BTW, standing on the shoulders of giants as I have done in creating the Live CD/DVD I didn't realize when I posted my last comments that there is already a simple fix for graphics card issues. When you boot off the Live CD and you get the initial menu that asks what you want to do (i.e. boot the Live CD or install it etc.) there is also the additional choice of choosing options by pressing one oby reece.arnott - RepRap Host
Do you want the java source code or do you just want to run it? If you just want the source code its on the sourceforge site: The actual compiled host software is also there but there are a couple of other things you need to install as well. If you want to run it without too much trouble you can download and burn the LiveDVD which has everything installed already for you. But if you want to iby reece.arnott - RepRap Host
Sorry I haven't replied to these responses very fast, I've been quite busy at a paying job, next year will be a different story :-) I was thinking something along the lines of adding 3D scanning ability but it may be that Sebastien's idea about object reconstruction from digital photos would be easier. I'll have to look into it. I realize I didn't really give you much to go on as far as my specby reece.arnott - General
I've decided to do a PhD and for that you need to do 'original research'. The only thing I can think of is 'something to do with Reprap'. I've asked a few people who are interested but not involved with the project and they've given me a few directions to go in but nothing that really pushes my buttons, so I'm asking you, the people intimately involved, what is there that is worth spending the neby reece.arnott - General
I did something with my Gen1 electronics that meant that the powercomms board wasn't distributing the power or the comms to the other boards. I tried to troubleshoot it for an hour or so but thats not my forte and I just decided to get a whole new set of Ardunio electronics instead of figuring out what went wrong and undoing it. Before it crapped out altogether it was inconsistently sending poweby reece.arnott - RepRap Host
Just added a talk I gave a couple of weeks ago at the Computer and Information Science seminar series at Otago University (New Zealand) to shop around for a PhD supervisor. The talk covered Reprap's past, present and future and where I want to see it go. I was a bit nervous so there are a few pauses as I'm searching for simple words and phrases :-) See what you think.by reece.arnott - General
Just starting to put together my Gen 2 electronics and I was having problems figuring out which resistor was what so I searched and found a cool little webpage: which allows you to put in the resistor rating and get the colours or vice versa. Note that you need to choose the carbon film option rather than metal film. Maybe this should be linked to from the instructions. Also, for me at least,by reece.arnott - Controllers

Sorry, something went wrong with my seeding and I didn't notice. Fixed now. I'll seed it full time (rather than just 8 hrs a day) for a couple of days for you. BTW, be aware there are a few issues with this DVD listed here: the main one being that the RXTX doesn't want to work properly so the host software doesn't actually talk to the Reprap properly.by reece.arnott - RepRap Host
OK, I'll start using the tag 'RepRapRelated'. First up, the talk at The Last Hope Conference called 'Community Fabrication'. The guy doing the talk was involved with Fab@Home but he opened the floor to comments from someone involved with Reprap. It sounded like some interesting comments but you can't really hear them. I've just been thinking that a number of things posted to the General forum are links to news stories that we think might be of interest to other reprappers. Are there enough of them do you think that we should have a dedicated forum/rss feed for them? And, of course, how hard would that be do? There are few measurements that are not spelt out in the instructions that I had a couple of problems with last week so I thought I'd share what I'd worked out. Firstly the horizontal measurements between the corner pieces are around about 360mm (362mm if you do it exactly). The vertical spacing between the corner pieces is not specified and depends in some respects on how long you want the legby reece.arnott - Mechanics
Or you could download the LiveDVD which has a whole lot more software that others have found useful to use alongside the Reprap host software (http://reprap.org/bin/view/Main/LiveCDPage). Interesting discussion. I haven't much to add other than to say I'm looking at joining Zach in the ranks of the 'unemployed' to concentrate fulltime on Reprap. In my case I'll be starting a PhD next year that I'll be leveraging to be useful to the Reprap project (final topic still to be decided). Initially I'll be cutting back to 15 hours paid work for the first year with the idea I'll cut that aby reece.arnott - General

Sounds like a great idea to me. At some point the nuts, bolts and screws will be the hardest parts to get and aside from anything else, this would eliminate most of them as they're used to connect bits together. For me, that has already happened as I was collecting most of my parts over Christmas and the specialty nuts and bolts store was closed. I've been stuck trying to get the Z belt tension correct. I've read through the troubleshooting tips Ed put up and fixed a couple of minor issues. However, my main issue is the Z belt tension. I've respliced the Z belt a few times to try and get a belt thats almost right and just tighten it up but I'm having a few issues fby reece.arnott - Mechanics
If you install the Live CD/DVD it will ask what you want to do with the current OS and partitions. By default it will take the largest partition and split it in half, install itself there and insert a boot menu so you can choose which OS to use. If you don't want it to take half then you can move the slider. If you want to redo the entire partitioning scheme you can click on an advanced button anby reece.arnott - RepRap Host
Lots of questions, so I'll just try and answer the ones that haven't been so far: The reprappable parts are quite expensive at the moment compared to what they ultimately will be. These parts will cost approx. $20-$30 once you have a reprap but before then we have to get a set made in a commercial 3D printer eg. AlphaPrototypes ($US1385 is the lowest price I've seen). That particular error won't be different between different LiveDVD versions. Its a known issue with some Nvidia cards and the Ubuntu LiveCD I based the ReprapLiveDVDs on. Those are quotes from me so I guess I should follow them up :-) The details vary a little depending on your environment so I'll assume you're running from the LiveDVD. Run the poke utility to check that the boards are actually able to be talked to or run the attached script to get more human readable results. You may have to right click on it and go to the Permissions tab of the Properties and make it executable. I'm giving a talk in a month or so on the Reprap project as part of the joint Computer and Information Science seminars at the University of Otago (New Zealand) and I'm stuck on a slide that begins with the title 'Why?' The only reason that its working as root and not a normal user will probably be that the rights on j3d need to be changed (see ) "The 0.8 version has the rights as -rw-r--r-- but the 0.9 version is -rwxrwx--- As this file is copied into place via a sudo command this means its assigned user and group as root so the normal user has no rights to it, hence the error, Simple fix for that is to ruby reece.arnott - RepRap Host
I've found a few minor issues with the LiveDVD version 0.7 but I don't think its worth redoing another one at the moment but it does imply that this version is a bit more rough and ready than the previous versions. 1) I'm also having issues with the comms error with /dev/ttyUSB0 but I think its the order in which things are turned on as I have had it working. If I find a solution I'll post it to this thread: 2) I think the RXTX error is related to the first error, fix one and the other will go away. 3) The Imagecon error is specifically an error associated with the 0.9 host and/or not running Java versioby reece.arnott - RepRap Host
