I'm in the testing phase of building a new printer based on a RAMPS 1.5 / Arduino 2560 board set. Firmware is based on the Marlin RC-6 I wanted a little larger than normal print area so I decided on a 8 1/2 x 12 1/2 heat bed. So I made a separate PCB that contains a circuit that I though would control the heat bed using an external relay. The heat bed should draw about 18/19 amps when it firstby kd6hq - RAMPS Electronics
First the equipment and firmware I'm using. RAMPS 1.4, Arduino Mega 2650 and Marlin 1.1.0-RC7. Purchased RRD Fan Extender board. With 2 fans connected it works with the following sample program. void setup() { pinMode(11, OUTPUT); pinMode(6, OUTPUT); } void loop() { digitalWrite(11, HIGH); digitalWrite(6, LOW); delay(5000); digitalWrite(11, LOW); digitalWrite(6, HIGHby kd6hq - General
I've started playing around with the firmware a little. I'm finding that I am a little more interested than I thought I would be. I'm specifically interested in the Marlin firmware as opposed to firmware in genera. So I'm looking for something I can read that explains the flow of the firmware. I'm finding different types of files ie. *.h, *.o, *.ccp etc. I would like to know what they all mean.by kd6hq - Firmware - Marlin
Thank you rklauco, that will get me started.by kd6hq - Let's design something! (I've got an idea ...)
Thank you Roxy, that was the first thing I did. As it turns out I had the Z feed rate set too high. All is well now. thanks againby kd6hq - Firmware - Marlin
I am having a bit of a time understanding how this should be setup. First I'm using a RAMPS 1.4 / Arduino Mega 2560 combination. I'm using Marlin 1.1.0-RC6. I have an inductive probe plugged into the Z-min pins of the RAMPS board. The probe is working normally, triggers when next to metal and otherwise open, as shown with the M119 command. I am using 2 Nema 17 motors to drive the Z axis. I hby kd6hq - Firmware - Marlin
Thanks, that is the one I'm using and I have selected board type 34 (EE so it should already be supported according to Geeetech. Right now I have bigger problems such as, as soon as I change the extruder count to 2 I start getting compile errors. Makes me think there is something amiss in the "temperature.cpp" file. I have not been able to figure out how to copy the error so I make it into a *by kd6hq - Firmware - mainstream and related support
A while back I decided that I would like to build my own printer using a RAMPS 1.4 / Arduino 2560 board set. I decided on a bed size of approximately 12 x 8 x 10". So far I have the hardware almost complete with only the end stops left to mount. I have bench tested all the motors and they do run although I have not tried them yet in the printer yet. 1 extruder has been defined with the thermiby kd6hq - Firmware - mainstream and related support
It looks to me that theses settings are used to define the distance the probe is from the hot end and are used during the auto bed leveling function. I found a series of 3 videos, which explain it. Part 3 of the videos explain it. As per the video just above "Bed Auto Leveling" header is the command #define min_software_endstops false // If true, axis won't move to coordinates less than HOME_by kd6hq - Firmware - mainstream and related support
Thanks My thinking at the time was just to use what I had on hand at the time. The relays were left over from an antenna-switching project I did a few years ago. Since the RAMPS board had an 11A specification I used the relay. The relay I used comes in both 10A and 15A versions. So you have to specify when ordering. However at the same time since I'm not heating the bed thru the RAMPS setupby kd6hq - RAMPS Electronics
Well I thought the circuit was done but apparently not. Those are the relays I am using on a test boar right now. I am setting up a printer that is not fully functional yet. I am using a RAMPS 1.4 / Arduino 2560 board set. The power source for this circuit is 12VDC @ 5A and fused as such. The circuit using RL-1 (top left corner) is not suppose to have more than 5 amps applied to it. This ciby kd6hq - RAMPS Electronics
This is not a kit it is all home built. I'm in the process of checking that everything is basically working before installing in the printer. I'm using a RAMPS 1.4 board with an Arduino 2560. To check things out I have been using Repetier V1.0.6. I have 2 mechanical end stops with an Inductive Probe (PNP type) hooked up. Since it is a PNP type I found that I had to set "const bool Z_MIN_ENDSTby kd6hq - Firmware - mainstream and related support
Quoterepetier What I do not understand is "Z probe out bed" because the firmware does not have this error message. Is this really what you get or did you change the message? Or did you get this with Marlin? Homing does not do any z probing stuff, so you should never get a z probe message while homing. G30 could do but that is not z homing. I also think you ruled firmwares as M211 is not implemeby kd6hq - Repetier
I have done a search for this message and have only found 1 reference and it was not helpful. I'm in the process of setting up a RAMPS 1.4 and Arduino 2560 board for a home built printer. I am having difficulty setting up the Z-axis motor. Currently everything is just setting in a test area and not actually in a printer. The software that I use to print with is Repetier 1.0.6. I've recently layed out my first PCB. Having never done this before I have a question about diodes. I've added a diode to each relay. My thoughts in adding D1-D3 were to dissipate the voltage in the collapsing field when the relay is deactivated. Are the diodes wired correctly to do this? thanksby kd6hq - RAMPS Electronics
QuoteAndrewBCN There isn't any easy, simple way to do that. However, note that the Arduino Mega 2560 power consumption is usually around 250mW (1/4W) when powered from USB. The TV in your living room standby power consumption is probably around 5W, so that gives you an idea of how little power the Arduino uses. Thanks but power consumption is not the issue, it just bugs me that something is tuby kd6hq - RAMPS Electronics
I'm in the process of building a printer using the RAMPS 1.4 and Arduino 2560 boards. Sometimes I will use the printer from SD ram and others from the computer. I would like to leave the printer connected to the computer at all times. Is it possible to turn the Arduino 2560 board off (besides disconnecting the USB cable) so that is does not power up every time I turn on the computer? Currentlby kd6hq - RAMPS Electronics
I'm considering adding a heated bed to my printer so that I can start using ABS. But first some questions. Approximately how many layers is the heated bed useful for? Lets say you are doing a print that has 200 layers. Does the heated bed affect all 200 layers or is just the first few? I suspect that it is just the first few - if so is there a way to turn off the heated bed after the first saby kd6hq - RAMPS Electronics
That's what it dose, is just kill the print. As you found out you need to do a hard restart to free it up. Sometimes the ramps reset switch is not easy to get to so the "kill" button is one way to stop a print right now. Instead of the few cycles the software takes.by kd6hq - RAMPS Electronics
The original idea was for a fan, but I don't see any reason you could not use it for a couple of leds. Just check your current ratings first. Have fun, good luckby kd6hq - RAMPS Electronics
Thanks for the tip. This is my first attempt so your commits are appreciated.by kd6hq - General
Ok, that will work. I can just send 2 commands, one for each pin. As far as the pin definitions "pinMode (6, OUTPUT)", where would be the best place to define them. I was thinking right after the board definition in the configuration.h file or perhaps in the pins_RAMPS_13.h file? Anything else you can think of I should check? Thanks for all the help.by kd6hq - RAMPS Electronics
Thank you for your suggestion. I decided just to purchase one instead, it had the advantage to me of being SMT components, things I don't see well enough to solder anymore. What I'm trying to do is to setup 2 fans for cooling the material on a dual extruder system. If possible I would like the fans to turn on and off just like a single extruder system. This may all be explained somewhere hereby kd6hq - RAMPS Electronics

Thanks I've decided to use the following (from one of the calculators) 3A = .684mm 5A = 1.38mm 11A = 4.10mm 15A = 6.29mm I went the next step up for each. thanks again kd6hqby kd6hq - General
I am considering making my own accessory PCB for the RAMPS 1.4 board. Normally I would just breadboard something like this but this time I'm considering carrying more current than I normally do. Since I've never done this before I was wondering how wide the traces should to carry 12V DC at 5A, 11A and 15A. I don't see a way to set up Extruder, Extruder, Bed, Fan. I have not found any reference to it in the pins.h or pins_RAMPS_13.h files. Only references to EFB, EEB, EFF and EEF. Are pins 8 & 9 the only pins that a PWM signal is on? thanksby kd6hq - RAMPS Electronics
