Another thing is while testing, ALWAYS make certain that you are completely powered down, all LEDs out etc, before shifting any wires. A great many burnouts occur due to disconnecting or connecting a hot circuit.by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
The last one I saw (open source) it was all in the manner in which you open the files. I will try and find the vid if I can. The Makerbot software has a more user friendly appproach, but it is for the Makerbot and it is for two colors as the makerbot only has two colors... This just in! What you evidently want is the new slic3r RC3. This has support for multiple extruders. I found it just noby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
The slicer actually takes care of this. Actually, I have really old autocad myself, same as what you used... The full blown Autocad is 3d, Autocad lte is 2d, they have an affordable cloud product now. Anyway, you have the word layer used differently in different places. Obviously, layers on your printer are flat things that stack like pancakes. In Autocad, in a 3d environment, layers do not haveby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
As I understand the process (as if I totally did ), the colors go down as they come up in the print, so for example, if you were printing a checkerboard, you would continually alternate the colors as you move from square to square, using your offset parameter to hop the carriage between colors. This is not without its challenges, of course, as getting right or not makes all the difference in theby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
CNCD, you had asked how I was going to address more than 2 extruders in repetier... The hardware answer involves physically multiplexing the pins related to the extruders, and the firmware answer resides in pins.h. You need to declare your additional pins here, then add the extruders in configuration.h. Then you need only your models. I am most familiar with Autocad, versus other modelers. OK, now this issue has got me to go digging around in the firmware, and a number of issues and answers are coming to light. I'll talk about extruders in the build thread, but as for this item, my conclusion is that I will run the heatbed on a standalone pid controller, looped with a thermocouple, and then add a thermistor to talk back to ramps. The output to the heater will be set low and will oby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
Think I found it... Set %ob to 0 in firmware??? (heated bed temp output) That way I could let it think it is heating the bed, when it's being heated externally?by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
I am using a very large silicone bed heater with a standalone PID controller. Would I just set the value in the bed temperature to "0" in the printer config? The controller lets me set the temp from the front of the machine... I am still looking at various units at various prices. The costlier ones seem to communicate, the more basic ones do not. My heater is coming with a thermocouple. Optionallby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
This week I am waiting to get my 25mm rod from Misumi, so that I can beef up my long axis. I have a tracking number, so it should not be long. Also, I should have a price on my heater on Monday. I found a place more willing to do single pieces, and does not charge a setup fee. I'll keep you posted on how this turns out. I had noticed that one of our reputable vendors has heat pads that would diviby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
This is the time to step back, take a breath and recheck everything (wiring) for correctness and is properly inserted, tightened. Are you getting smoke from the nozzle or somewhere else? If it is the nozzle what is your temp, what type of filament. If elsewhere, wiring is a suspect. All circuits contain a limited amount of smoke. When they run out of smoke, they tend to stop working. I just tried the config tool and it would seem to allow you to add as many as you want. I think you might need to do a bit of tweaking elsewhere to make it all work.by Maxx Mayhem - General

Sublime, Thank you for the pololu tutorial... I found it MOST applicable..... I think the issue with threaded rods is that the cross section of the outermost surfaces is staggered relative to the absolute center. So by installing it on to the nut, you have (at the nut) a concentric assembly, but the exposed threaded portion in cross section at any given height (rod vertical) is slightly eccentrby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
Sorry about the lack of clarity but that's due for the most part that I'm still , ehem, "finalizing the design"by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
CNCD,I think that you are picturing a stretched belt, I had a different design in mind... Thank you A2, I kind of like the belt on belt concept , but for the time being the design I have for the rack portion goes as follows; I'll have a 25mm linear rod, turned down at the ends to work with my existing adjustment system, slotted along its length to accommodate a section of GT2 belt, which will beby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
Thank you A2, the X axis on my machine is around 28" of travel. My concern with a 5 foot belt is that the weight of it and dynamic forces would tend to create a serious reliability issue with respect to accuracy. I can visualize where you would think that backlash would come in, however I've plans in the works to neutralize that problem... My initial idea was to have a separate rack, but after giby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
I believe that the slicing software does in fact have support for any number of extruders. The issue is firmware support - to wit I am getting ready to build a RAMPS expander board and write a firmware patch that will make it all work. Edit-Just checked (and updated) Repetier. Under printer configuration, there is a space for extruders, that seems to allow you to add as many as possible.by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
OK so after a good couple of months or so, the cold end assembly is finally DONE!!!!!!!!!!!! Next step is the top of the cabinet which will hold this as well as the filament rack. The carriage is also on deck... There is a busload of electronics to do yet, but I have most of the bits and pieces here. More on this story as it develops.by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
Taking a quick break from soldering... Heres a shot of the extruder assembly from underneath with the bottom cover off. This thing is precisely the diameter of a box of CDs. That helps! I'll show you the completed assembly in a few hours.by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
Their stuff looks pretty cool. I especially like the quality of that print. Gives me something to shoot for.by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
If it is the same chip, there could be an issue. The fellow who runs MassMind and I spoke last year when I was building the driver, and he told me that the particular Toshiba chip was a one off, and that he was in the process of developing a new product based on another chip. I had planned to get back to him as soon as I got things running, clearly the time frame has expanded slightly....We willby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
I have finished making the hub for the extruders today, all that remains for them is powder coating and assembly, then I can hang the extruders. These were made from mild steel, one of the few items other than the frame not made from aluminum. Once the extruder assembly is done, I will be working on the electronics, along with the housing for same, as I wait for the new linear rods to get here.by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers

That's cool, the main issue with me is that between the deep freeze and the urgency of finishing this machine, funds are limited, and when I say limited, I mean in the same respect as having dates with swimsuit models limited. I agree with you about holding power, this would be an even bigger issue if I had a heavier mill. The thing I like about the vise I have is the ability to do angles. Yes itby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
I just finished the hangers for the extruders, and am going to try and get the hub parts drilled and finished today. These pix were taken before I polished and finished them yesterday...I've been snowed in, so I have actually made good progress this week. The whole assembly should be done later in the week, as soon as I can get the bolts... I'm also getting ready to start testing to see if I willby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
Yes, a Kurt would be nice. So would a bridgeport. I do not however have a high enough ceiling in my shop for a bridgeport, shame, because I have seen some sold rather cheaply lately. The thing with the drill mill is that you can only remove so much material in a pass in the first place, so the vise I have is appropriate. My budget for metalworking equipment is not unlimited, either in funds or spaby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
Closer... I am working on the extruder assy today. Life has been in head to head competition with progress. After struggling with my harbor freight angle vise, to make the blanks for the extruder angle blocks, and fiddling with shims and spacers to level everything up, I finally machined the surface to match it to the bed and cutter ( it was .010 out!) and snug the traveler. There was material prby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
A funny thing happened to me the other day. Well, not so much funny as , well. So I'm making a pair of 8 sided hubs to hold my extruders, they are steel and rather chunky, and take about 8 hours each to make. So I am about 20 seconds from completing the final clean up pass on the second one when the chuck goes loose, the bit grabs the work and... trash bag gets about a pound and a half heavier. I'm waiting for a tap and a die to finish the last couple of steps on the cold ends, and I'm working on the assembly hubs for them. I noticed yesterday that yet another (well known) company has taken to Kickstarter to elicit funds for a multi color printer which is "just around the corner". Where are they getting their ideas? Maybe it is simply a logical progression and if I am part of it, that'sby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
To the issue of weight, I expect to end up at around 300LB, for 3.25 CUFT. And that is for a minimal sized machine. I'm with you S-Ram, many of us , myself included come here to learn about these machines. And I can say, for someone starting out in this pursuit, the less money they have to spend on it, the more critical it is they do things the right way to be successful.
