The electronics are now partially in (LCD soon) though wiring is being held till later. The PSUs (of which a 3rd will be added if I end up using a low voltage bed heater) will get covers shortly. You see the Ramps assy and the driver for the z axis just behind it. Also shown is a shot of the bottom from yesterday. More soon!by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
Get some sticky felt like what one would use to put under a vase on a wood table top, and fashion a piece that applies light pressure to the edge of your spool, just enough to keep it from turning out of control.by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
Aw, come on - that kid would be a breeze in 3ds Max! Seriously though, I too vote for hoax. Even if it is real, a fade is a cop out. And then a bunch of different colored separate parts. Make a mendelmax 2.0 styled machine, substitute wheels on the bottom for the build plate. The base /wheels would need to be rather heavy, and you want a very even floor to work on, as well as some sort of laser positioning system.by Maxx Mayhem - Developers
I like the idea of 10 steppers but would really want thermistor inputs and heating outputs for all the last 7 so that they could be plug and play for extruders.by Maxx Mayhem - Developers
Well, actually, the way commercial (powder) printers work, is they use an ink cartridge to dye the fusing liquid just before it is applied to a given location. Check out the Iris printer, it has really impressive coloring. The z machines unit is nice too, but both are still a bit steep for most of us. I have heard (unsubstantiated) somebody claiming to be able to dither filament. I'll believe thaby Maxx Mayhem - Developers
I believe this will have an effect on reprappers and it is this. If you have done your homework, and have become successful in obtaining consistent, reliable output, and you understand the math, the electronics and the mechanics of these machines fluently, you, in a couple of years, will have a high paying job opportunity, anywhere you are or want to be. Well, I've finally begun installing the first parts in my printer. The end enclosure panels, which are clear polycarbonate are in, as are the Z motors and their fans. I have also begun fabricating the frames for the electronics chassis, the center one of which is visible on the floor under its spot. Once the basic electronics and PSUs are installed, it's on to the stationary rods and their adjustby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
If you have ever peeked inside the hod of a Mini Cooper, there is no space what soever. In theory, that car should self immolate like a Porsche 914 but they don't. In fact, I believe they don't even get all that warm. Yet, they must heat up to work. Once you introduce an enclosure, you must begin to think about the micro environments within your printer. By the time I get done, I'm pretty sure Iby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
Control of heat is everything. All of your above points are not only valid, but the basis of my work. I once took at face value when someone told me "it couldn't be done". This was the source for a great deal of disappointment in life. So now I prefer to address the impossible simply as a series of questions which need new answers. Make no mistake about this - I have no misconceptions of the leveby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
No slowness planned here. And I would be inclined to agree about the difficulties of a bowden setup, but I'm going for 7 colors/materials. There are serious questions to answer for sure. Those are some great looking prints! The Yoda looks like ceramic after the post treatment, but the opener really shows off the precision of your printer, which is one fine looking machine BTW.by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
Yesterday saw the final prep and paint of the frame. After the paint has had a couple of days to set up and gas out, Its next stop is my office where I can begin to fit it out.by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
The larger you go, the sturdier frame you need, and it can make a huge difference in your requirements, depending on the need for accuracy. Cast iron may be a bit much, due to the fact that, for one thing, it has to be cast. I am doing a large printer, it gets complicated as the size goes up, and I am doing a heavy steel frame. Just a bit of final grinding and prep before finishing. This component is by far the most complicated part of the project, as it encompasses all of the design and engineering up front. You can see all adjuster and motor holes, all of the screw holes for electrical chassis mounting, the upper frame (TB and more are drilled and tapped, all machining processes are done at this point because all hadby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
Now we're gettin' someplace... I got about half the frame final assembly welded up today, I hit all the corners so it is set, plumb, level and square. Don't ask how long that took, suffice it to say the rest of the welding should go pretty quick. After initially migging the tack welds, I decided tig was the way to go, and with my new, adjustable helmet, it proved to be quite a bit easier going thby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
All of the parts for the frame are now ready to be assembled - welding gets done tomorrow. Here are all the parts lined up, the legs, a leg close up and a close up of the mounting points for the nema23 Z motors. The notches in the legs accommodate the Y axis adjusters, legs are tapped for installation of the enclosing panels. This frame is the most labor intensive part of the whole project. Eric, thanks. I have no experience in this either, but I have found that with all of the information both here and in the wiki, there is a good amount of material to start from in creating a new design. For the moment, I am basically documenting my progress right here, and will supplement that with more details as they become available, and as time permits. As to a tutorial, that could prove usefby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
So what ever happened to... After a couple of busy weeks in the shop doing customer work, I'm finally back on the GT-7 and today I began machining the heavy corner members of my frame. It took some doing, but I finally determined the optimum way to clearance for my adjusters, while giving the maximum welding real estate for the most stiffness. I plan to complete machining and weld this up tomorrby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
I'd turn everything off, computer included, and try again. You might want to verify your com port, I've seen them move and return. You should end up in the port you started out with after a reboot though. Turn off all electronics for a full minute or so to clear residual power.by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
Look at your layer height and try to tweak the "warm time". In other words, if you are using a fan for cooling the abs, adjust it to cool the extruded abs just a bit slower. It's a delicate balancing act but I believe it makes all the difference.by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
If you are looking for a kit, it seems that the prusa style has a large installed user base, which means easiest access to answers. Or the mendelmax has a frame that is a bit easier to assemble. You can build from scratch, as I am, if you want to do something specific that the available kits do not, but it will cost at least as much, and take a lot longer.by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers

I hope to return to the frame by wed or sooner. I had a rush job to get out in the shop, and I can't do any welding till it's out the door. Remaining are the corner legs, which I have elected to make from 3/8" thick 3x3 angle, because I was becoming afraid I might be able to lift this thing by myself! Seriously though, they will provide not only the stiffness I want, but also simplify enclosingby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
The question is do you want a tricolor version or the tricolor version? The reprap pro use a sanguino to start with another sanguino added. But your question is of particular interest to me as I am working on a 7 color machine. On RAMPS, you have ready spaces for only enough inputs to watch to thermistors for extruders, and one for a heated bed. I think the megatronics board might have the extraby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
I too am building a large format printer, through not quite as large as the design you have presented. If I may offer some advice, it is as follows. The larger your printer is going to be, the more critical is rigidity to it's ability to function in any satisfactory way. The requirements to achieve this rigidity increase exponentially with size, this requirement is reflected in the stiffness of tby Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
While work on the frame continues... I thought I'd put up a pic of the completed 6064 driver from , which I have mentioned a few times on this forum, as an option for those whose printers are using high amperage motors. Since my Z has 2 nema 23s pulling 2 amps each, I elected to go with this driver for that axis, as it is rated at 4 amps continuous, with a peak of around 4.5 amps. Those motors are drawing 5amps between them. (I assume you have 2) Standard pololus or step sticks are really not meant to handle even one of those. My 23s only draw 2 amps each. You need a 6064 and, with 5 amps, I'd contact the seller and verify the suitability. .(I'm NOT the salesman for these, I just keep seeing folks with high amp motors today) If this doesn't pan out, Sparkfun has nema 17 .by Maxx Mayhem - Reprappers
