Hi Quentin, If you provide more details it will help us to help you. What slic3r settings are you using (especially layer hight, speed, bed temp)? I suggest the following: 1. Calibrate your extruder feed rate. A good intro/instruction is here: 2. Make sure your filament diameter setting in Slic3r is correct. Good project. Best of luck. The Electronics will be the most expensive part. The Printrboard from the Printrbot might be a good low cost choice. Alternatively, you could home fab a Gen7, but it might not work out cheaper. After that, the motors, linear bearings, and hot end are all expensive. It's probably worth paying for linear bearings, but if you can't afford them (try ebay), then try feltby leo.dearden - Reprappers
It looks like your extruder filament drive is direct mounted. If that's correct then the "not more than 2mm" rule is probably good. (If it's on a Bowden cable then the springiness of the long tube and the filament in the tube means that you can probably retract 3-4mm before you get air sucked back up. @gtg252b I've found a few solutions to the (few) problems I've had with ABS not sticking to heated Kapton: Make sure your Z-stop calibration is correct. Parts that are squashed harder to the bed stick better. Raise the bed temperature. It's not too hot unless your print is not solidifying. Raise the extruder temperature. @iLikeWaffles You asked about the double Z header on the RAMPS 1.4. The header is wired with the two motors in parallel. I've concluded that you get better performance by wiring your Z motors in series. You're better off doing the series wiring yourself and using one header. Just FYI, I've just taken delivery of 150kg of ABS from China. See this thread. The process went OK. It would have taken a couple of months to set up if I'd been in a hurry and the tolerances aren't that tight, but I think the filament is perfectl usable. IMHO the most interesting circuits to fabricate require multilayer boards. These are seriously challenging to fabricate in a garage. Fair enough, up to a point, but some sorts of deal don't fit well on ebay. Take the bulk ABS order that I'm about to make. I don't want to speculate: buy a load and then hope to sell it (for profit or otherwise). I'm looking to RepRap a number of large objects, so I'll soon be ordering at least 100kg of ABS welding rod. The best quote I have so far is EUR ~4/kg + EUR ~7/kg surface shipping to me in Zurich + insurance + duties (~10%?). I've been to a seminar about casting, which included a section about using Alginate to make molds from people. It can be made to set pretty fast (some seconds) in air by mixing it strong with warm water. What they told us was that it is short life (hours) and dimensionally unstable, because it's a water gel: A solid matrix filled with water.
