Le BigRep(Ikarus)

An approach of building a large scale 1m³ printing RepStrap kind of fabricator.

The goal is to built a large scale fabber which will actually print BIG things..

- the buildarea is 1m³ (big enough for printing a chair, a table, prosthetics, parts for humanoid robots, everything you need)

..but still - scalable in size, lightweight and with plenty room for customization/optimization.

The design incorporates aluminum-beams which are cheap and obtainable in hardware stores (and recyclable) and has only a few parts which you need to produce/fab yourself. This allows you to easily alter the length of the aluminum-beams and build a bigger or smaller machine while using the same mechanical parts. The parts you have to produce are all 2D, so you can cut them with a lasercutter, cnc, waterjet or manually.

The mechanism uses 4 12mm threaded rods (standard from the hardware-store), driven by timing-pulleys and a drive-belt, to move the xy mechanism up and down, which in my opinion will alow fast xy movements.

It is still a concept so one could optimize it for printing the parts with a RepRap. Also there are no tools or toolholder designs included, but there is a baseplate where you can fix the tools you want to use. What is also missing is end-stops and wiring, i plan to put that stuff manually with the first build and put it in the design afterwards.

It is fitted for 3 nema23 with 190Ncm, 76cm length, which should work with the RepRap gen3 electronics.

Le BigRep stands for Leipzig BigRep ..but actually it sounds like "Le BigMac" and reminds me of Pulp Fiction where they talk about quaterpounders with cheese.

The wishlist includes:

  • Milling ( at least foam milling should be possible )
  • Multiple Toolheads
  • Supportmaterial (Cheap and recyclable)
  • 3D-scanning
