I can sort you out if nobody else has offered. My prints aren't yet at the quality I'd like them to be (some backlash, still a bit of ooze etc) but they're certainly usable: If you're in a rush then I could do the print tonight and have it ready for you to pick up tomorrow (Saturday). Or I could mail it out to you on Monday. PM me if you're interested. I'm finding my second build much less neby Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
I recently bought their slightly cheaper cousins, the ones with the grub screw in the middle: Haven't had a chance to print with them yet but they seem pretty good, nice tight belt fit. You'll need to modify your firmware and scale your steps-per-mm by 0.8 in both X and Y axis, the general formula is: steps-per-mm = stepper-steps-per-revolution * micro-steps / belt-pitch / number-of-teeth Thby Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG

Silly question perhaps, but how is Prusa supposed to be pronounced? It is "Prooser" as in rhymes with "looser"? Or "Prussia" as in rhymes with "Russia"? Or something else?by Myndale - General Mendel Topics
There are a number of different things that can cause this. I had it happen myself recently and it turned out that my heat bed was too hot. I was printing PLA with a heat bed temperature of around 70 degrees C and it was enough to cause the lower layers of plastic to soften enough to shift over slightly. Another possibility is a problem with your z axis i.e. your entire x axis is shifting back aby Myndale - General Mendel Topics
Ah, ok, I was thinking that maybe the T5 belts were used to drive the more lightweight components in the car (pumps etc). Thanks for the links, I did know about ausxmods but was hoping to find a local supplier as well.by Myndale - General Mendel Topics
> If they can't get you belts based on the pitch then > there is something wrong. Understatement of the year I'm afraid I've visited about half a dozen different retailers that supply belts down here and the story is always the same. The belts come in boxes that have a part number listed on the outside but no information about pitch, length or tooth profile. Furthermore, the product numbeby Myndale - General Mendel Topics
Does anyone know which model car(s) the belts for Mendel are usually used in? (Assuming there are cars that use them, of course...I'm guessing there). Here in Australia timing belts don't have physical specs listed on the boxes they ship in, so unless you can tell the retailer which car you want it for they generally can't help you.by Myndale - General Mendel Topics
Absolutely happy to pay for a space myself. Apart from the fact that these get-togethers are a lot of fun I also find I learn quite a bit from each one, even when I've got a baby attached to the front of meby Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
I use Pololu drivers and I prefer them mounted up front where there's good ventilation and I can easily add a fan etc if I need, things get a bit warm down near the 100 degree C heat bed. Also in my particular case I'm in the process of adding a QVGA touchscreen to my electronics so I need them somewhere easily accessible to the user.by Myndale - General Mendel Topics
QuoteShulz its a bit annoying crimping the thermistor I find that soldering the thermistor leads works fine, they're quite long and the temperature has dropped quite a bit by the time you get to the end of them. The same can't be said about the heater resistor, even plumbing solder is weakened enough to make it unreliable. For that I take the metal parts out of a 2-way Weidmuller terminal andby Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
I gave the Moorabin store a call today and they said they no longer have it They said they do have fire mortor but no fire putty. She didn't seem to know if they had stopped stocking it or just didn't have some at the moment.by Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
I should be able to make it for a couple of hours, anyone need anything printed?by Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
For those still wanting a heat bed I've just made one for <$50 using parts sourced locally and based on a design that Auzze showed me. Jaycar sell 295x295mm aluminium sheets for $15, at 1.024mm thick they're thin enough to cut with a dremel or hacksaw but stiff enough to hold a heavy sheet of glass flat on top, at least from what I found. To the bottom of that you glue 8 12-ohm wire-wound resiby Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
Be wary of anything at Bunnings, they sell a few different brands of cheap fire-proof composite sealants (e.g. Selley's Fireblock) but if you read the fine print you'll note they're only fire-rated for a few hours and at a certain minimum thickness. I've been unable to find any specs on how they perform at typical extrusion temps. Whatever you do don't use JB Weld (available at Jaycar). The manuby Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
Oh wow, ok, thanks for the heads-up. I actually bought some black and white ABS from you guys so it's good to know it's suitable for that. (I've probably said it before but your staff were really great with my order btw). Stepping aside from your business interests for a moment do you have any thoughts on the viability of RepRap + ABS for water purification?by Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
I've got a personal interest in this area. One of the Gada prizes is to produce a $3 water purification device (coincidentally there's also an unrelated prize for developing a RepRap that meets certain criteria). A RepRapped water filtration system might be able to meet the criteria for the Water Liberation Prize but only if the materials can be definitively proven to be safe. Not that I want to curb any unbridled enthusiasm or anything but before you invest too much time it's worth bearing in mind that RepRap are a notoriously tough crowd to please at the best of times, far more so than other projects I've been involved in. Finding a way to reliably and consistently improve print quality across a wide range of different machines will generally be greeted with enthusiaby Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
Skeinforge here, I've had too many problems with the RepRap software. For printer control I'm using my own software which isn't compatible with any of the standard electronics.by Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
Hi guys, welcome to the group. I too started my career with a TAFE electronics course, that was a looong time ago With all due respect to Auzze I think the machine you decide to build should be influenced largely by what you plan to use it for. If you have a specific application in mind then Prusa is, by all accounts, a good decision since it's cheaper and less hassle and probably more reliableby Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
Heya Brett, welcome to the group. I'm a professional Java programmer myself (among other things), my background is 16 years in game development. Can't help you with the Ubuntu issue I'm afraid, when I first got into RepRap about a year ago there were a lot of things I didn't like about the existing electronics so I developed my own (it's under "Repic" on the Wiki). I vaguely remember seeing somby Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
Thanks for the heads-up Auzze. One of the main problems I see with things like the Wiki is that people experience gamblers syndrome...they only report their successes. Where RepRap really benefits the most IMO is when people report their failures, it saves the rest of us from wasting our time making the same mistakes. I remember reading an anecdotal story somewhere about Edison stating that theby Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG

Ack, so Scorpias reservations about the longevity of brushings turned out to be somewhat prescient, huh? Roughly how many hours of printing would you say they lasted? I've experienced this with skeinforge before, it will suddenly generate very slow code after tweaking settings that really shouldn't make much difference, like ambient air temperature etc. Golden rule seems to be don't tweak or disable anything that doesn't need it. I suggest you reset all your settings and take a look at the G1 codes in the output and make sure the feed rates (F parameter at thby Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
I had problems with the official RapRap software, although there's probably a setting somewhere to reduce the granularity. When I switched to SkeinForge it largely fixed it, note the 2nd picture in the May 25 entry on my blog at (the one with the two yellow gears).by Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
I'd be interested in red or orange myself. Thanks for dispatching my order so quickly btw, it's always great to find a local company that can ship stuff out quickly. Just out of curiosity, what's the minimum amount you need to justify doing a run?by Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
Sounds good to me, see you guys then!by Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
Awesome stuff, any photos? I'd be interested in seeing close-ups of any pieces you're printing, any any made by any other local RepRappers for that matter. I'm at the stage where I'm printing perfectly usable pieces but I'm still trying to improve the quality. Would like to see other people's results so I at least have something to compare to.by Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
Glad to hear you'd made some progress. Keep us informed in the lead-up to the meeting, especially if you still haven't got things working by then. Must be pretty frustrating to have a mechanically operational RepRap only to be held up by problems with the electronics. If it helps any I've printed out the fourtrax pen holder (Thingiverse #3593) which I'd be happy to loan you or trade for a few beby Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
May 21/22 works for me too. Can't host it myself this time either as we've just had a baby, but should be able to spare a few hours to bring along the Mendel.by Myndale - Australia, Melbourne RUG
