Nylon 618 is very strong and many people have had success with nylon threaded parts. It's possible to make it flexible if you print very thin layers, but print it thick enough and it's rock solid. It might be worth 3d printing in Nylon - it'll be much stronger. ABS might be ok.

In order to get backers you will have to give them something in return. e.g. ask some artists to donate $50 each and in return when it works you'll do them some free prints. This will cost you in printing time, but filament in generally cheap. Same model could be done for product designers...
