layer adhesion until I got an all metal hotend and I could crank up the temperature. The difference in layer adhesion from 240c to 245c is amazing. I don't have a full scientific way to measure but I did print some test parts that I could hook a fish scale to and at 240c I could break the layer between bonds at around 25lbs of fby tmorris9 - General
Quotemsaeger I'm not saying this guy isn't a jerk but look how many people sell 3d printed parts for printers and printer kits isn't that the same thing? Maybe some of them get permission from the designer but I doubt they all do. No it's not the same. Almost nobody would release files for a 3D printer under the non commercial license, that means it's perfectly fine and ethical to sell them. Alsby tmorris9 - General
He is absolutely wrong about it becoming public domain. And about you losing your rights. He is a dumb kid fresh out of college that thinks he knows it all but knows nothing.by tmorris9 - General
Thingiverse is aware and they are talking to their lawyers about it but they are not the rights holders. I have sent a DMCA to ebay which is the correct and legal way to get them to take down my items but this will only help those that do the same.by tmorris9 - General
Yes, it's bad. FIrst off I choose the non commercial license on purpose so that I have the option to sell my designs (and I do sell some of them) so if he sold the same designs then he is stealing my profit. Second, he stole my copyrighted photos as well. One of the things I do for a living is sell my photography as stock (used in advertising and such) now of course the photos he stole were not fby tmorris9 - General
Wanted to warn people that a scum bag has been downloading thousands of 3D files along with the photos and then posting prints of them all for sale on ebay. Most of my items are listed under the non commercial license yet I found (and reported) several he is selling. And he used photos I took to advertise them. Here is his store If you find your items there you should contact ebay about the iby tmorris9 - General
One possible issue is that is may not heat up at all. Microwaves heat food by vibrating water molecules so fast they create friction and thus heat, not sure if PLA would have enough moisture in it to heat up. I know I have had microwave safe plastics before that do not even get warm in the microwave. Just a thought.by tmorris9 - General
Success! After many attempts at using my Logitech webcam to do time lapse I gave up on that because the auto focus always cause parts of it to be out of focus and it was a fairly narrow field of view. So, I went back to trying to make my GoPro Session work by trying active cooling. I designed a case to hold it with a 40mm fan on the back and channels that run around the camera to see if I coulby tmorris9 - General
This may help though there is apparently no full list of commands as it seems it depends on your printer and firmware.by tmorris9 - General
Quotebuffcleb I'm a firefighter... you could try a firecam like this one : http://firevideo.net/index.php/fire-helmet-cameras/new-fire-cam-1080-wifi.html if it works inside a fire it should be ok here Thanks for the link, definitely something to look into.by tmorris9 - General
QuoteMechaBits did you have the hero mounted very close to heatbed? on moving carriage? how was the footage, any judder, another way I was thinking was off the moving bed but with a trigger to take pic at exact same point, for a much smoother timelapse. It was mounted on the bed but 3" above it. The images came out great but the print failed (my fault).by tmorris9 - General
Just as an update, I did try my Hero 4 Session in the heated chamber (it's fairly cheap camera) and it did not shut off with a 2 hour print but when done the case was so hot I could not hold it for more than a second (not good). I could not get any real info out of Brinno, they just had a U.S. rep say that it should work. It's a Korean company I think so I doubt they are wanting to give me any rby tmorris9 - General
Quotenebbian I use a mobius action camera as a webcam on my mac, it works well for me. Using VNC and screen sharing I can check on the progress of the print from my phone anywhere in the house, it works well for me. I hope this helps. I thought the Mobius had the same heat issue as GoPro and that's why they put the 2 heat syncs on the case in open air.by tmorris9 - General
JamesK, that is a good question but I am thinking there is just enough air flow at full speed. I might do some tests to see though I need a better way to test the actual airflow, then I can use my adjustable power supply to test it.by tmorris9 - General
