Glycerol is also the byproduct of making bio-diesel. There are now kits available for make your own fuel, and in the UK you are allowed to brew up to 2,500l per year without tax. The raw material is cooking oil, either fresh or used. So we can even be green while reprap-ing! Davidby davidgoodenough - Plastic Extruder Working Group
Nylon Rope trick - 16 years ago
Remembering back to my days doing Chemistry A-level, I recall the Nylon rope trick and wonder if it has relevance to RepRap. Nylon is formed by putting two liquids in a jar, which do not mix and one of them is heavier that the other, so they form two layers in the jar. But where they meet Nylon forms. How long to get started with RepRap - 16 years ago
My younger son is currently just completing his AS levels, doing double Maths, Physics and Design Technology. He has an interest in programming and robotics. I came across RepRap due to SlashDot and thought that this might make suitable summer project, or at least that he might be able to make enough of a start to have something that will do something useful by the end of the summer.
