Have you ensured the extruder is at the correct temperature? At the moment my thermistor reads incorrectly, 15+ degrees higher then it should so i adjust for this before i print. Might be worth testing by starting a print with 225 degrees if it goes o.k after 3 to 5 layers then drop the temperature 5 degrees and continue until the clunking starts again this allows you to see if its temperature reby Mrp23 - Prusa i3 and variants
You really need to figure out exactly what printer you have, can you post a link to the printer? We may then be able to point you in the direction of where to find the correct firmware (if required) or where you need to start ,as at the moment you are as you say "in over your head". I will though try and help where possible.by Mrp23 - Prusa i3 and variants

Hi ettie1972, If you are wanting to clarify the positions of all connectors on the gt2560 board take a look here under interface layout: what exactly is the issue with loading the filament?by Mrp23 - Prusa i3 and variants
I also have this printer and have experienced similar issues, "clunking" whilst feeding the filament and thermistors reading incorrectly (still not addressed this actually), to help the clunking issue i printed this: i printed it for the right side and rotated the hotend and motor assembly 180% degrees re-drilling the 6 or 8mm hole (i forget) at the back of the L shape plate, it seems to have heby Mrp23 - Prusa i3 and variants
