Guys - The design that I was talking about is used to generate 3mm material. Why change what works. It appears that Zach may have fixed the problem of the extruder on the machine and what is needed is a way to create the 3mm material that that machine can use. The system that I built for my friend has a 10 CU Yard bin on top and when the system is turned on the piston powered by a hydraulic puby bobt - Mechanics
Freds - It appears that the software will always recompile the code before uploading into the sanguino. Even if you just complied it. So the wait for 10 sec is required to reliably reload the chip.by bobt - RepRap Host
The piston method would work if the piston was designed like the bolt action on a rifle. The piston with a long body would not allow any material behind the top. Also using a 2 piston operation with the pistons tied together with a common driving rod will allow either piston to supply pressure while the other is withdrawing for reload. I have designed a single piston system to make wood pelletsby bobt - Mechanics
I was just over at ACE Hardware and happen to find a High Temp Stove and Gasket Cement in a tube. The tube is 2.7 FL oz in size and withstands 2000 degrees F (1095 degrees C). Also the cost is reasonable only 3.79 plus tax. Instructions: open tube. Clean the work area. Dampen the work area and apply cement. Let set for 1 hour then heat slowly. Brian - I got my two sets this morning. Just 3 days because the Post Office had to stay out of Santa Claus's way yesterday. HOT DAM.... Now I can get real busy finishing my 2 rep-straps because it appears that I have all the parts at this time. Bob Teeterby bobt - For Sale
Ant said: "Some metals aren't to bad heat wise. Aluminum for example, should be a possibility" I melt Aluminum in a crucible in a charcoal furnace. I put some of the different plastics into the melted aluminum. Guess what! The all returned to their basic carbon base structure. That of black carbon. This is defiantly not the way to create wires inside of plastic. Aluminum in the molten statby bobt - General
Oh well - I was hoping that this work had been done. I have downloaded the software and now to set it up for the sanguino.by bobt - RepRap Host

Forrest - That is a delight to my eyes. Did they make each part and put it together or fabricate it all at once and save some assembly required?by bobt - General
Forrest - Thanks those are the answers that I was looking for. The main thing that I saw was what was possible to make. Some people do not have the imagination or vision to think of what is possible and why you would want to do this process. Again thank you for the information.by bobt - General
Forrest - But notice that they use ABS and a support material that is removed by an acid bath. Who what when how.. We do ABS. What support material are they using? Also notice that they have at least set a standard with the parts they displayed. Why can't we make those items also. Bob Teeterby bobt - General
I just sent an email for 2 kits. So it may appear that we have a go for parts. Bob Teeterby bobt - For Sale

Forrest - I agree with your statements. So how do we solve the problem? Can most of the parts for the Darwin be built out of wood? If it can then all it takes is a portable drill/electric drill and some sanding paper wrapped around a block of wood to finish the parts. This same methodology should work for most 3rd world countries. Its real nice to build a darwin but I started with a repstrapby bobt - Plastic Extruder Working Group
Forrest - Just a quick note. The Gingery's are Father and Son. Dave Gingery died in 2004 but his son has put out some new books and video's based on his fathers stuff. The thing I like about Dave's stuff is it is a starting point on DIY big time. I have built and used his foundry. But when was the last time you saw a 5 gallon metal bucket sitting around. I had to buy mine to get some. But iby bobt - Plastic Extruder Working Group

Might I suggest that the model most successfully used in open source software be followed. That is the Linux kernel project, because it has worked for 17 years. There are thousands of developers that write code for the kernel. The core group of developers for the kernel evaluate and test the provided code. When the core group believe that they have a consistent structure/subsystem then the grby bobt - General

Forrest - I have used REALBasic for several years. It is ok as a multiplatform basic the only problem that I have is the upgrades you have to pay for every 6 months to stay up to date. Bobby bobt - RepRap Host
There is no need to heat the springs. I got the same 4" springs in my order and yes they are to long for what I built. All I did is figure out how long they needed to be and cut them off with an 8" wire cutter. Then I took 2 needle nose pliers and bent out the end I needed to attach to the connection point. No problem with this at all. Bobby bobt - Reprappers
Yes you can use a 1/4 inch pipe strap from the plumbing department at your local hardware store. My local ACE hardware only had copper so I used that. I found the the coupling nut was a little loose so I wrapped some electrical tape around it and it works fine.by bobt - Reprappers

The threads of the screw are designed to bite into the material that it is being screwed into. If the hole that you are trying to put the screw into is too small then the screw will seize up and snap off. Then you get the fun of removing the screw parts left and starting over. It's best to test so that you have the right size hole for the screw you are using in the material that you are tryingby bobt - Reprappers
One hint from experience is if you twist off the head of the screw then the hole is too small. Start from the larger hole size and work down so that when you twist off the head you know that the last one was the right size. I had to remove 4 different screw because they twisted off on me. Figured out the right size right after that.by bobt - Reprappers
