Keith: It's been something I've been wanting to do on the wiki, plus have pages for each plastic that has more information on the individual plastic than a comparison page can really have. I've just moved house however, so I haven't had the time I'd like to dedicate to the task. Note: If someone else wants to start this while I get settled in my new house, feel free! That's what a wiki is for!by Cefiar - General
FWIW: PLA's glass transition temp is between 50-80 Deg C, so I'd guess it would be fine. I don't have a reprap yet however, so I'm basing all my judgement on figures.by Cefiar - For Sale
Sent you an email but forgot to ask: What temp is the polyurethane resin rated to (as there are different types that are rated to different temperatures)? Also: Do you intend to make other parts?by Cefiar - For Sale

If I'm not mistaken, they're part of the Quadrature Input connector for the (optional) Magnetic Rotary Encoder board. What have you got connected to the 2 pin "Temp" connector? Also, I'm pretty sure that the 10k pot near there is an adjustment for the Temp sensor. If it's wound all the way to one end, I'm pretty sure you'll get constant readings of 0. Try adjusting that and see how you go. Notby Cefiar - Controllers

Note: The Nema17 spec doesn't specify the shaft diameter. Given you're ordering some bits from McMaster (which puts you in the USA), I'd guess that the Sparkfun motors had a metric 5mm shaft, whereas the Kysan motors have an imperial 3/16" shaft. 3/16" = 4.7625mm If you've got a pair of callipers about, you could measure this and know for sure.by Cefiar - General Mendel Topics
Have you got the end-stops connected? AFAIK, without the end-stops connected, the electronics think they are triggered, and so the motors won't go in the other direction (ie: it thinks the axis is pushed up against the end-stop, and should not travel any further).by Cefiar - General
Looking through it, I think you can use M4-16 Cap instead. If you take all the M4-12 Cap screws and M4-16 Cap screws and add them up it's suspiciously around the right number of M4-16's in the spreadsheet. Note: I noticed the extruder mentions a single M4-16 Cap screw and in the spreadsheet it mentions it's M4-20 Cap screw. Guess: To reduce the different types of part (and therefore reduce theby Cefiar - General Mendel Topics
FWIW: I think we need to either merge these pages, or make them properly distinct. If they stay separate, we definitely need to get all the units sorted out. I'll have a go at it when I can.by Cefiar - Stepper Motors, Servo Motors, DC Motors
Ryan: Did you cover the bearing assembly before working on the stepper motor? The bearing assembly is where the shaft enters the motor. If you get anything in there (such as ground metal) you may end up with motor problems. If you buy new motors, and want to avoid this happening when you work on the shafts, cover the bearing assembly and shaft with blu-tac. Don't press it in hard though, else yoby Cefiar - General
Looks good nophead. A suggestion for eBay sellers though: Please, if possible, consider finishing your auction at a reasonable time (eg: middle of a weekend, rather than the end). This auction of nopheads finishes at 10:35am on the 19th (Monday) in Australia. A lot of workplaces don't allow you to use eBay at work (mine is one), so this effectively excludes us from watching/bidding at the end oby Cefiar - Plastic RepRap Parts for Sale
Good info there Grogyan. Definitely keep up with it! Notes: The bit you added to the end of the second video probably should have been at the start of the first video, the audio is a little quiet, and you need more light (it's hard to see the X-axis parts specifically). Q: Are you planning to mount the Y-axis part upside down with the Z hanging off it? As a bonus, the light bar points downwardby Cefiar - General
BTW: If the engine uses the mysql text search feature, then this may need to be changed in the mysql config. From the comments at the mysql Fulltext Search page: QuoteChange the ft_min_word_len setting. As one of my steppers has a hole down the centre of the shaft, I've been toying with the idea of putting a thread in it, and then putting brass inserts on the end of a screw which is them put in the threaded shaft. The inserts in question are the little knurled nut pieces that you find in most plastic items that are held together by machined screws (knurled so that the plastic moulded around themby Cefiar - General
Same update, or someone doing the same sort of stuff multiple times? I know I will do some changes, and then go back and edit it as I noticed a mistake. I also will save stuff where I'm editing a lot. eg: I'll complete editing a paragraph or two, which in and of itself I can treat as a single unit. Then I'll open the page again and edit the next unit. I tend to do this as I've found it very eaby Cefiar - Administration, Announcements, Policy
Are you running the steppers all off the same +12V supply? It could be that you're drawing too much current for your power supply at +12V, and you have more current available on the +5V rail. That said, if you draw too much current, the PSU should really shut down, but not all PSU's have decent over-current protection. Note: A lot of PC power supplies have multiple +12V and +5V rails (2 or 3 usby Cefiar - Controllers
Something that is not mentioned on your page, on the wiki or here is if this is metric or imperial? This of course changes the price of the hardware in various places, and I know that some people, especially outside the US, will not buy imperial even if it is available to them.by Cefiar - For Sale
Of note: Someone has successfully built a Mendel with those same Stepper Motors, so it definitely points to the electronics.by Cefiar - Controllers
If anyone who has problems with the direct drive extruder is using "off the shelf" Steppers (eg: that are listed on Stepper Motors wiki page - even if you scavenged them), then please update the wiki or let me know which Stepper you're using so that we can document this. If we can figure out approximately how much torque the direct driver extruder requires in the process, all the better.by Cefiar - General
Noticed this on nophead's blog... experimenting with CU and PLA And since I don't have a blog yet (so I can't seem to post)... In the case of plastic on metal, I think the plastic must be sticking to the fine features of the metal, based on something in some way related to the Coefficients of Linear Expansion for each material. (PS: Useful table, but I can't see PLA on it). My guess (and I'mby Cefiar - General
From the specs page, they have a Holding Torque of around 6 N-cm (612 g-cm or 8.5 oz-in). From the Stepper Motors page on the wiki, motors for Mendel need a Holding Torque of around 13.7 N-cm (1400 g-cm or 19.4 oz-in) to be safe (based on the motors used in the Mendel prototype). Also, they only do 3.6 Degree steps, not 1.8 like most steppers used for RepRaps, which means they'd need gearing doby Cefiar - For Sale
Has anyone used the motors from AusXMod yet in a working Mendel? I've bought some, but as I have no working Mendel, I'd like to update the wiki page to reflect if they've been used successfully.by Cefiar - Australia, Brisbane RepRap User Group
Note that the Suppliers/Stepper Motors and Printing Material Suppliers pages on the wiki are always waiting to be updated with decent supplier details, no matter which country. I've added AusXMods to the stepper page already, and filled in the details I could find. Noticed that AusXMod has some belts in now, with various teeth sizes. No idea if they'd be of any use or not. Seems that materials like ABS stick to kapton fairly well, and when they are removed from the surface (even after cooling) they take a tiny bit of the surface with them. As such, I personally wouldn't use a belt and then print directly on the belt itself. Having kapton tape applied to the surface of the belt however (which can be re-applied when it gets to be a problem) solves the issue nicely. Iby Cefiar - General Mendel Topics
Can't see this motor mentioned on the Stepper Motors page on the wiki. Any chance of adding some details, including where you got it from?by Cefiar - Stepper Motors, Servo Motors, DC Motors
Only thing that bothers me about the conveyor idea is the Kapton ageing issue pointed out in the Heated bed thread over in the General forum. Basically, it seems as though Kapton ages, or at least it is slightly damaged each use as the part is removed. In a belt scenario, this means that the belt will get weaker and weaker over time. This could just lead to stretching (which will expand the distby Cefiar - General Mendel Topics
Ta Sebastien. Good work! FWIW: I think we need to put up some basic facts about each plastic on each wiki page. Deciding what facts to put up (ie: deciding which facts are useful to know, from not only a RepRapping perspective, but from a deployed object use perspective) is probably the hardest part, as the rest is just data entry and fact finding. eg: Common acronym, melting point, glass transby Cefiar - General
