Please excuse the reply to an ancient thread (but then again, most of the NZ topic threads are pretty old!). I've not printed for a while as I've been rebuilding my printer to use the smaller filament and a Bowden. Also, my son got a Delta, so that was a pleasant distraction too. I'm using FLSun filament in my rebuilt printer and am very happy. It prints very well in my opinion. By the way, havby butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group
I cooked the original board in my FLSUN once I started to use the heated bed. Happen to anyone else? I switched to the MKS GEN 1.4 with drv8825 and getting overall much better results. A tip. While I was at it, I found some LCD strips that just fit inside the slots in the frame. These can run off the 12v auxiliary pins on the new board. I have the same extruder and the exact same issue as SkeptikRC. My old Wades style extruder was running at about 0.45v v-ref. Increasing to 0.85v with this one has made no difference, and the stepper stays "active" somehow, i.e. makes grrr noises! Any ideas?by butterfinger - General
We were there! Yeah - loved the wry laughter from the audience when the lady told them to switch off phones. Really enjoyed Tim's lecture. My sons found the content really interesting, and also commented on his style - really relaxed and enthusiastic. This has been a great series, and I hope they do more. The library have announced that they'll now be running some workshops for beginners, whichby butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group
Hopefully the guy with the cell phone and absolutely no manners whatsoever will decide 3D printing isn't for him.by butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group
First lecture tonight, and what a turnout! We arrived at about 10 to 7, and there were maybe 25 people milling around looking at the printers on display in the foyer, so we thought, "this is us, the website said about 25 had registered, so it's good to see everyone show up". Little did we know! One of the organizers said that they were about to start, so we walked into the 300 seat theatre expecby butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group

Starting out from scratch again I'd still go with the ORD Hadron, but my second printer's going to be an OB1.4. I think there's a lot to be said for having two. That way one can always be working while you're making parts and tinkering with the other.by butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group
I've not installed my heated bed - still in the box - so not that. I'm using an Ord Hadron, and there are a couple of corrective options to try. One is better stepper/screw couplers, and the other decouples the print carriage from the Z-screws. Bothe easy enough to try and appear successful for others.by butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group

If you have a design then you can always get Ponoko to laser cut it for you. It's not cheap but it does avoid the hassle.by butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group

Just had to tell someone. My prints are finally looking good!!by butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group
It might be interesting to pick one of the most "standard" printer designs and then see just how cheaply it can be procured, based on its bill-of-materials. Prusa?by butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group

LM8UU Bearings (4 pack) : $10.30 Skate bearings are a dollar each on Trademe if you search for "abec bearings". 12v 30A power supply : $41by butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group
All prices in NZD, including shipping. 5x NEMA17 steppers (link from IRC channel bot): $88 Ramps 1.4, Arduino and stepper boards: $123 Heated bed: $30 J-Head Mk V-B : $72 Filament's cheapest and easiest from Diamond Age. I've zero vested interest in any of these sites - just interested in how cheaply one can get started in NZ. I was in the original pre-order group. All in it's cost me around $900, but to be honest I've little "free" time so haven't exactly shopped around for the cheapest options. I think it's possible to squeeze under $800 if you've the time to shop around. There a Chinese company that sells the Hadron as a kit now, but I forget the name. I went. Great to see so many printers up and running, and my young sons came away very enthused. "Can we build a delta next, Daddy?". Err, maybe...by butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group
Sorry. I just had to share. My printer finally printed something! Just in time for Makertorium, so I can feel like I belong. Of course, I have plenty of calibration to do, but the damned thing is working.by butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group

I'm enjoying seeing your work - great stuff. Really tempted to build one of these once my first printer's up and running. I like the aesthetic - looks rock solid and has a nice "engineery" feel to it.by butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group

I had similar issues getting a plain vanilla Arduino to work on Windows 8. This fixed it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdE72XUYC7k Not sure if it'll work on an Azteeg, but as I finally finished my wiring I'm about to need to try!by butterfinger - General
A good source for Acme threaded rods and nuts is TechPaladin: If anyone's interested in sharing shipping to NZ, let me know. You're looking at $40 US for a pair of rods, nuts and stepper couplers, plus shipping.by butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group
I got my stepper drivers (A4988) from user "robokits" on Trademe. They were $19.95 each. Not sure, but he may be a member of this forum.by butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group
I have one, and yes. Great little kit. The site for them is here: Check to see if you're getting the latest version if you're buying from ebay. Only issue I had was soldering a surface mount diode, and it comes pre-installed on the latest boards. The guy who builds them is a really helpful chap - he posts on the buildlog forum (I have an Ord Hadron).by butterfinger - New Zealand RepRap User Group
